A great way to read the Bible through
By joyinliving
I have an earlier version of the same and have just about worn it out. It's a great way to read through the Bible and while doing so, savor the beautiful way both old and new testaments blend. I love it so much, I bought this book as a gift to give to my dad for his 75th birthday and he loves it!

FABULOUS!!! Get one!
By SparkleRain
This terrific NLT is organized so that you get some of everything each day of the year - part Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament), part Greek Scriptures (New Testament), part Psalms, and a verse or two from Proverbs. It is not randomly organized - the reading from the Hebrew Scriptures is set up thoughtfully so that over the course of a few days you read about an event until you finish that story, and only then do you start on another. I'm used to the New World Translation, which is one of the most accurate around, and I find the NLT to be, in most instances, a pure joy to read. I find that this Bible helped me get my daily Bible reading back on track easily. Plus, this edition looks fabulous. All in all, buy one!

I am finding this a real relaxing way to read the bible, for the first time. Each day after arising I read that day, which is an effortless way to read the bible. It is easy to understand in its' New Living Translation, and I think the way most people reading the bible would like to do it.

Review
"One of the narrators sounds older, the other younger in this optimistic discussion of common marriage challenges. With appealing voices and natural warmth, they work together seamlessly to offer one of Gary Chapman’s most conversational, friendly guides. Chapman’s self-help books are wonderful examples of how to finesse the dilemma of being positive about change without oversimplifying the process. In this one, he offers proactive steps for resolving conflicts about finances, in-laws, children, sex and affection, housework, and divergent interests and values. Each section contains case studies that flow well into memorable principles and action steps. Reminding us that relationships are important but not effortless, this book will help many listeners learn listen, understand, and be more constructive in their marriages."

Marriage Techniques
By S Huber
"Why can't marriage always be like that?" We had just finished watching Pride and Prejudice with Kiera Knightley on New Years Day and were preparing for bed. My wife was deeply moved by the noble and passionate love of Mr. Darcy that is revealed in the end. I was mildly suspicious that this was a set up to expose my lack of romanticism. "Because it's unsustainable," I stated, a bit too matter-of-factly. This launched a conversation that spanned two nights in which we explored my wife's longing for and my own dismissal of this expression of love. It was a circuitous route, this conversation, but it arrived at a satisfying end. I discovered that I fear romanticism because I feel inept in expressing it. Sue realized that this longing is planted in her soul as something too big for marriage to fill - a longing only God can satisfy.

And this is our marriage - two people who love each other deeply but have much to learn about themselves and each other. Sometimes we stumble over each other's feet, and sometimes into each other's arms. Either way, this is a shared journey. In this case, the vulnerable and risky dialogue that paved the way for mutual insight was more than just dialougue - it was intimacy. One more log on the fire of love. A fire that sometimes blazes and other times smolders.

I have a marriage that most people would envy. It's not perfect, but it is durable. Sixteen years of marriage have weathered this relationship. Through the years our love has been pressed and twisted until well worn. It survived crisis that brought the relationship to the brink and led to a period of brief separation about five years ago. We have fought hard to preserve this union. We have the scars to prove it. But the tattered complexion of our love has resulted in a bond that only shared struggle can account for. There is security in a relationship that has been tested and tried.

I just finished reading Happily Ever After: Six Secrets to a Successful Marriage by Gary Chapman. I was sent a free review copy as part of the Tyndale Bloggers Network. The book is a fairly typical example of the marriage enrichment genre, one of the best I have read. It is organized around six major areas of focus: solving conflicts, negotiating change, handling money, raising children, sex, and in-laws. Each section is then broken down into seven or eight chapters dealing with one component of that topic. The chapters are short and straightforward. There are nuggets of insight that are worthwhile. Examples abound from Chapman's vast experience as a marriage counselor, putting flesh on otherwise theoretical abstracts. Each chapters closes with steps to put into practice what has been covered in the chapter. It's a very good book for what it does.

But this is where my history may cloud my review. I react against the glut of marriage books that focus on techniques. With all the emphasis on techniques, marriage is reduced to a skill set, akin to playing chess. Learn the rules, get some strategy, and you can win. But the hard scrabble of life is more dynamic than a chess game. To make techniques the focal point of the relationship, "the secrets to a successful marriage," is to cheapen the relationship.

