Try another NLT Bible
By Shannon Branch
NLT is a great modern translation. However, the binding for THIS bible is pretty bad! It's so tight that I struggle to see the text closest to the spine.

Beautiful but difficult to use
By A. King
Beautiful but a little difficult to be used for bible study. It doesn't lay flat when open and the binding is so tight it's hard to read the words close to the inside margins.

Bookbinding issue
By Jeff C. Robertson
Nice low cost Bible. The spine is very firm making reading of the inside print difficult. I can fold it back and it seems strong enough to not crack or tear. It does recover and closes flat. May be difficult to manage for someone with petite or weak hands.

Whole: An Honest Look at the Holes in Your Life--and How to Let God Fill Them, by Lisa Whittle

How to get past whatever’s holding you back―and start living a whole new story

We all have holes in our lives―those things we lament about ourselves. Those things we allow to define us in ways we don’t like. Those things that keep us from living the life God wants for us.

But what if you discovered that the holes in your life are really the things that will ultimately make you . . . well, whole?

Author and communicator Lisa Whittle knows this all too well. When her world was rocked to the core in a very public way, her faith and whole reason for living were challenged like never before. In that moment, Lisa was confronted by the holes in her spiritual life. And what she learned not only changed her life, but could bring great possibilities to yours.

In Whole, Lisa calls you to take an honest look at your holes, discover how to fill them with God’s presence, and get to a real and vibrant place of wholeness instead. In her trademark bold, compassionate, and relatable voice, Lisa takes you on a transformational journey of understanding who you really are . . . and what you were born to be and do.

Review
"Using a play on words—“hole” versus “whole”—Whittle delivers her own work with painful honesty. In crisp, clear diction she focuses on three areas of life that commonly have “holes”: religion, roles, and experiences. Matching voice to mood, she portrays her transformational healing journey, richly recounting how God spun the things she most disliked about herself into healing and complete wholeness. Her characterization of how God was the hammer and she was the nail He hammered brings tears. As she describes her feelings and struggles at pivotal moments in her life, her voice captures the emotions of her journey. Ultimately, she learns to draw close to God, accept His love and grace, and become the woman He created her to be."

Finding Wholeness in God
By Heather King
When I picked up Lisa Whittle's book, I expected a "yeah, yeah, yeah" read. You know the kind where every page tells you things you've heard a million times. I think the subtitle tricked me into thinking this book would rattle off the familiar mantra: we have a God-shaped hole in our lives that only He can fill. But I was wrong.

The beginning chapters didn't rock my world. Her personal story spoke volumes about the way churches sometimes fail the people in them, especially those in leadership. Still, she didn't give a clear, practical picture of what she meant by loving the church and yet not suffering from religious addiction.

Her chapters on the Hole of Roles and the Hole of Experiences, however, were real, vulnerable, and challenging. If you've ever wrapped up your identity in the roles you fill or allowed it to depend on your past experiences, this book will walk you through laying that down, as well as dealing with both failure and loss.

Lisa Whittle shares personal stories with more openness and honesty than most authors do, which makes this read compelling and personally relevant. While she undergirds her thoughts with an occasional Scripture verse, mostly the book is driven by her own story. I'd have liked a little more grounding in Bible study, but that doesn't negate the powerful reminder to find freedom and wholeness in God's presence.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Thought Provoking
By Pilar Arsenec - Ordinary Servant Book Reviews
{W}hole by Lisa Whittle is about how our life experiences, whether good or bad, can leave holes in us. These holes effect how we see ourselves, others and God. Lisa Whittle shares her personal testimony (and holes) throughout this honest and revelatory book. She states, that our experiences and/or roles don't define us. But it's about allowing Jesus Christ to fill our holes, by making us "whole" and thereby re-writing our story.

This book is jam packed full of incredible insights which made me take my sweet time reading it. I would read a page and then stop to reflect on it. I would find myself underlining passages and then thinking about it the rest of the day. This is one of those special books that can change your life.

