A Great Little Book

Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Heaven is a great little book by Randy Alcorn. It is an edited version of his much larger and more in-depth book, Heaven. Though small, it is packed with information and Scripture verses! If you want to learn about Heaven, this book will be a good resource to help you study what the Bible says about Heaven.

Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Heaven is broken into five parts:
- Part I: The Present Heaven
- Part II: The Eternal Heaven
- Part III: Life on the New Earth
- Part IV: Can You Know You’re Going to Heaven?
- Part V: God’s Promises about Heaven

In Parts I and II, Alcorn uses Scripture to answer questions such as:
- What is the “present Heaven”?
- Do people in the present Heaven see what is happening on Earth?
- Where do we get our misconceptions about Heaven?
- If “no eye has seen” Heaven, how can we know about it?
- Is Heaven our default destination…or is Hell?
- Will the old Earth be destroyed…or renewed?
- How will we worship God in Heaven?

In Part III of the book, Alcorn shares what we can know from Scripture about various parts of life on the New Earth. He writes about topics such as angels, animals, clothing, pets, sleep, work, and much, much more!

One thing that has helped me to be content in living with a disabling chronic illness is learning about Heaven and the joy that awaits believers there. This has made it so much easier to let go of my dreams for this life as I look forward to the life to come. If you have never taken the time to learn about Heaven, I think you will find that studying what the Bible says about Heaven will be very much worth your while!

A Glimpse of Heaven

** “That’s why God has given us glimpses of Heaven in the Bible — to fire our imaginations and kindle a desire for Heaven in our hearts. If God didn’t want us to imagine what Heaven will be like, he wouldn’t have told us as much about it as he has.” **

Randy Alcorn condenses information from his book “Heaven” into the lovely “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Heaven.” As he writes in the author’s note, “The material in this little book is just a slice of all you can discover from Scripture about what Heaven is like and what it will be like for God’s people some day.”

In short snippets, Alcorn sets out to debunk misconceptions about Heaven (which come from Satan himself), instead offering biblical truths to the “magnificent world” God’s believers will one day inhabit. But he also reminds us that Heaven isn’t just that stereotypical image of a place up in the clouds — that to see Heaven we just need to look at the world around us and imagine it before its sin-filled state.

Alcorn starts with “The Present Heaven: what the Bible says about where we go first when we die” (in other words, the intermediate Heaven), moves on to “The Eternal Heaven: what the Bible says about where we will live forever” and the “Life on the New Earth: a topical guide to our many questions about the eternal Heaven.” He also includes sections about how to know you’re going to Heaven (as Heaven is not our “default destination”) and the promises God has given us about Heaven.

He takes on some interesting topics in the topical guide like alien life, animals in Heaven — and might they talk?, books and entertainment, will current landmarks on Earth be present in the New Earth, pets, relationships, technology, and space and time travel.

Through “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Heaven,” Alcorn breaks down the many aspects of Heaven and the afterlife simply and thoroughly, always backed by Scripture. His words are thought provoking and perfect for both the believer and those who may still be searching for answers about God and Heaven.

In addition, “Everything” is a beautiful book just to hold and look at. Featuring a lovely, soft leather-like cover embellished with a pretty design on the front and verse on the back, its small size makes it perfect to slip into your purse or large pocket. It also features an attached ribbon to use as a bookmark.

Bought this today and it is excellent. My mom went to Heaven last month and this is helping me cope, knowing what she and my dad are experiencing now and what we have to look forward to in the future. This author is solidly Scriptural. Highly recommend any of his books.

Commentary with a fresh face

I am working through the epistle of James right now, and have found this book to be a valuable resource. One of the things Swindoll's Insights series has going for it is a fresh and accessible format. These books resemble a textbook layout, with charts, lists and text boxes breaking up the main text. This is easier to peruse than a traditional commentary. Also, while many commentaries are primarily oriented towards theological details, Swindoll makes his words applicable to daily life, with easy diction, modern-day examples and scenarios. This will not be to each person's taste (I tend to prefer deep theological endeavors like John MacArthur's commentaries), yet I have found his words to ring true, to glorify God, and to be of practical help in understanding and applying God's word. Recommended!