Techniques are tools. Tools can be useful. But having the tools doesn't hinder these issues from continuing to infiltrate my marriage. Most of these principles were not new to me. Many of them fall under the heading of common sense. When discussing finances, Chapman instructs the reader to live within their means. In handling conflict he focuses on the importance of listening. This is not novel advice. But even familiar, common sense principles still trip me up. Knowing does not always equate to practicing. What saved my marriage and carried us through was not a battery of techniques. If our fundamental need was for techniques, then Scripture would read more like a marriage enrichment book. Instead, it focuses elsewhere.

So maybe there's just one secret to a successful marriage, though this is no more secret than the six Chapman covers. But indulge me for a moment. Grant me the leeway to unveil it with flourish, as if something new and novel. Gather round as I pull back the curtain on this profound insight. The secret (wink, wink) to a successful marriage is the ardent conviction that marriage is a sacred covenant. It is a holy relationship intended as a model and metaphor of another holy relationship - one even more intimate and hard won. It is a promise before God to be faithful to another. A promise not lightly entered, and not lightly broken. As such, it is worth fighting for. This is what held us together. Even when the relationship itself was quite ugly, we fought to restore it. It was a sacred ugliness that we would not give up on until all options has been exhausted. God honored our perseverance. Techniques were useful in fleshing that out, but always secondary to that bedrock resolve.

Marriage suffers when we downgrade it's holiness. Our rush to techniques feels to me like we are slipping toward this downgrade. Techniques are secondary. A devotion to covenant faithfulness is primary. Keep this in focus and Chapman's book can help fill your tool box. Keep this in focus and you will have a successful marriage. Keep this in focus and even "successful" will seem like a cheap word to attach to marriage. Better, marriage will be holy and blessed; a sacred ugliness transformed into sacred beauty.

Liked it a lot
By J. Volkening
First off, I thought this was a really informative advice with a lot of exercises and how-to so you could actually apply this advice to your life. It can sometimes be frustrating when you get advice from a book but have no idea how to apply it to your life and the book gives no examples.

This book is split up into 6 parts. Part one is 'Everybody Wins: Solving Conflicts without Arguing;. Part two is 'Home Improvements: Negotiating Change with Your Spouse. Part three is, ' Profit Sharing: Making Money an Asset in Your Marriage'. Part four is, 'Now What?: Marriage after the Children Arrive'. Part five is, 'Making Love: Making Sex an Act of Love' and part six is, 'In-Law Relationships: Becoming Friends with Your In-Laws'. Then each section was broken up into different chapters.

While overall this book was very good, I felt like I got tons out of some sections and not a lot out of others. The first section about conflict management was fantastic. It was chock full of advice and how-to and I really got a lot out of it. The section about making love fell completely flat for me. It felt like that section was just saying the same thing over and over in different ways. To be honest about mid way through the section I just started skimming.

One last thing I wanted to talk about was, his other book 'The Five Love Languages' is massively referenced in this book. While he does go over each love language in this book I think reading 'The Five Love Languages' first would probably have helped me more with this book.

Overall a very good read and stuffed with lots of practical advice that can help marriages.

I was given this book to review by Tyndale Publishers for free in exchange for my review. I was not required to give a positive review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Great book for new couples
By Sreenadh
Happily Ever After is a book that helps readers to solve conflicts in their marriage. We must learn to respect and listen to our spouses. We have to give up the selfish attitude and the perception that our point of view is the only correct one. If you want to change your spouse we have to realize we can't change others. The plank must be removed from our only eyes before we try and fix someone else. Gary Chapman encouraged readers to ask their parents, God, in-laws, friends, and their spouses how they could improve their relationship in their marriage. This is where you can see your flaws and the issues that you may have that hinder your relationships from growing. Then you must work to fix the issues that you find.

An important part of the book is finding out your love language. The five love languages are gifts, acts of service, physical touch, words of affirmation, and quality time. The book will describe and give an example of how each love languages work. Once you find how you receive and feel loved you need to discover your spouse’s love language. Then if you have children you may want to find out how your children receive and feel loved. This section will greatly mend your relationships.

Happily Ever After is divided into six parts, “Everybody Wins”, “Home Improvements”, Profits Sharing”, “Now What?”, “Making Love”, and “In-Law Relationships”.

Gary Chapman has also included discussion questions at the end of each chapter. The questions will help you to dig deeper into the book.