I really appreciate Lisa Whittle's transparency in revealing some very painful and personal experiences in her life. I was able to identify with a lot of what she wrote, especially the feelings accompanying those experiences. It actually stirred me and made me reflect upon my own holes. The holes that I would rather ignore, bury or run from. The holes that came from very pivotal or painful moments in my life, which in turn, changed the course of my life.

As a result, this book wasn't easy for me to read. However, it was necessary as it was timely.

I want to share some passages from this book that spoke to me:

* Often, the things we find most demanding and difficult are the very places we most need to have healed.

* God seeks our dependence upon Him to make us whole.

* Wholeness rises from the ashes of our experiences when we cling to the God who makes it all possible.

I believe this is a very important and helpful book and I highly recommend it to everyone.

In conclusion, I received a complimentary copy of this book for review purposes from Tyndale House.

Life Transforming
By kristen4mk
The holes in your life can ultimately be what make you WHOLE. Very thought provoking. Lisa Whittle shares her heart and life to illustrate the truth that although we will have challenges, things that shake our beliefs and life in general, that God still wants us to be whole. Our experiences can be just that - experiences. Not the sole definer of all that He has made us to be and the end of our story.

She is very transparent in her story (it seems she holds nothing back!) and I admire her for that. From her notes at the end, I thought it was interesting that she felt she was supposed to "come at the book from my failures, not my successes". It's an interesting perspective and a powerful one, I believe.

I was really excited to read this book, as I have so much in common with Lisa Whittle. She is a pastor's daughter, she's been married the same amount of time as I have, they planted a church (we are planting now with our 1st anniversary in a few weeks), and we have both experienced holes - as well as some wholeness through a deeper relationship with God.

My favorite part is towards the end of the book; due to a number of circumstances she is feeling pretty raw, and God says to her, "Lisa, I love you. I know you are hurting right now, and I know why. But in these months of doing Thrive Church, have you gotten to know Me better?"

She answers yes. He says, "If then you have gotten to know Me better and you were created for that purpose, how can you consider your experience with Thrive Church a failure? It is instead a wild success."

I was so moved by this because I've been there (challenging circumstances, feeling like a failure, when will things ever "get better", and although I wouldn't want to live those specific circumstances again, necessarily...I am grateful for the result of knowing Him better. Priceless. A wild success. :)

I love this Bible!
By SJ
I was looking for an NLT Study Bible and am so glad I found the Life Application version. I absolutely adore this Bible! The cover is fabulous - soft, but sturdy and I love the two-tone brown color. The study notes are great and help give me more meaning to the verse that I am studying. This has been a great addition to my Bible Study. I love the side indexed thumb labels so I can easily find what I am looking for. I would highly recommend this Bible and the NLT translation is terrific!

Review Of Life Application Study Bible NLT, TuTone
By Matthew
Beautiful Bible. Love the thumb index, since I use it to find the books in the bible about 4.28 times faster than without the index. The first bible I have purchased for more than 30 years. All the others were given to me, so I did not have a need, but, I needed one with a thumb index, and this filled the bill perfectly. I love the New Living Testament writing also. Just like regular English. I love the King James Version also, but it is nice to get a view point from the modern day perspective!

Thumb index?
By Will
Great Bible, however the one I received did not have a thumb index. The item description does not mention a thumb index, but other reviewers apparently received books with an index. I ordered this for my daughter who specifically asked for the thumb index. I'm sending this one back.