New Years Resolution 2011 - Read the next 9

Swindoll's "Insights" is a planned ten book series of NT commentaries and that in itself is good news! Swindoll can always be relied upon for an enjoyable read and he delivers on his talent again. `Insights' is written for an audience that is seeking the `next' level of NT knowledge in 336 pages. This is not a whole lot of pages for 3 extraordinarily complex letters/homilies. The divisions in Christendom revolve around the theology in these texts. By degree and depth, the Insight series is addressed to both the commentary reader and aggressive God-seeker. Swindoll's easygoing writing style is on display and delivers content and depth without academic referential overkill.

Swindoll doesn't reveal a motive for including James & Peter 1-2 in one volume other than, I assume, that they follow one another in the NT. The 3 books are distinctly associated with issues among the Jerusalem Temple Jewish Christian church as opposed to Gentile Christian churches reaching out to pagans or diaspora Jews. In other words, James' and Peter's audience come from a very different theological and social tradition then the Pauline's audience. The subtleties wrapped into understanding "who is the letter written to" are fascinating, but not necessarily apparent in Swindoll's writing. There is a lot more going on behind the scenes then Swindoll has elected to explore.

Swindoll gets my nod as the better writer among the active commentary writing community. He is delightful to read. I enjoy his 1, 2 or 3 sentence prayer associated with the dissected verses and concepts. This writing trait separates Swindoll from more academic types and gives the reader pause to consider the material on a more personal level. If you want gritty depth, I'd suggest NT Wright or Ben Witherington. For the sheer joy of revisiting these books this year, Swindoll's Insights might well be my 2011 study resolution.

Predictably excellent ... I recommend it.

Great for Bible students OR teachers

When I think "Bible commentary," I don't usually think "interesting."

I am interested in the Bible, and I am interested in digging deeper into God's word, but I don't normally assume that I would pick up and read a commentary cover to cover.

Swindoll's Insights series is completely readable, yet also right on target with background information from the times and present-day application.

For example, in expositing James 3, the chapter on the tongue, he uses the example of a dog catcher that rounds up stray and potentially dangerous dogs, and likens it to a position we wish we had -- a word catcher that did the same with our careless words.

I plan to use this guide (and others in the series) for personal study in Bible reading -- to read the chapter and then read his discussion. I will also consult it when teaching on a particular book for both interpretation and application examples.

FORMAT:

Each book has a comprehensive introduction. Then the chapter is broken up and taught section by section. The complete Bible text is included, which makes it handy.

Great personal carry Bible!

Great Bible with really easy to read print, no complaints, but would like to make one small note. The description above says this Bible has 'gold gilded page edges", but the picture shows silver gilding. The picture is correct, not the written description. I prefer gold gilding, but it's not a big enough deal to go through a return process, but this is just a heads up to future buyers.

Great Book for Children

This book is perfect for the children ages 7-12. I've been doing bible studies with this book and it is perfect! However, it is very short. After about 2 months of bible study, we got done this book. Even though it is the preteen version, Henry Blackaby explains the love of God so perfectly and my children love it! I love it too! It has very deep theology. I would really recommend this book!

Reluctant purchase, but I LOVE IT!

This is my first study Bible, and even when I first looked at it I was not sure I would like it. This is the BEST Bible I have ever owned. I love the study part of it, but the life application part is the real cherry on top. For a learning disabled person like myself, it is such a joy to be able to REALLY receive the full benefit of God's word.

Chapman, author of the longstanding megaseller The Five Love Languages, uses his years of marriage counseling and leading marriage seminars as the basis for his thesis that marriages repeatedly go through periods that can be characterized by the seasons of the year. He begins by describing winter, times when marriages are marked by "coldness, harshness, and bitterness." Spring is "where most marriages begin," while summer is filled with fun. He compares an autumn marriage to "the falling of the leaves." Chapman offers detailed explanations of the emotions, attitudes and actions of the marriage seasons as well as the pros and cons of each. The book's second section provides seven strategies to enhance or change the marriage seasons, from dealing with past failures and speaking your spouse's love language to "maximizing differences" and becoming a positive influence. Chapman also specifically addresses how to improve a marriage where a spouse has no desire to change. While it's valuable to have this information in one place, this book isn't different from what Chapman has written, said and taught many times before. A helpful book that will appeal to Christians having marriage troubles

Chapman's tone is that of a friendly, empathetic counselor. First, he invites you to discover which season of marriage you and your spouse are in. These seasons don't progress in order; rather, your marriage is probably fluctuating back and forth between all four, he writes. After you identify your season, Chapman offers seven strategies to help you make the most of that season, and ideas for putting the strategies into practice. As he unpacks the characteristics of each season, Chapman includes profiles of married couples who have come to him for advice and counseling. His hope is to help couples move their marriages from fall or winter into spring or summer.