I would recommend this wonderful marriage book to improve and fix broken marriages. Anyone can benefit from learning their love language, their spouses, and their children love language. The book has provided me with great resources and ideas to resolve conflicts in my relationships. I have learned that I must fix and change myself before I try changing others. I am the only one that I can control. I can’t control others and their opinions. It’s important to stop arguing and listen to the other persons concerns. Marriage isn’t about being always right it’s about coming together for peace and harmony. Making love isn’t about just having sex it’s about showing each other love and respect. We have to learn to listen closely and understand how the other person feels and thinks. If you will apply these six secrets to your marriage it will change your marriage for the better. I am not married yet but when I am, I will be rereading this book to help me in my marriage. This is a great book to give to couples who are getting married or already married! I would also encourage both spouses to read the book together it help you in your marriage. Learn to enjoy each other!

Freefall to Fly: A Breathtaking Journey Toward a Life of Meaning, by Rebekah Lyons

Women today are fading. In a female culture built on Photoshopped perfection and Pinterest fantasies, we’ve lost the ability to dream our own big dreams. So busy trying to do it all and have it all, we’ve missed the life we were really designed for. And we are paying the price. The rise of loneliness, depression, and anxiety among the female population in Western cultures is at an all-time high. Overall, women are two and a half times more likely to take antidepressants than men. What is it about our culture, the expectations, and our way of life that is breaking women down in unprecedented ways?

In this vulnerable memoir of transformation, Rebekah Lyons shares her journey from Atlanta, Georgia, to the heart of Manhattan, where she found herself blindsided by crippling depression and anxiety. Overwhelmed by the pressure to be domestically efficient, professionally astute, and physically attractive, Rebekah finally realized that freedom can come only by facing our greatest fears and fully surrendering to God’s call on our lives. This book is an invitation for all women to take that first step toward freedom. For it is only when we free-fall that we can truly fly.

Review
The author narrates triumphs and troubles, freckled with Bible quotes, as she reaches for self-understanding. She opens with a dramatic move from an Atlanta suburb to manic Manhattan, symbolized by her elder son’s meltdown smack in the middle of Park Avenue. Anecdotes disclose her panic attacks, her lifelong connection to words, and her salvific Tuesday-morning meetings with women who insist that she tell the truth about her worst fears. (Publishers Weekly)

From the Back Cover
The Dark Night of the Soul in the City That Never Sleeps
At first glance, Rebekah Lyons’s life path seemed straightforward: walk the aisle, take the short road to motherhood, and build a family on a suburban cul-de-sac in the South.

But life looked radically different when her family relocated to the heart of New York City. She was forced to navigate a new normal with three kids, two toy poodles, and a minivan. Blindsided by crippling despair, Rebekah wrestled with bigger questions women often ask: Why am I here? Does my life matter?

In a Western culture driven by performance and Pinterest fantasies, her story echoes the rise of loneliness, depression, and anxiety that women are facing at all-time highs. Why are expectations and lifestyles breaking us down in unprecedented ways?

In this beautifully moving memoir of vulnerability, courage, and ultimately transformation, Rebekah shares her journey into the unknown―a thrilling, terrifying freefall that eventually led to flight. Searching for meaning, she stumbled on surrender, discovering that meaning follows surrender.

Rebekah found freedom when she faced her greatest fear, and she invites other women to do the same. For it is only when we freefall that we can truly fly.

Good, but with reservations
By PLM Reader
There are some good thoughts in this book and for 30-something Christian stay-at-home moms with school age children starting to think about next steps in their individual lives and/or women struggling with depression, it will be helpful. Much of this book reminded me of Sue Monk Kidd's "When the Heart Waits," which was a story of a major transitional period of her life when she learned to let go of the exceedingly high expectations she had set for herself to be the perfect Christian wife/mother/volunteer/part-time worker in a Southern suburb. Both of these author's books are good guides to navigating a period of emotional turmoil.

I do have two reservations about this book. First, it really is for women who have significant means and connections and lots of access to back-up child care and homemaking support and/or a spouse with a very flexible job. I was struck by how much of the book finds the author traveling, working out, drinking coffee, at her book group, on retreat, etc. Second, there's a funny underlying message that comes out of the book, which is that personal achievement (successfully "using your gifts") will bring us fulfillment. If we're not careful, that can just be another layer of busy-ness rather than the surrender to God that the author positions it as. Over time, some women may find that just as tiring as the busy-ness of raising a family.