Amazon.com Review
Having survived the wrath of the Lamb--a global earthquake in the 21st month of the Tribulation--pilot Rayford Steele and reporter Buck Williams now embark on a journey of absorbing adventure and Christian triumph. Soul Harvest is book four in the enormously popular Left Behind series (seven books are planned in all), based on those who are left behind in the Rapture. Written with the same gripping pace of Tom Clancy and John Grisham (film rights have already been sold for the first two books), the authors take us to Iraq, America, underground shelters, and the bottom of the Tigris river as Steele and Williams search for loved ones. Meanwhile, biblical prophecies are fulfilled at every turn, including the great soul harvest. For many Christian followers, this series has become a tangible and thrilling testament to the Book of Revelations. --Gail Hudson

From Library Journal
The fourth book in the "Left Behind" series (Nicolae, Tyndale, 1997) brings back Rayford Steele and Buck Williams, staunch members of the Tribulation Force, an evangelical group fighting evil Nicolae Carpathia. An earthquake has left both men searching for their loved ones while they attempt to bring about Nicolae's downfall. Readers of the earlier books should be thrilled at the return of their heroes, and the action and intrigue here certainly matches that in the rest of the series. Characterization, especially of the female characters, is thin, but that shouldn't dull fans' demand.

From the Back Cover
Carpathia raises the dead; millions in awe. World government, finance, media, religion centralized in New Babylon. Earthquakes, hail, fire devastate globe; billions homeless.

The Tribulation Force undergoes brutal trials as they work to subvert the demonic schemes of the Antichrist. After an earthquake wipes out a quarter of the world’s population, Rayford Steele searches frantically for his wife. What he finds drives him to murderous madness.

Buck Williams rescues as many Trib Force members as he can―including his wife, Chloe―as new believers join the Force. But can the newcomers be trusted?

From deep underground, Tsion Ben-Judah’s Web site attracts millions to the true Messiah. Ben-Judah prepares to meet them in Jerusalem for the much-anticipated Soul Harvest―if Carpathia’s dark forces don’t find him first.

Soul Harvest is #4 in the phenomenal New York Times best-selling Left Behind series that rocked the publishing world and made millions think seriously about the future and their places in it.

With special features relating to current events and end-times prophecy.

Another in a great series...
By A Customer
After putting my wife off for several months to read 'Left Behind,' I have quickly raced through the first four books in the series, ending recently with Soul Harvest.
This book matches the intensity and excitment of the prior three installments, using the environment outlined in the Book of Revelations to tell the continuing story of Rayford Steele, Buck Williams and the rest of the Tribulation Force.
Without giving anything away, this installment has enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested from start to finish. Oddly, being a Christian and knowing where all of this is going, does nothing to dull the excitement of following the story as it develops.
The vivid writing of Lahaye and Jenkins makes it possible to visually put yourself into the scene and almost experience the subject matter firsthand.
If you are a believer and have not read any of these books, you are not doing yourself justice. These are great writings and do a great job of bringing the Word of God to life in a new and vibrant manner.

Christ Clone Trilogy is SO MUCH BETTER
By Ruth
I stopped reading this series after #4 (Soul Harvest). I kept reading Left Behind hoping it would get better. It didn't. I also read (actually started reading) We All Fall Down, but there the foul language was SO EXCESSIVE I couldn't keep going. Finally I read the books of The Christ Clone Trilogy (why do I feel like Goldilocks here?) and it was "just right!" Actually it was GREAT! So if you're tired of Buck and Rayford playing James Bond, and all the females in the LB world cooing, have a look at The Christ Clone Trilogy.

It's Going to Happen
By Nanjean
To all those criticizing the writing style, you're missing the point. For years, men have ignored the Book of all time. LaHaye and Jenkins have woven a story of intrigue that would reach all ages and levels of intelligence. But the bigger picture is that they're telling the story in modern-day terms because the days are short. This has made the book of Revelation live for me as never before and I was raised in the church. I'm sure it has gotten the attention of many who are re-thinking their values and getting their lives in order. A big thank you to the authors for making it so plain!