Marriage, Chapman writes, is both intimate and purposeful. When intimacy --- sharing life in a deep way --- is not attained, we feel troubled. Marriage is also purposeful. It helps us raise our children, and in nurturing and developing our gifts and abilities. "Life is easier when two hearts and minds are committed to working together to face the challenges of the day," he writes.

Spring is where most marriages begin. There is joy, excitement and an anticipation of the future. It's a time of new beginnings and positive changes. Summer means happiness, peace, satisfaction, fun and comfort. There is a sense of accomplishment and a desire to keep growing as a couple. You overlook your spouse's shortcomings, and there is a growing sense of togetherness.

Fall, of course, is a precursor to winter, characterized by sadness, apprehension and rejection. A spouse might feel insecure. The couple drifts apart, disengages. An affair may happen, catapulting the marriage into winter. Winter, he writes, is characterized by the emotions of hurt, anger, disappointment, loneliness and rejection. Our attitude is usually bad. We see problems as too big or unresolvable. Our actions include withdrawal, silence, harsh words and even violent acts. Divorce can be just around the corner. "The marriage is like two people living in separate igloos," writes Chapman.

If you find yourself in a fall or winter season, Chapman assures you this is not hopeless. This leads to the easy marital profile indicator quiz, which may seem a bit simplistic. Next, Chapman unpacks the seven strategies for enhancing the season you find yourself in, from dealing with past failures (confession, repentance, forgiveness), to a very concrete set of ideas about empathetic listening. The third strategy, "Learn to speak your spouse's love language," will feel familiar to readers of THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES, and recaps the ideas from that book. The seventh strategy is one that a spouse can read and implement alone if the other spouse is resistant to working on the marriage. A study guide at the end of the book is suitable for group discussion, with alternate questions for a couple's private use.

There are a few small troubles. Chapman is already touting his THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES by page 26 as he does throughout the book, as well as heavily pushing marriage conferences. Both are worthy things to recommend, but it does feel a bit self-promotional. (He's a popular speaker at marriage conferences.) Some of the analogies feel overly cute (the problems in the season of summer are "yellowjackets," for example; in spring, it's "poison ivy").

But these are minor flaws in a helpful book that should mainly appeal to Christians whose marriages are in trouble, or to fans of Chapman's THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES. Small groups and counselors will appreciate the study guide tucked into the back to help with further explorations.

Something To Talk About!

One of the most beneficial features of this book is the fact that Dr. Chapman describes the emotional seasons of marriage and gives them names we're all familair with - using the seasons. (You can take a free quiz to see your marriage season at 4seasonsofmarriage.com - no personal infomation asked for, either, not even email!) This season idea is very easy for any married couple to grasp and, once a couple identifies the season or seasons they are in, Dr. Chapman's book provides the language and the guidance for a couple to talk about their relationship openly and in a somewhat more observational role when one uses the seasonal analogy. The book is written for any married couple - no matter how many years married. It addresses happy couples and how to sustain the happiness as well as couples in trouble and providines strategies for improvement. A great tool to have on the shelf for all the years of marriage! I find it invaluable.

While "The Four Seasons of Marriage" can be read in a matter of hours, the lessons learned are quite valuable. You can instantly put the ideas into practice because they are practical and wise. Instead of taking a complex problem and making it overwhelmingly difficult to solve, Gary makes everything more simple.

Once you have determined your season (winter, spring, summer, fall) then you can decide to try to stay in a season (summer is comfortable) or move out of a season (like winter which is harsh) more quickly and into a situation you prefer. All that is needed is a little motivation and a sense of determination.

What is the secret to getting your spouse to listen to you?
How can you work on your marriage alone?
How can you affirm your spouses thoughts?

Gary Chapman answers these questions and more.

What I found interesting is that you can experience spring after twenty years of marriage or winter in the first year. Since each relationship is totally unique some seasons may feel more familiar than others. However, Gary believes that you go through the seasons on a continual basis. I have personally found this to be very true.

After reading numerous books on marriage and relationships I think this is one of the best books on the subject. It really makes sense and is written by an author who has been married for over forty-two years. This book also contains a summary of the five love languages.