Just Doesn't Quite Get It.
By Jennifer C. Mcilwain
I'm not quite sure what to think about this book. While there are many things to appreciate about Rebekah's story, there are more things with which I'm not quite connecting. To be honest, the subtitle to the book, "A Breathtaking Journey Toward a Life of Meaning" is what caught my attention and made me want to read the book. Who doesn't want to live a life of meaning? I'm always interested in knowing what people consider as "a life of meaning"; especially influential people such as Ms Lyons.
Here are some of the things I marked from the book:

"Limitations of the mundane that used to come so easily. This city would push me to get on my knees, to grovel, to fully enter into my weakness. To strike a child's pose. Rest there. In my cries of lament, I heard a word so clearly it almost sounded audible. Stay. What does that even mean? Stay in the freefall. A truth hit me in that moment. All my life. I've been running. Running to the next greatest thing" (pg. 35)
"We aren't depressed because we are getting old; we are depressed in the prime of our lives. During the years when we ought to be making some of our greatest contributions to others and to the world, we are stuck. Caught in a quagmire of confusion, hardly able to put one foot in front of the other. What is going on? And why now? I'm no medical doctor, and I have no degrees in psychology, but I do love to listen to the stories of women. Women who are in the sweet spot of this demographic who are fighting to make sense of their lives. I hear the stories, unpack their pain, and consistently find a common perpetrator. We don't know who we are." (pg. 67)
"Every life path always works this way, crooked and bending with every decision we make. As difficulty presents itself, do we retreat? Do we teeter for a long while? Do we throw in all our chips and blindly jump? Our choice makes all the difference in where we'll end up. The way we respond to this life happening shapes us. It gives way to the trajectory we find ourselves on." (pg. 78-79)

The above quotes give you a good picture of much of the tone of the book. In many places, I feel Ms Lyons paints with too wide a brush in her observations of women and the "state" we are in. I appreciate her raw honesty about her experiences (especially those interactions with her down syndrome child and the tender love between her as a mother and this son) and her transparency in sharing them is commendable and will be a help to many. However, all women, especially all stay-at-home moms, are not depressed, struggling through their days wondering, "Why am I here?"

I guess Chapter Six is the one that left me the most confused as to exactly what Ms Lyons was trying to say. In this chapter, Ms Lyons recounts a trip she and her husband took to "steal away" for a while. Much of her book seems to be about this need to "steal away" and "find yourself"...to escape the mundane for a while. But what concerns me is this: Ms Lyons writes very poetically. Her prose is beautiful. And she asks contemplative questions that make the reader think. But she talks circles around real truth. She asks questions like: "What treasure am I seeking?" "What if eternal treasure is engaging what God uniquely created me to do?" "What is more despairing? That our treasure from God exists and we can't find it?"

I just wanted to scream the whole time I was reading this chapter, "The treasure is Christ! The treasure is knowing Him and making Him known!" I continued reading past chapter six to the end of the book hoping that Ms Lyons would finally get to real truth, but unfortunately she never gets there. Her discourse continues down more of the same. Me, myself, and I and what is my destiny and me and I and so on it goes.

Thank you Julie with Handlebar Central for sending me the book in exchange for this review!

Disappointing on many levels
By EJVW
The whole time I read this disappointing book I kept wondering where the adults were. The personal anxiety of one woman, shallow by her own admission, who perceives that her panic attacks must mean God wants her to become a writer may seem like an epiphany to her but shouldn't to anyone else. Her story is very familiar to thousands of (mostly) women who for a variety of reasons find their lives paling in comparison to those around them. But the voice calling one to a career/call of fame and fortune is rarely misconstrued as God and certainly shouldn't be promoted in print. Common sense and a grasp of basic theology brings into question whether the author understands what the bible means when the word "call" is used.

Also, the mental health angle falls flat. The author makes it clear she has a temporary form of mental disease so it's not clear why she deems herself an authority on the subject when talking to the 1/4 of women with mental illness. Those women often have a more permanent form of mental health issues and this book is patronizing and dismissive towards them. For example, she speaks lovingly about her father who has been battling chronic mental health issues for years but in the next breath tells women that their anxiety and depression is due to their resistance to following God's call. Is the same true for her father? Is the chapter devoted to him a thinly veiled admonition that he isn't close enough to God and should follow her much more Godly example? The story in which she relates her father-in-law agreeing with his impertinent grandchild that he "buried" his artistic gift by not accepting a scholarship years ago made me cringe, both for the disrespect of the child and to the man. Did it not occur to anyone involved that perhaps this man's sacrifice was a far greater gift than a life of art on the walls? It's telling that the author didn't even consider that perhaps her father-in-law may have been following his own call, just one that wouldn't make him rich or famous, like, say, writing might.