All you could want to know before reading this book
By Hans P. Hansen
Introduction

The Bible. A book that seems to have some controversy or other over every minute detail. There is hardly a verse that has not been the subject of hot debates between theologians and scholars and often laypeople. Perhaps it is no wonder, then, that there is controversy over its origins as well. After all, if the book is so important as to inspire this level of controversy, it must be important to make sure we have the right material in the book, because if we don't, then how can we really come to any conclusions at all? How can there be answers to any of this controversy? More importantly, the reason that the Bible has been the topic of all this controversy, is that Christians believe it to be the Word of God. If God really has spoken to us, it is obviously vital that we do our utmost to know what He said.

In the Origin of the Bible, Philip Comfort compiles fifteen essays by well-known and respected authors and professors with many years of experience in the topics that they write on. The book is an attempt to establish the authority and inspiration of the Bible and then to show that the Bible read by Protestant Christians today is essentially unchanged from that which was written by the biblical authors thousands of years ago, from Moses to the Apostle John. That is, that the Bible was inspired by God, and that our current Bibles are true to that original inspired text.

Summary

The book is broken down into five sections, each dealing with a specific subject pertaining to the Bible's origin. The first section begins with an essay by the renowned professor of Biblical Criticism F. F. Bruce which simply gives an overview of much that is to be covered later in the book, stating succinctly what the other authors will discuss in greater detail. Following this, the authority, inspiration, inerrancy, and infallibility of the Bible are discussed, with the authors not only arguing that these are all characteristics of the Bible, but also showing the pitfalls that await those who fail to attribute these characteristics to the Bible; often with examples from history.

After closing out the section on the authority and inspiration of the Bible, there are three essays that deal with the question of how the canon of the Scriptures was decided. The author's show that there was much more to it than simply a vote at the Council of Nicaea and Milton Fisher ends his article with the words, “No Christian, confident in the providential working of his God and informed about the true nature of canonicity of his Word, should be disturbed about the dependability of the Bible we now possess” (78).

There follow two essays showing how each book of the Bible is similar to the literature of the day in which it was written and arguing very convincingly that the Bible can, and indeed should be understood as a work of literature, though not only as a work of literature. After these essays, there is a section on the texts and manuscripts of the Bible, showing the reason for the text that we have in our Bible and defending the lower criticism that was done to arrive at this end product.

Finally, there is a section on the translation of the Bible. This begins with an essay on Biblical languages, focusing on how the languages God ordained to use were aptly suited to the content He inspired and how we can better understand that content. To close out the book, there is an overview of Bible translation, a History of the English Bible, and finally an essay that looks at the various historic versions of the Bible and how useful they are for lower criticism.

Critical Evaluation

On the face of it, the scope of this book may not seem very broad, but looking more closely at each essay, it is clear that whole books have been written on topics that are covered here in 10-30 pages. The purpose of the book stated in the introduction of this paper, can really be broken down into two parts. The first part, is that the book attempts to show the authority and inspiration of the Bible. This is undertaken in the first four essays, which make up the first of the five sections of the book.

In the second essay of the book, Professor Carl Henry shows first how the authority of the Bible has been challenged and then moves to defending its authority. He particularly uses “The Bible's view of itself” to support its authority (19). He brings up the fact that the Old Testament is filled with the phrase “Thus saith the Lord” and that Jesus often introduces statements with the words “But I say unto you” (19). He goes on to use many New Testament verses to show that the authors of the Scriptures believed what they wrote and what other Bible authors had written before them to be the inspired Word of God (20). The argument seems to be that if the Bible has any merit or authority at all, it has complete authority. This argument is similar to Lewis' trilemma from Mere Christianity, where he states that Jesus was a liar, a lunatic, or the Son of God. The alternatives are not stated, but assumed. Henry's argument is brief, but he makes his point very well. He moves on to show that his view of the authority of Scripture, is one with the whole history of the Church behind it.

