Heartwarming Read
By Mrs. Mary Liz Kehoe
Driftwood Tides was a 'hard to put down' book. Even with the demand of family and work, I devoured it in two days. The character development and plot challenges of the principal character kept me on the edge of my seat hoping all would turn out well for Holton and the truth would come out so that Libby would achieve the peace she needed to get on with life and Rob. It was refreshing that the word of God was present here in a traditional manner. Thanks, Gina for your craft....keep up the good work!

Strong and emotional story!
By Marian Baay
At the lowest ebb in his life, driftwood artist Holton Creary is a full blown alcoholic. He started his drinking journey on the day that his wife died in a car crash. Adele was everything to him and he just couldn’t bear the idea that he was the cause of her death—or so he believed. Not having paid his mortgage and bills, and spending all the money he earns on gin, he is in big financial trouble. Foreclosure is around the corner and he is about to lose his property at the beach that Adele and he loved so much.

Shortly before she’s hoping to get married, Libby Slater finds out that her mother is not her biological mother. Suddenly many things seem to make sense to Libby; like why her mother has never been “mother-material”. Her father left when she was only four and now she understands why he could walk away from her so easily—she was not his biological daughter.

Having received the adoption papers from her mother, Libby decides she wants to find her birth mother. She has so many questions to ask. Her quest leads her to Holton’s door step. Their first meeting is not a pleasant one as Holton is completely drunk. In Holton’s house, Libby finds a picture of Adele and she sees the resemblance with herself. Her hope for answers shatters when she learns of her death. Not wanting to tell Holton right away that he is her step-father, she makes up a story that she is looking for an internship and that Adele had promised her the position when she was still alive. Reluctantly, Holton agrees and offers her the position for the summer. Libby hopes to learn more about her mother during the summer months, but she was not prepared for everything she was about to see and learn during her so-called internship.

Fantastic storyline! I was sucked into the lives of Libby and Holton and the people around them, and had a hard time putting the book down. There were smiles and tears in this emotional tale that deals with real issues; like alcoholism, grief and acceptance. At times my heart ached for all that the characters had to endure – but beauty, hope and faith always shone through.
Between the lines I learned about the driftwood art—something I had never heard about and I found it very fascinating to ‘see’ Holton create his art. A compelling story that follows the lives of well developed characters with real emotions, this is a recommended read!

Love found in many ways
By Carol L. Hoefs
Gina Holmes has a way with her stories that make you feel like you are part of the story. Driftwood Tides is about is a story that will touch your heart. Holton is loosing himself in drinking blaming himself for his wife's death five years before and the guilt drove him to drink. Libby is a young lady who finds out through a medical test before she is getting married that she is not her parents child. Her mother hands her adoption papers and Libby goes looking for her biological mother. When she thinks she has found her, she finds out she was killed 5 years before. She finds her biological mother's husband and life takes her on a wonderful life changing adventure discovering who her mother was and then finding out who her biological father I.
Once I started reading the book I did not want to put it down.

About the Author
Francine Rivers began her literary career at the University of Nevada, Reno, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and journalism. From 1976 to 1985, she had a successful writing career in the general market, and her books were highly acclaimed by readers and reviewers. Although raised in a religious home, Francine did not truly encounter Christ until later in life, when she was already a wife, a mother of three, and an established romance novelist.

Francine and her husband, Rick, live in Northern California and enjoy the time spent with their three grown children and every opportunity to spoil their grandchildren.

From AudioFile
Liz Higgs portrays Dynah Careys struggle with rape and her difficult decision to abort the resulting pregnancy, a decision that profoundly affects her relationship with her family. With her versatile vocal range, Higgs depicts Dynahs feelings of victimization, which challenge her rock-solid faith. She depicts Dynahs sense of betrayal--first, by her fianc, and then by her college dean, who tells her to leave to protect her fiancs reputation. Detailed characterization gives the sense of multiple narrators. Higgss portrayal of Dynahs rising anxiety as she waits for God to provide answers is especially believable. Higgs empathy and sensitivity animate the entire reading. G.D.W. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

A difficult issue handled with delicacy
By Gemma
I can only imagine what a difficult book this was to write! This is such a heart-wrenching issue, and is a favorite argument of pro-choicers. Though I knew how it would have to end, I couldn't stop reading to find out just how this would be accomplished. I found myself crying over Dynah's pain. I could just feel so much sympathy for her. The issue was dealt with very well. It wasn't graphic, but it didn't back off from the message either. Praise to Francine Rivers for have the courage to write about such a difficult issue.