With a confusing argument on mental health, a simplistic and naive assessment of the lessons learned upon moving to New York City, and a very incomplete understanding of God's definition of "call," the book makes this reviewer wonder where the adults--be they friends, family, pastors, or editor--were when pen went to paper.

Bringing Up Boys, by James C. Dobson

Sensible advice and caring encouragement on raising boys from the nation’s most trusted parenting authority, Dr. James Dobson.
With so much confusion about the role of men in our society, it’s no wonder so many parents and teachers are asking questions about how to bring up boys. Why are so many boys in crisis? What qualities should we be trying to instill in young males? Our culture has vilified masculinity and, as a result, an entire generation of boys is growing up without a clear idea of what it means to be a man. In the runaway bestseller Bringing Up Boys, Dr. Dobson draws from his experience as a child psychologist and family counselor, as well as extensive research, to offer advice and encouragement based on a firm foundation of biblical principles. (This new edition is part of Dr. James Dobson’s Building A Family Legacy initiative.)

From Library Journal
As he has in past books (Life on the Edge, LJ 5/1/95), Dobson advises parents from his overtly conservative, Christian stance. A notable Christian activist, powerfully connected right-winger, and founder and president of Focus on the Family, he has written a work with seemingly good intentions: "If you are honest, trustworthy, caring, loving, self-disciplined, and God-fearing, your boys will be influenced by those traits as they age.... So much depends on what they observe in you." True enough. His underlying arguments, however, are peculiarly mean-spirited. Any outsider who threatens traditional family values comes under fierce attack. Most early feminists, for example, "were never married, didn't like children, and deeply resented men, yet they advised millions of women about how to raise their children and, especially, how to produce healthy boys." Dobson also avows that gays suffer from a "disorder." Clearly, the titular advice and encouragement serve Dobson's agenda. While this book is appropriate for certain religious collections, public librarians should exercise caution; there are Christian parenting titles (e.g., William Sears, M.D., & Martha Sears's The Complete Book of Christian Parenting and Child Care, Broadman & Holman, 1997) that don't polemicize and defame as does this. Douglas C. Lord, Connecticut State Lib., Hartford
Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Dobson, a psychologist and family counselor, takes a decidedly conservative approach to the "special challenge of raising boys." Celebrating the natural differences between boys and girls, Dobson outlines biological differences, particular issues in disciplining boys, and the different roles of mothers and fathers. He scoffs at those who attribute differences to social factors. Dobson is particularly critical of feminists and their influence on American culture, for example, the advent of nonsexist toys. Dobson sees the "future of Western civilization" dependent on how we handle the "crisis" of raising the next generation of men. Much of his advice on boy-rearing issues, from discipline to attention deficit disorder to coping with divorce, is biblically based. Each chapter ends with a question-and-answer format. The most controversial chapter examines the origins of homosexuality, calling it a "disorder" that can be cured. Conservative and Christian readers may enjoy Dobson's book; other readers are likely to take issue with some of his observations. Vanessa Bush

I never thought I would enjoy a book by James Dobson
By A Customer
Let me start off by saying I am no conservative Christian. My husband bought this book for me as a sort of last-minute Christmas gift and he had no idea who James Dobson was. But hey, I'll read anything so I gave it a try.
I found myself agreeing with quite a few of his points, mainly about how our culture has become frantic, overscheduled, overworked, and how our children are the losers when parents become less involved in their lives and more involved in their own. He points out how kids who eat dinner with their parents on a regular basis seem to have fewer problems with the law, drugs, etc. He also talks about how popluar culture has become ever more toxic, something we must struggle to help our children cope with or protect them from it. I agree with all of these things, even though I'm considerably more on the liberal end of the spectrum.
At the core of the book (because it is about boys) is that this lack of parental involvement is harder on boys because they naturally need more supervision and guidance than girls to make good decisions. I really enjoyed reading his descriptions of how boys are more active and physical than girls because it gave me some insight into why my three year old loves running in circles roaring, then falling to the ground waving his legs in the air. The book gave me a lot of insight into how boys "work" and I think it will make me worry a lot less that my kid has something wrong with him if he finds it hard to sit still during Mass.
I skimmed over some of the chapter on homosexuality, enough to know I was going to have to agree to disagree with him on that one. However, I was surprised that his tone in that chapter was full of sympathy for the kid who thinks he's gay, although his opinion of what to do about it differs from mine. His opinions of feminism I both agreed and disagreed with. To say the early feminists only had great ideas and no loony ones is to simplify a movement that was important but also very complex, and which has had good and bad lasting changes on our society. I will probably check his notes and read some of the writings he refers to to see if he put his own spin and opinion on these quotes or if he is reporting these womens' opinions accurately. I also skipped throught the last chapter, which basically says that Christianity is the only religion that satisfactorily answers all the questions about why are we here and what are we supposed to do.
And finally, to address a couple of critiscims I read in the bad reviews. While he does believe in a stricter brand of discipline than is politically correct right now and probably has more faith in spaking than I personally do, I never got the impression that he thought you should be whacking your kids around all day, in fact much the opposite. He advocates keeping your cool, your patience, punishing when you need to but avoid constantly punishing and criticizing your child. I agree when he says we're the parents and we do need to assert our authority. And as for having a parent at home, well, I made the decision to be a stay at home mom because I saw value in having a parent at home and fighting against the hectic lifestyles that are becoming the norm in our society. So I basically agree with him on this one. But he DOES say that he knows some women need to work for financial reasons or EMOTIONAL ones, and he hopes that if you do work that you make the effort to stay connected with your kids and find stable child care for them.
So...I enjoyed the book, learned a lot about boys, and kept my anger at differing opinions in check by skipping over those parts and knowing that I wasn't going to agree lockstep with all that Mr. Dobson had to say. But overall I think it's a good insight into our sons especially for those of us moms who were calm girly girls.