Packer, in the third essay, argues for the inspiration of the Bible. First, he quickly deals with the fact that the Scriptures are inspired and not merely inspiring and then goes on to deal with the real issue at hand. Packer uses 2 Timothy 3:16 as the obvious starting point for an article on the inspiration of the Scriptures, stating that “the essential idea here is that all Scripture has the same character as the prophets' sermons had” (30). He argues that “the Scripture are God's own words” citing many verses, including 2 Peter 1:20-21 and then shows how New Testament authors quote the Old Testament and attribute the quotations either directly or indirectly to God Himself (32-33). His second argument is that the only part man had in producing Scripture was to transmit what he received, citing the prophets, the apostles, and Jesus in verses where they each state that they received words from God (33). He goes on to argue against the idea that this view removes the personality of the human author and makes him simply one who listens to a dictation or writes automatically (35-36). The abundance of Scripture that Packer cites, lends credence to his view, and on closer examination, it is clear that the verses he cites, are cited in a way that is true to their context.

The second part of the purpose of this book, is to show that the current version of the Bible accepted by Protestant Christians, is still the inspired Word of God. This is dealt with primarily in the second, fourth, and fifth sections of the book.

The second section focuses on how the canons of the Old and New Testament were decided and what was done with the Apocrypha. After the first section of the book, the second is close behind in importance, dispelling myths about the formation of the canon in a clear, concise manner and inspiring trust in the canon that has been transmitted to us.

In the first essay of this section, the formation of the Old Testament canon is broken down into three stages and books of the Old Testament are shown to have been accepted as they were received and not cobbled together arbitrarily at some later date. Beckwith cites both the apocryphal 1 and 2 Maccabees, as well as the famous first century Jewish historian Josephus in showing that the entire canon of the Old Testament was established hundreds of years prior to the birth of Christ (60-61).

The second essay of section two, deals with the formation of the canon of the New Testament. Fisher breaks down this formation into five periods ranging from the second half of the first century, to the end of the fourth century. He stresses that the main reason that it took so long for the New Testament canon to be assembled, was that the various books were distributed over a very large geographical area and when they began to circulate, some were uncertain when receiving the letter second or third hand, whether or not it was, in fact, inspired (67). The main point to take from this article, is that we can be sure that the majority of the books of the New Testament were accepted as Scripture by those who received them initially, and that we have evidence that the majority of the New Testament was being copied and accepted at least in some regions by the early-mid second century (69-70). These two articles instill great faith that the books that are in our Bible are really inspired by God. I would recommend these two articles to every Christian.

Section four examines the manuscripts and texts that have been preserved and gives a little of the history of how they have come down to us. The second essay in this section (which deals with the texts and manuscripts of the New Testament), is particularly good. Comfort does an admirable job of sifting through a great deal of information and condensing the history of the transmission of the New Testament into twenty-eight very readable pages. He cites all the most important manuscripts and gives brief descriptions. He emphasizes how many manuscripts we do have that were written in the first few centuries AD, including a few that are removed only a few decades from the actual authors. Comfort does a very good job of showing the history of lower criticism and explaining the reasons for no longer using the Textus Receptus. Comfort handles what for some is still a delicate issue, with care and simply lays out the facts.

Section five examines the history and practice of Bible translation from the original languages into various others, with emphasis on its translation into English, devoting an entire essay to the English Bible. Here, the essay on Biblical Languages is very helpful. Walker gives a brief overview of why the Bible was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic and then goes into a detailed description of each language, showing how the languages themselves affected how the Bible was written and what could be said and how that might be interpreted in English. This essay makes it very evident why there are often varying views on how certain verses should be translated.

The third section seems somewhat out of place in the book. Though it does provide valuable information about the literary nature of the Bible, it seems somewhat divorced from the rest of the book. Perhaps it would be good to include the first of the two essays, which compares the Bible to literature of its day, but the second essay seems out of place. Doubtless the Bible is a literary masterpiece, but this article seems incongruous in the middle of a book focused on the origin and transmission of the Bible. Understanding the Bible as a literary text may be a great thing, but an in depth understanding of this it does not fit within the scope of a book entitled, The Origin of the Bible, as it really has nothing to do with the origin of the Bible. This is the only complaint I have about this book, the essay simply doesn't seem to fit.