If you enjoyed this, you will probably also enjoy Redeeming Love by the same author. Ms Rivers is wonderful at handling difficult issues, and while her books are "grittier" than most Christian fiction, I think it was necessary, in keeping with the tone of her books. I am not even a very big fan of Christian fiction, but I will read anything written by Francine Rivers.

Shows The Awesome power of the Lord's love and care
By A Customer
I love to read and have read The Atonement Child twice. It's one of the most profoundly touching yet wrenching stories,I've ever read. The character development is beautiful, and Dynah is such a real and beautiful character. I love the way it highlights God's incrdible love and care. It also brings you inside the hearts of the more undesireable characters, making them real people instead of "bad-guy" monsters. No review I could write can do justice in describing this book, but I highly reccomend it as a simply incredible, healing story. Also gripping and entertaining. One of my favorite books of all time.

A Life of Faith...That Includes Mistakes
By Daniel Greegor
He is the "father of a great nation", the man through whom "all the nations of the earth will be blessed." He is father of Isaac, the grandfather of Jacob, and through his line comes David, Solomon, Daniel, John the Baptist, and Jesus Christ.

Yet, there is much that can be overlooked about Abraham by just casually reading his story in Genesis. Charles Swindoll was written a wonderful book giving insight into who Abraham might have been and why he may have done what he did.

By using historical information about the time in which Abraham lived, such as customs and beliefs, Swindoll has allowed the reader a better view of Abraham.

I found this very helpful as I often was perplexed by some of the decisions Abraham made. Seeing now that is was the custom of the time really enlightened my understanding of certain passages in Scripture.

I also enjoyed how Swindoll showed Abraham as he was: a man. He was a man that made mistakes, had doubts, and suffered because of his errors. Yet, God still used him in a marvelous way. Such encouragement is readily accpeted that if Abraham can be used by God with his faults, so can I.

I learned a lot!
By J4Life5
This is the most in depth book I've ever read about the life of Abraham. We can read through his story in the Bible and understand the change of his name from Abram to Abraham. We can think about how strange it might be to hear that your descendants will be as numerous as the stars in the sky when your wife is well past child-bearing years and you have no children. We can even draw on our own experiences of stepping out in faith and imagine how Abram might have felt in following God's will. However, what Swindoll does so well in this book is to bring all of those events alive for readers.

When reading this book, readers get a clearer picture of the culture that Abram lived in and why his packing up and leaving his land was such a leap of faith. I loved the way that Swindoll described what that experience might look like for us. I really enjoy books that make the people and stories in the Bible more alive for me and this book definitely does that. I also really enjoyed the chapter on prayer and Swindoll's discussion about unconfessed sin and how it might impact your prayer life.

The only crticism I would have about the book is the cover. I read this book as part of the Tyndale Summer Reading program and saw only the thumbnail image of the cover on the reading list and on Net Galley. I did not see the subtitle and did not get a clear look at the picture on the cover. I make it a habit of not reading descriptions of books because I find that the descriptions sometimes give away too much of the book. With all that said, I started reading this book under the mistaken assumption that it was about Abraham Lincoln! For some reason, the thumbnail of the cover looked like Lincoln to me and I was all geared up to learn about the faith of Abraham Lincoln. So I started reading and Swindoll was talking about Abraham and I kept waiting for him to draw comparisons to Lincoln! My mistake is not a reflection of the quality of the book, I just had to share my funny story. I might have to decide to read descriptions, at least on non-fiction books.

This is a great book that is very well-written. If you are interested in learning more about the life of Abraham to draw closer to the Lord, this is the book for you.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

A Deep Look Into The Biblical Account of Abraham
By Jill H.
"Abraham" is a book about the nomad Abraham’s life from the Bible. From his journey to another place he wasn’t familiar with, his relationship with his wife Sarah, his sons, and most importantly his relationship with G-d, the surface of the Biblical account of Abraham is cracked and a deep surface is revealed. It is shown through this book that Abraham was tested a lot to see if his faith in G-d was operating, and just how strong it was. Abraham came from a different and often immoral lifestyle that was so different than the way the new foreigners around him were living. It uncovers how G-d spent time working in his heart to be more faithful.