Of course you won't like this book
By Gary J. Nave
Having read a dozen or more negative reviews my conclusion is that they generally just come down to a disagreement on Dobson's view of certain issues, and not the meat of the book per say. These issues could be summarized in, the breakdown of the traditional family, misunderstanding of gender roles, and the effeminizing of males in our society. The majority of people who will negatively review this book are those who already disagree with it ideologically from the get-go.

The thing about "Bringing up Boys" is that it does not hit solely on the problem of radical feminism and homosexuality as it's main premise (despite what you may be led to believe by reading 1 and/or 2 star reviews), although it does highlight them in some areas as the main instigators of a deeper societal problem. The book actually focuses more on the importance of self-esteem, protecting your children from psychological abuse (i.e. teasing), self-control, the effects of violent media, the importance of positive role models, and highlighting the positive strengths of being male.

What you will get in this book is a world-view for raising boys. Despite what you may have been told, it is not about legalism, sexism, intolerance, "papal" obeisance, or whatever else you equate to religion, but instead a greater awareness of who your son is, through a Christian understanding of love, acceptance, and self-worth.

My advice is:
1. If you detest Christian worldview, then don't buy this book - it will rankle your skin
2. If you think you might disagree with something but can be an honest ideologist then eat the meat and spit out the "bones" - there's plenty of meat.
3. If you've read other Dobson material and/or believe in what Focus on the Family is doing then you will probably like this book - if nothing else, it will push you towards praying for your children and your country.

Lastly, I read several other posts by single parents who felt alienated by the books focus on the "nuclear family" (mom and dad). It's too bad the book felt so condemning for you. I would advise that you go to the Dobson's website and do a search on single parenting, where you will find several articles/books/CD's with help for what you are looking for.

Refreshing And Much Needed - Pediatrician
By A Customer
I am a Pediatrician, and a patient's mother left this book following a visit. I took it home and began to look through it - I see such "How to raise kids" books frequently, as you can imagine. Most of it was good, solid, practical advice. Most parenting books are reminders of what we tend to forget in the hustle and bustle of daily life. That's a compliment, not a criticism. We physicians welcome any counsel to parents to relax about their little darlings, not fret about their child being slower or faster than another in their development, wondering if each challenge is evidence of some dire malady or another.
What I really liked about the book is the refreshing reminders about the nature of boys. Their physicality, their noise-level, their energy, their love of competition, weapons made from bread or play-dough, their dirty pants and laughter at funny sounds. That "the experts" believe that these are socialized or learned behaviors, and that "boys and girls are the same" has been a terrible disservice to our nation's little guys - and their parents.
Along with this calming counsel are chapters on the responsibility that comes with being a male. Finally, I dare to hope, boys may start to be raised to be men!
Hats off to the good doctor - I returned my patient's book and bought several copies for myself and colleagues.
Enjoy your boys!

Nice Devotional For Dedicated Runners
By BabyRaineDrops
I had to have it!!

I was very excited when the opportunity arose to review The Runner's Devotional. Running and God? Yes please.