Conclusion

Overall, the book is a wonderful defense of the Bible as the authoritative, inspired Word of God. It may be a lot to wade through for some, but it is well worth wading in deep to be drenched by this bibliological treasure trove. I would recommend this book for anyone who struggles with the questions about the origin or authority of the Bible, from ministers to laymen. It is a fairly accessible book, but it does require at least a little commitment to make it all the way through.

Superb
By Amazon Consumer
A classic work. Perfect for any "intro to the Bible" college course. Covers the whole gamot, and its great to have scholars on each subject write in the area they specialize in.
This edition is the same as the previous one, except that it has a new chapter by Comfort entitled "Recent Developments," which is largely focused on new translations.
My only complaint is that the book could have used a discussion on the sufficiency of scripture (e.g., "sola scriptura" debate). But it's touched upon briefly by some of the other essays.

How the Bible was inspired.
By Sue
"The Origin of the Bible" asks and answers the question - What was the origin of the Bible and how was it inspired?
I read this book back on 2005 and wrote on the inside cover - "Very Technical Reference Book." My copy is all marked with excellent insights from the authors. It is not an easy book to complete but it is well worth the effort.
Pastors, Bible teachers students and seminarians will love this book and consider it a welcome addition to their libraries. I certainly do.

Not as good as I thought it would be
By Aiden
I'm a big fan of Dr. Dobson's, so I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, I was left disappointed. It seemed that there was little practical advice. Instead, there were pages upon pages of warning about how depraved our culture has become and how toxic it is to girls. It was filled with discouraging statistics. There is a place for such warnings and such statistics, but I thought that this book focused on them without providing the counterbalance--the advice of how to help our daughters grow strong and healthy, avoiding becoming one of those statistics. Despite this, there were a few gems in the book. The one that stands out the most for me was the early emphasis on the role of the father--too many fathers do not realize how important they are in their daughters' lives, right from the beginning. The early part of this book did a good job in pointing that out. After those couple of chapters, however, it was all negatives and no advice for how to avoid them. I hoped for better from Dr. Dobson.

Bringing Up Girls Review
By L. Courtney
Several years ago I read Dr. Dobson's book Bringing Up Boys. As the mother of a boy and the wife of a man who used to be a boy, I was thrilled to learn what made them tick. So, I was very excited to have the chance to review Bringing Up Girls through the Tyndale Blag Network!

Dr. Dobson, in Bringing up Girls, first relates the physiological and psychological differences between boys and girls answering the question: What makes girls unique? Everything he writes is well backed up with current research. He goes on to talk about the importance of mothers and then fathers in a girl's life. He broaches some discussion of discipline. He looks at modesty and why this is such an issue with girls today. He sites research related to our current culture and technological trends that affect girls particularly. He attempts to give parents a better understanding of why their little girls (and big girls) are the way they are are and to equip parents to raise these girls to be the young women God wants them to be.

I was very impressed with Bringing Up Girls (as I was with Bringing up Boys). I find the physiological differences between boys and girls very interesting- especially as our culture has tried for so long to tell us boys and girls really aren't all that different. I think Dr. Dobson does an excellent job of bringing in a wide array of statistical research as well as writings form other learned people on the topic. He also provides real life interviews with girls and parents to give practical examples.

Dr. Dobson is very opinionated about such issues as stay-at-home moms, abstinence, and modesty. Some readers may not appreciate this "political incorrectness", but , as I happen to agree with most of what he says, I do appreciate his candidness. I also appreciate the fact that he is willing to be counter-cultural to address some of these important truths that parents need to know.

I will definitely recommend Bringing Up Girls and plan to pass my copy on to other moms who are raising these young woman of the future.

