Grafting in science of the mind into the Bible.
By C
All this to be said, I think God can certainly use this book in someone's life, but there should be a deep knowledge of these Bible truths to balance out the affirmations/'you are in control' side to it that occur in this book:

I heard about this book as a recommendation, but there are many problems with it that cause it to be somewhat unbiblical. In the very first chapter, a number of false supposed truths exist-the primary one being 'I think therefore I am.' This is deceptive. The Bible says to come to God in repentance to then be changed by the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38, 2 Cor 3:18).

The Bible also says that God will give good things to those who ASK Him, not to those who think they are something when they are, in fact, not (Matt 7:11, Gal 6:3). This is the lie of 'affirmations'. The author tries to graft in the science of the brain into a book, but it has little to do with walking in the Spirit and God's commands in His Word.

This book encourages you to focus and visualize YOUR dreams and goals, not God's commands, in contrast to the great commission: Matt 28:19-20, and Ecclesiastes 12:13-14: to fear God and keep His commands.

The author also discourages "negative" attitudes such as anger, when there is a time "for everything under the sun" including hate, war, weeping, and morning (Ecc 3:1-8). Paul also praises God for the result of grief: 'As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.' (2 Cor 7:9) and Jesus was "a man acquainted with grief"(Isaiah 53:3).

In chapter 8, the author says "Do you see yourself as an awesome child of God?" when, in fact, we must realize we are sinners in need of a Savior first. Most people prefer to skip this part because it is uncomfortable, but this is needed to enter into God's kingdom. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23). A truth seemingly pushed aside in this book that we would instead be transformed BY our minds instead of being transformed by the renewing of your mind. (Rom 12:2). Something only God can do through prayer and reading His Word.

The author seems to think we are in control of our own destiny as he says in chapter 11 that gratitude draws happy people and circumstances. It is God who provides us opportunities, not our thoughts.

In chapter 14, Newberry says "The way you think can either multiply your talents and gifts or shrink them." When it is the God who multiplies our talents and gifts and distributes them according to His sovereign will (Matt 25:14-30, 1 Cor 12:4).

The book also says to let your words be kind to others, but doesn't mention the other reality that we must rebuke others if they are living in sin. See Romans 6:15-16.

After chapter 18, it gets into some "you" doctrine, so I will save your eyes in reading my words by summarizing what it says periodically: "live the life YOU really want", "YOU hold the power", "Visualize YOUR future", "God will reward YOU for your good actions", "Attach your thoughts to what YOU want". 1. We should not graft God into our lives, but be grafted into His plan for us, 2. God holds the power, 3. We don't know what our future will be, so we must trust God, 4. We don't deserve anything for our good actions (Isaiah 64:6).

James 4:13-15 summarizes this very well: "Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money." Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that."

Finally, the last thing I found in the first 30 chapters of this book is this sad sentence: "Choosing unhappiness takes you off God's plan for success." Our feelings do NOT change God's plan for us. Especially when there is a time to be sorrowful (Ecclesiastes 3:4).

Great devotional to today's teens
By Deena Peterson
The entire book is based on basically one verse, and one that is pivotal to living a joyful and abundant life. Directed toward teens, the readings are brief and to the point. For forty days the reader focuses on a particular concept, then follows up with several steps to live out what was just read.

Work it, is a brief activity,

Talk It is a group activity.

Stick It is a thought to carry throughout the day to meditate on, and then a brief prayer closes out the daily reading.

After forty days, a new way of thinking helps to transform the reader's life. The really cool thing is, since the book is brief, if you read through it three times you can cover an entire year with positive thinking based on Scripture--well, almost. My thanks to my friends at Tyndale Publishing for my sneak peek at "Think 4:8" in exchange for an honest review. This is a great tool to help a negative or discouraged mindset.

However, if you're really struggling with thoughts of sadness or depression, get the help you may need, and add the book to your regimen!

Good devotional for teens
By D. Kinney
It is hard to find a devotional for teens that is does not dummy down Biblical principles. This book is the right balance between the basic truths of Scripture yet with the deep meaning. It also challenges teens to live out their faith in a way that is meaningful yet still do-able.

The chapters are a quick read with enough depth to really challenge the teen reader. At the end of each chapter are hands-on activities for application of the truth. The author does not just tell the read what to do but gives the reader an opportunity to apply what is taught to real life.

Although I did not read The 4:8 Principle, I could easily apply the principles while reading this book.

Tyndale has provided me a free copy of this book in exchange for my review which I freely give.