I have not read the whole devotional, but I feel that I can acurrately review it. I wanted to read the whole thing before I opened the cover, but once I started reading it, I wanted to treasure this little gem for a whole year.

If you have ever read or started to read a devotional, you probably know that if it does not grab you in the first couple of days, it was a waste of money. It should not feel like a chore to read. It should feel like something you enjoy reading. I enjoy this book.

The authors Dana Niesluchowski, and Dave Veerman have run marathons - they understand fitness. Dana is a mom to a young son. I feel like I can connect with them.

The book is broken up into 52 weeks, with a training log space after every week. You can read a whole week at once or you can read some each day according to their suggested way to divide it up. There are stories, there are Bible passages, there are sections on The Runner, The Race, The Result and *Think It Through* section, which is one of my favorites.

My copy is already strewn with highlighted sections, which means you know I love it.

If you are a Christian runner or runner who wants to learn more about Christ you will enjoy this devotional! If you aren't a dedicated runner you might want to find another devotional, because I really think you have to be a runner, in order to truly enjoy this book. Also as I said before and contrary to other reviews you can absolutely read a little bit of this book each day and not just read one week at a time.

Note: Tyndale House Publishers provided me with a complimentary copy of this book. I was not paid for this review and the opinions are my own.

The Runner's Devotional review
By Bradley C. Gilbert
MY TAKE: First, let me admit I requested this book because I was in the last half of a successful diet and really wanted to get into long distance running. But that was BEFORE I tore both of the meniscus and my ACL in my left knee, which not only stopped the diet/weight loss, but shelved any possible notion of me taking up running. Still, I found this book to be not only interesting, but I could see it being helpful for someone who is either an avid runner, or an aspiring one to be. There seems to be many good training tips throughout, and a weekly chart to keep tabs of your progress. The book is a little "lite" on the Bible, but makes good applications from running and the nuances of marathons and training to the everyday spiritual aspect of life.

MY RECOMMENDATION: I could see this book being very helpful to anyone who is a runner, and the weekly logs at the end of each chapter seem helpful. But let me caution you on two things:

This is set up as a weekly devotional, and not an every day devotional.
This is strictly geared to the runner, and probably would not be very useful to someone who is not.
But, if you are a runner and understand that this is not a daily devotional, I think you will be helped by this book.

NOTE: Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

The Runner's Devotional
By C. Kendall
I'm actually not a runner. I would love to be, but a bad knee and bad back simply won't allow it. I even dream about running sometimes. I am however, an avid walker, exerciser and all-around health nut. For those reasons I felt like The Runner's Devotional would be a good match for someone like me. Now, this devotional is written by a father-daughter pair of runners, and it does focus on running as the title suggests, but I found a great deal of inspiration about life in this book, especially enduring life's trials. This devotional also had a lot of health and fitness tips that certainly appeals to me because included with inspirational stories and Bible verses, there are also tips for physical health. So, this is an all-around useful, practical devotional for those who want to run the race with grace and good health - two things I care very much about.

Now, I haven't read the entire book because it is a fifty-two week devotional, but I have enjoyed what I have read already and I look forward to keeping it up each day. I may not exercise my body everyday, but I do see the importance of exercising my spirit everyday and The Runner's Devotional is a wonderful companion. I highly recommend this devotional, especially for runners, but also for folks like me.

marriage mentor in a devotional
By sclubmama
One of the smartest pieces of marital advice we got and now give is to find another couple to mentor you. Nothing fancy, but just tell you about their marriage - the ups AND downs. Help you navigate these waters that are tumultuous just as often as serene. We have a wonderful couple who has been this to us for the past several years.

image via Amazon.com

That, in affect, is what "The Uncommon Marriage Adventure" by Tony and Lauren Dungy is - in devotional form. This once a day devotional tells the ups and downs of the Dungy marriage and family life. Nothing new under the sun, necessarily, but great advice paired with biblical wisdom.

I didn't get to read this through with my husband but combed through it myself. I didn't just learn from Lauren but from Tony's husband perspective. Sometimes I think I need marriage advice and counseling much more than my selfless husband.

He has Day 64 down perfectly: "Be willing to step up and do a little more than usual when the situation requires it." This message is paired with the Scripture 1 John 3:11, 16 which talks about giving up our lives for our brothers and sisters. Big A has done that gracefully these past few weeks of gestation. He's done dishes every day (even yesterday when he was ill himself) because that smell just makes me ill. He's cooked most of our meals. He's brought me cereal at 6:30 every morning. It's just a beautiful reminder to me of how Christ loves us.