Eh
By Colleen Schwenger
I was very disappointed by this book. I really enjoyed "Bringing Up Boys" and found lots of insights and practical advice in it. "Bringing Up Girls", however, offered very little, if any, practical advice. I was hoping for insights on things like good vs. bad friendships, gossip, effective methods of disciplining girls, attitudes, and all I got out of the book was "make sure she has a good relationship with dad". We've already heard that from a hundred different sources. He even took it to a Freudian level, making a weird comment about dads being attracted to their developing daughters' bodies. That one point seemed to be repeated over...and over...and over...until I was ready to scream "OK! I get it, but what else should I do?!" It seems to focus entirely on the teen years and offers little help for moms of younger girls other than "encourage them to play princesses". I almost got the feeling he never met a real little girl. He seems to assume they are all sweetness and light until puberty and then they are going to cut themselves and have sex. I have a seven year old and I wanted to know how to handle bossiness and know-it-all attitudes and bad influences. Maybe the book was helpful to mothers of teens, but not to me.
I should ad here that I really like Dr. Dobson and his other books. I just can't believe he didn't have more to put in this one.

Churchless: Understanding Today's Unchurched and How to Connect with ThemFrom Barna, George (EDT)/ Kinnaman, David (EDT)

Churchless people are all around us: among our closest loved ones, at our workplaces, in our neighborhoods. And more and more, they are becoming the norm: The number of churchless adults in the US has grown by nearly one-third in the past decade. Yet the startling truth is that many of these people claim they are looking for a genuine, powerful encounter with God―but they just don’t find it in church. What are they (or we) missing? How can we better reach out to them? What can we say or do that would inspire them to want to join a community of faith? Containing groundbreaking new research from the Barna Group, and edited by bestselling authors George Barna (Revolution) and David Kinnaman (You Lost Me), Churchless reveals the results of a five-year study based on interviews with thousands of churchless men and women. Looking past the surface of church attendance to deeper spiritual realities, Churchless will help us understand those who choose not to be part of a church, build trust-based relationships with them, and be empowered to successfully invite them to engage.

Useful information regarding the current state of church attendance
By A. Looby
I received a free copy of the book from the publisher for the purpose of this review. No additional compensation has been received and I was not required to write a positive review.

Attempting to divine understanding of viewpoints and motivations from data is daunting task, particularly with a research topic regarding belief and corresponding church attendance. However, the Barna Group has done an outstanding job gleaning understanding from more than five years of research into American trends and beliefs regarding church attendance. General Editors George Barna and David Kinnaman have compiled and distilled a tremendous amount of data into useful information regarding the current state of church attendance, what is motivating thecurrent Millennial generation’s choices, and the efficacy of outreach tools.

This book is going to be found useful by churches who are sincerely seeking and understanding of the viewpoints and desires of a generation that increasingly views church attendance (and membership) as less important than preceding generations. Techniques using mass media (direct mailings, advertising attempts, etc.) are indicated as being bypassed completely. However, cross-generational connections through testimony leadership, acts of service, and meaningful community interactions through the church are demonstrated as more likely to generate positive interest. To this reviewer, the data supports that the core concepts of intentional discipleship, personal testimony and authentic Christian service as described in the Great Commission and throughout the New Testament are the most effective means of reaching the Millennial generation.

Some of the data presented in this collection may be disturbing for those readers comfortable in a “business as usual” mentality. According to the data, less than 50 percent of American adults are considered “actively churched.” However, closer examination of that statistic demonstrates that “actively churched” means attending a church at least one time per month. Many in church circles might dispute that definition as “active”. Likewise, the rising number of “dechurched” – now at 35 percent – should be alarming.

This reviewer gleans that churches should seriously consider their outreach efforts. Impersonal mass media is clearly declining as an effective means of outreach, but this may be a positive development. Churches need to return to their historic (and scripturally prescribed) mandate to personally make disciples through intentional teaching. As they do so, lovingly caring for their community through sincere and consistent service will speak more to Millennials than slick advertising and programs.

This book is ideal for church leadership – pastors, deacons, elders, teachers – or even small groups desiring to understand the perspectives of those whom they are attempting to reach with the Gospel.

