When we rewind history back to Abraham’s era, we encounter people who concocted false superstitions to explain the unexplainable. The man we know today as Abraham not only claimed that one true Creator existed but also staked his entire life on this belief. Why, thousands of years later, are we still discussing the faith of this desert nomad? One of America’s most popular Bible teachers, Pastor Chuck Swindoll, answers that question and many more in this compelling and insightful biography that will inspire your own faith.

I admire people who are authentic and transparent, and i enjoy biographies that paint historical figures as they really were.Put those two qualities together in a single binding, and I won't be able to put it down. Don't give me the whitewashed version of a person's life. I want the subject painted as he or she was, "pimples, warts, and everything."That's the way the Bible portrays all of its characters--especially the extraordinary life of Abraham. Scripture doesn't presume to tell fairy tales. It's a book about real life, showing real people going through real experiences in a real world. It tells us the unvarnished truth about its heroes, even when that truth proves to be uncomfortable or unappealing. When you see lives portrayed in such authenticity, you get the whole story--no phony-baloney mannequins, no airbrushed models. That's what I attempted to capture in this biography of Abraham. You'll meet a man who got up after he stumbled. You'll watch a man who put one foot in front of another, even when he couldn't see what God was doing or where He was leading. You'll experience the struggles of a real-life man who dared to place the destiny of his entire life in his Creator's hands.I think you'll be profoundly inspired by the courageous trust of this ancient nomad.I was.--"Chuck Swindoll"""""

A Life of Faith...That Includes Mistakes
By Daniel Greegor
He is the "father of a great nation", the man through whom "all the nations of the earth will be blessed." He is father of Isaac, the grandfather of Jacob, and through his line comes David, Solomon, Daniel, John the Baptist, and Jesus Christ.

Yet, there is much that can be overlooked about Abraham by just casually reading his story in Genesis. Charles Swindoll was written a wonderful book giving insight into who Abraham might have been and why he may have done what he did.

By using historical information about the time in which Abraham lived, such as customs and beliefs, Swindoll has allowed the reader a better view of Abraham.

I found this very helpful as I often was perplexed by some of the decisions Abraham made. Seeing now that is was the custom of the time really enlightened my understanding of certain passages in Scripture.

I also enjoyed how Swindoll showed Abraham as he was: a man. He was a man that made mistakes, had doubts, and suffered because of his errors. Yet, God still used him in a marvelous way. Such encouragement is readily accpeted that if Abraham can be used by God with his faults, so can I.

I learned a lot!
By J4Life5
This is the most in depth book I've ever read about the life of Abraham. We can read through his story in the Bible and understand the change of his name from Abram to Abraham. We can think about how strange it might be to hear that your descendants will be as numerous as the stars in the sky when your wife is well past child-bearing years and you have no children. We can even draw on our own experiences of stepping out in faith and imagine how Abram might have felt in following God's will. However, what Swindoll does so well in this book is to bring all of those events alive for readers.

When reading this book, readers get a clearer picture of the culture that Abram lived in and why his packing up and leaving his land was such a leap of faith. I loved the way that Swindoll described what that experience might look like for us. I really enjoy books that make the people and stories in the Bible more alive for me and this book definitely does that. I also really enjoyed the chapter on prayer and Swindoll's discussion about unconfessed sin and how it might impact your prayer life.

The only crticism I would have about the book is the cover. I read this book as part of the Tyndale Summer Reading program and saw only the thumbnail image of the cover on the reading list and on Net Galley. I did not see the subtitle and did not get a clear look at the picture on the cover. I make it a habit of not reading descriptions of books because I find that the descriptions sometimes give away too much of the book. With all that said, I started reading this book under the mistaken assumption that it was about Abraham Lincoln! For some reason, the thumbnail of the cover looked like Lincoln to me and I was all geared up to learn about the faith of Abraham Lincoln. So I started reading and Swindoll was talking about Abraham and I kept waiting for him to draw comparisons to Lincoln! My mistake is not a reflection of the quality of the book, I just had to share my funny story. I might have to decide to read descriptions, at least on non-fiction books.

This is a great book that is very well-written. If you are interested in learning more about the life of Abraham to draw closer to the Lord, this is the book for you.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

A Deep Look Into The Biblical Account of Abraham
By Jill H.
"Abraham" is a book about the nomad Abraham’s life from the Bible. From his journey to another place he wasn’t familiar with, his relationship with his wife Sarah, his sons, and most importantly his relationship with G-d, the surface of the Biblical account of Abraham is cracked and a deep surface is revealed. It is shown through this book that Abraham was tested a lot to see if his faith in G-d was operating, and just how strong it was. Abraham came from a different and often immoral lifestyle that was so different than the way the new foreigners around him were living. It uncovers how G-d spent time working in his heart to be more faithful.

"Abraham" went deep into the story of Abraham for me, and showed me that G-d will work with us until we get his will for our lives right, as long as we are willing to try again, or keep moving. Many times I thought that G-d was highlighting things he wanted me to see as important, and telling me to reread some of them by the author prompting that.

One thing I thought could be discouraging to some people in the book (and the only thing that I had a hard time with in the book) is when it was explained that people who don’t have wonderful families are not going to end up as good marriage partners in their lives. The author explained he has seen wonderfully healthy people come from terrible families, but they are rare (page 231). I do not believe that to always be true, especially if people are really grounded in Jesus (Yeshua) and working very hard to live a G-dly lifestyle.

This book was an encouragement for me to stay faithful to G-d when tests are being put in my life, and to try again when I fail a faith test. If G-d can call Abraham from the kind of lifestyle that he was a part of and lead him to him, he can turn many more lives around to find his will for their lives as well.

My review = 4.5 out of 5 stars