That's the kind of selfless love that "The Uncommon Marriage Adventure" urges us toward. Loving one another as Christ loves us; doing for others because we love them without expecting a return gesture. Old-fashioned romance that doesn't seem old when you're in it.

An Excellent And Practical Devotional For Christian Husbands And Wives
By Nathan Albright
[Note: This book was provided free of charge by Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for an honest review.]

I must admit that before this book I was not familiar with either Tony or Lauren Dungy as authors, although from what I could tell both of them have written quite a bit, including children’s literature. I am, however, familiar with Tony Dungy’s career from his Super Bowl winning time with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a player to his coaching career that started in Pittsburgh as an assistant and then wound its way through Kansas City and Minnesota before he had a Hall-of-Fame worthy career as a head coach in Tampa Bay and Indianapolis (where he won a Super Bowl). Unsurprisingly, this book is colored with a great deal of discussion about what it means to be a husband and father while being a football coach, and what it is like being the wife of a football coach, and this book benefits from the fact that both authors are real about what is meant and appreciative of each other.

This book is structured as a devotional with sixteen weeks worth of lessons, with short chapters directed specifically at either men or women which largely alternate between the two, those written by Lauren for wives and those written by Tony for husbands. The Sabbath day of every week is devoted to a practical application of one of the six lessons discussed during the week, and the lessons as a whole tend to be straightforward. The book is clearly designed for those who are already married or considering marriage, advocating premarital counseling (as well as mentoring from an older successful couple), but some aspects of it, including the advice to be patient in God’s timing as well as use the time one is waiting to prepare your heart and mind for success, is definitely wise advice. The book does not offer advice that is novel–it is biblical in its approach and focuses on the need for commitment, encouragement, good communication, compassion, respect, often expressed in different contexts and different ways. In fact, the book is very clear about its eight fundamental principles: look to the Bible as your guidebook and to Christ as your living example, stay in sync spiritually, manage expectations and appreciate your differences, work as a team, practice committed love, communicate well and often, don’t run away from conflict, support each other in serving others. These are all sound principles.

Among the many qualities that make this book excellent is the fact that it is real. It is clear from this book that both authors care deeply for each other, respect each other highly, and are committed to each other’s well being. They do not pretend to have life harder or easier than they really have–they talk about adopting children as a way of encouraging birth mothers to avoid murdering their unborn as a commitment to pro-life principles, talk openly about their Christianity, about their mistakes, about vacations and second homes and skyping their grown-up offspring to keep in touch. The book is direct, well-written, and very clear, and filled with short and easily digestible principles told with honesty and humility. Among its gems is the following quote form page 227: “I think there are times when God welcomes the circus into our lives to give us an opportunity to show that there’s another way to live and respond to things.” Indeed there is, and this book definitely provides it.

Right upfront I'll say that our family are big fans of Tony Dungy so I was pretty sure I'd like this before I opened the cover
By sc2424
Another winner by Tony Dungy and his wife Lauren! Right upfront I'll say that our family are big fans of Tony Dungy so I was pretty sure I'd like this before I opened the cover. I actually have not read his book Uncommon Marriage (somehow I missed that, but I'll look for it now!) but this devotional does not depend on your having read that book.

This book Uncommon Marriage Adventure is a daily devotional intended to be read by both husband and wife, with some days written by Tony Dungy and others written by his wife Lauren. Some days' entries are a more geared toward the husband, some more toward the wife, some toward the family. The book is intended to be read by married (or soon-to-be) couples. It addresses 8 key topics which the authors identified as "The Core Principles of an Uncommon Marriage" --

1. Look to the Bible as your guidebook and to Christ as your living example
2. Stay in sync spiritually
3. Manage expectations and appreciate your differences
4. Work as a team
5. Practice committed love
6. Communicate well and often
7. Don't run away from conflict
8. Support each other in serving others

The daily devotions center on one of these 8 topics (2 weeks per topic). The authors seem very down-to-earth and easy to identify with through their writings. They're pretty much a superstar family (I mean, TONY DUNGY!!!!!) but as you read through you identify with struggles and issues that they mention.

Each day has a topic, a core practice (or principle), Scripture passage(s) and a narration followed by an application section. I found that this is very easy to read and is a good addition to a daily time spent with God.

I enjoyed this book and will recommend it to others. It might not be all brand new ideas, but they are ideas that we need to be reminded of throughout life.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review. I was not required to write a positive review.