P.S. I read this again in 2013 and loved it even more the second time. It really does have many practical ideas for self improvement. This is a book you can read over and over again to gleen new wisdom. The second time I read this I was reading it on the Kindle and it seemed to be a very quick read. Gary goes really deep into the counseling process and lets you see how a marriage relationship really works. While reading this book the second time I finally realized what my husband and my love languages were. It was like a revelation. So I'm happy I read this book again.

About the Author
Randy Alcorn is the founder and director of Eternal Perspective Ministries (EPM). He is the author of more than forty books, including Heaven, The Treasure Principle, and the 2002 Gold Medallion winner, Safely Home. Randy and his wife, Nanci, live in Gresham, Oregon. They have two married daughters and several grandchildren.

Charles Spurgeon (1834–1892) was England’s best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. He served for thirty years at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London, and it is estimated that during his lifetime he preached to more than 10 million people. His collected sermons fill sixty-three volumes and remain one of the best-selling series of writings in history.

We Shall See God: Charles Spurgeon's Classic Devotional thoughts on Heaven by Randy Alcorn

Randy Alcorn uses edited excerpts of Spurgeon's sermons about heaven in this devotional and adds some of his own content. They make wonderful compliment to Spurgeon. For those who are not familiar with the life and preaching of Charles Spurgeon, Alcorn introduces him throughout this 40 day devotional. The introduction carries a short biography of his life and work, and then Alcorn weaves other fascinating bits of information into his content. But...this isn't a book to glorify Spurgeon or Alcorn. Its theme is God and the Heaven that He inhabits and shares with His children.

The first few readings are situated in the place where the focus on heaven is the most pronounced, after the death of someone near and dear to us. Sadness gives way to joy as the reader progresses through these opening days. And it continues that way throughout the rest of the book. Alcorn's comments and illustrations help reinforce the encouragement or exhortation that Spurgeon provides. There are a few entries, however, that do focus on the fate of those that refuse to heed the Word. While those are few, they do serve as a reminder and a cause to express gratitude for the grace that is available to us.

As Alcorn aptly says in his first comment, "We should not romanticize death." Spurgeon certainly did not and was well acquainted with sorrow himself as the reader will discover in the readings. This devotional is probably one of the most helpful collections of writings about the topic as I have encountered. I recommend it without reservation.

A Dynamic Duo

Charles Haddon Spurgeon, born in England in 1834, is considered to be one of the greatest preachers of his time and his name continues to be recognized today. We Shall See God is a 50 day devotional book that incorporates Charles Spurgeon's sermons on heaven with Randy Alcorn's personal thoughts and commentary. Because Spurgeon's sermons were typically very long and at times difficult to read because of paragraph structure and language used from that period of time which no longer is understood with the same meaning today, Alcorn edited the sermons to be more "readable" to a contemporary audience. These excerpts were not altered in "content," just made easier to read and understand. Following the portion of Spurgeon's sermon for the day, referenced by the sermon title and number, date, and where or for what occasion it was originally delivered, Randy Alcorn then gives his commentary and thoughts on the issues addressed by Spurgeon.

This is not a casual devotional with a simple verse and thought for the day. To me, they were more theologically deep and thoughtful. It is not what I consider an "easy read." I found Spurgeon's portion a little more difficult to read than Alcorn's commentary, but perhaps that is to be expected since Spurgeon's were delivered as a sermon while Alcorn's thoughts written in more of a devotional way. One thing is certain though, the truths that Spurgeon speaks about continue to be as relevant to today's world, as they were in his time.

If you love Charles Spurgeon, or desire to read about what the Scripture says about heaven, then you will find this book helpful and beneficial. We have the hope of heaven after we die, and this book reminds us of that fact as we make our journey through this sometimes difficult life.

alcorn/spurgeon--great combination

I have been greatly impressed with Alcorn's writings over the last year, and this devotional-type book does NOT disappoint. I have always been overwhelmed with the vast content you can find regarding Spurgeon and his sermons from long ago, so I absolutely love this "concise" book specifically concerning the topic of heaven--a topic near and dear to my heart from May 25, 2010 onward. I was almost concerned that this book would be TOO heavy of reading and that I'd have to sift through these lengthy sermons in order to uncover an applicable illustration. Thankfully, Alcorn has already done the dirty work for us and we can jump right into the "good stuff." Separated into 50 days or chapters, it's easy to systematically work your way through this book without being overwhelmed. Day 9 (Seeing Our Loved Ones In The Morning) is especially thought provoking and encouraging for me personally. A great, great encouragement for those who have had to say goodbye through death to saved loved ones.