What is the other guy thinking?
By Nichols Notes
Drive by the parking lot of many churches on Sunday morning and count the empty slots. Church attendance seems to be in decline, and many no longer consider church attendance a viable investment of time. Perhaps it is time we ask, “Why?”

In Churchless, George Barna and David Kinnaman give a look into the thoughts and practices of both the churched and unchurched. The book is stuffed with survey results, statistics, and charts but the data is presented in a digestible format. Don’t think boring lab report. Think useful answer book.

Who are the unchurched? What do they think? What are their goals? Why do they avoid church? How do they differ from the churched? Some may shy away from such pointed questions, but these authors do not. Barna and Kinnaman present the results of their multi-year conversations and interviews in an easy-to-read format.

Be prepared for some shockers. For example, Churchless tells readers a two-decade shift in attendance patterns now gives this definition of a churchgoer, “Today a regular churchgoer shows up for worship once every four to six weeks.”

As a service to readers the authors have provided a website where color copies of many of the charts may be downloaded for use in presentations. Additionally each chapter ends with a Forward Thinking section offering insightful questions to foster discussion.

I would recommend Churchless to anyone seeking an understanding of the trends around us. Pastors, elders, and church leadership teams may benefit from a study of the text followed by realistic conversation on what is working and not working in the organization’s outreach and ministry.

Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Barna and Kinnaman have done the research to ask the unchurched what appeals to them and what turns them off in organized religion. Is it time to adjust our methods? Read Churchless, and prayerfully consider the data.

We can’t see them as a ‘project’ – nobody wants to feel like the attention is out of some misguided sense of ...
By Karl Dumas
Gone are the days when almost everyone you know goes to church, and does so regularly. Gone are the days when the people who don’t go to church are probably going to Synagogue, or Temple or Mosque or some other faith based gathering. Gone are the days when you could tell who was Christian by observing church attendance. The rules of the game have changed, and the church needs to figure out fairly quickly how to deal with the new rules of engagement.
Churchless: Understanding Today’s Unchurched and How to Connect with Them, (Barna Group, George Barna and David Kinnaman, General Editors, Tyndale Momentum, 2014) is based on a series of recent surveys conducted by the Barna Group. The results are chilling.
While most churches think that they are the friendliest place in town and that they are the obvious choice for anyone, those that don’t regularly attend usually don’t see it the same way. And speaking of regular attendance, the new “regular’ isn’t 3 or 4 times a month plus special occasions. It’s closer to once a month.
The ‘millennials’ - people born in the 80’s and 90’s - might not have grown up going to church. They meet people with a lot of baggage concerning religion, and in this postmodern, post-Christian age, that’s to be expected.
A lot of people just don’t go to church; but there are a couple of other groups that we especially need to be concerned with. There are a lot of people who used to go to church, but got disenchanted and left. And there is another group of people who strongly profess their Christian faith, but don’t see the need to affiliate with organized religion. We can’t set out to evangelize them, they’re already saved. We can’t see them as a ‘project’ – nobody wants to feel like the attention is out of some misguided sense of pity.
So how do we reach them? Unfortunately, there isn’t a single one size fits all formula, so it has to start with relationships. As good as many church people are at relationships with other church people, when it comes to the dechurched, unchurched, and minimally churched, something breaks down.
Churchless offers insight, gained from talking to members of those groups, of where their interests lie, how they perceive church and religion, and where some of those ideas come from. There are also tips for making the connections between their faith work and a church family.
The writer of Hebrews warned the early Christians to not give up meeting together, the need for a faith community is equally strong today.
This book is not the kind of book you look for when you want to curl up in front of the fireplace, but pastors and church leadership teams owe it to themselves to look at the state of their church in the context of this book and use the lessons learned as they try to reach and rechurch their neighborhood.
I received a copy of this book from Tyndale Momentum in exchange for my review. I was not required to write a positive review.