"Abraham" went deep into the story of Abraham for me, and showed me that G-d will work with us until we get his will for our lives right, as long as we are willing to try again, or keep moving. Many times I thought that G-d was highlighting things he wanted me to see as important, and telling me to reread some of them by the author prompting that.

One thing I thought could be discouraging to some people in the book (and the only thing that I had a hard time with in the book) is when it was explained that people who don’t have wonderful families are not going to end up as good marriage partners in their lives. The author explained he has seen wonderfully healthy people come from terrible families, but they are rare (page 231). I do not believe that to always be true, especially if people are really grounded in Jesus (Yeshua) and working very hard to live a G-dly lifestyle.

This book was an encouragement for me to stay faithful to G-d when tests are being put in my life, and to try again when I fail a faith test. If G-d can call Abraham from the kind of lifestyle that he was a part of and lead him to him, he can turn many more lives around to find his will for their lives as well.

My review = 4.5 out of 5 stars

Play....in all of life. What fun!
By Catherine N. Davis
I clearly remember the day after I had decided to follow Jesus. My mom said no one could erase the smile on my face. The joy that I felt was palpable and contagious. It was the joy of just enjoying God. In his latest work, “The Well-Played Life: Why Pleasing God Doesn’t Have to be Such Hard Work,” Len Sweet delves into how faith and pleasing God should be encompassed in play and joy.

Sweet points out that somewhere along the way, humanity forgot how to play – or at least relegated it to the life of a child. Life became about pursuing a 5-year plan rather than an eternal Promise; following rules and regulations rather than chasing relationships; avoiding learning from mistakes to striving to never make a mistake at all. We have been so focused on successfully knowing/following God’s ‘plan’ for our lives (and in our churches) that we have forgotten how to enjoy God in every aspect of life.

This book is a refreshing look at an ethic of play in the life of a child of God. Sweet does an excellent job of explaining how play was never meant only for children and that no matter one’s age, playing in God’s playground will bring Divine joy and fulfillment. In an age where faith seems often superficial, Sweet goes deep into the roots of spiritual growth and discipleship.

An excellent resource for small group discussion, for sermon ideas, as well as for the reader who realizes that something is missing in their life with God, this book contains a lot to play with.

Moving from "working on faith" to Godplay
By Henry Stewart
“The Well-Played Life” – with a title like this, would you expect it to be a paradigm shifter? In his new book, Len Sweet challenges us to abandon our Christian faith as hard work. The book’s subtitle, “Why Pleasing God Doesn’t Have to Be Such Hard Work,” reminds us that five hundred years of the Protestant work ethic seduced us into the false belief that we must work hard at our faith to avoid being poor disciples and disappointments to God. Sweet calls us to move from the long-faced and sour “working on faith” to the joyous “Godplay” of praising, worshiping, relating, and living incarnationally with Christ.

The book divides our life’s journey into three ages of play.

1. First Age (0-30 years). During this time we are “Novice Players,” explore our world, “trying and tinkering” learning how we fit within life. We learn how to live a life of play with God and follow the story that is God.

2. Second Age (30-60 years). This is a time for being “Real Players.” We continue to practice, “maturing, anointing, and commissioning.” (139) Playing with God means moving from the small sandbox of the First Age to a much larger sandbox.

3. Third Age (60-90+ years). Now a person becomes a “Master Player and Game Changer.” By this time a disciple is mature but not ossified, appreciative of traditions without being wedded (or welded) to them, willing to impart a legacy while supportive of other’s faith journeys. A disciple has more time for Godplay than in earlier ages. Forget the planning, expect anything, and trust the Holy Spirit.

These ages and the progressions do not occur linearly. God is not looking over our shoulder to make sure we work hard to stay on a precisely straight path ready to zap us into terrifying fire-filled pits on each side. “God didn’t give us a plan, but a purpose; not a map, but a mission, not a blueprint, but a blue sky for exploring.” (86) Like the neighborhood wanderings of Billy in Bill Keane’s “Family Circus” comic strip, we Godplay while we travel, knowing that Christ directs us along the way and delights in our side excursions of discovery, faith and relationships.

I found the book very helpful since I am transitioning from the Second Age into the Third Age. It helped me focus on deciding what items from of the Second Age are worthwhile Godplay and what I should abandon. It helped confirm that I should drop many Church-based “work” activities and replace them by relational interactions with people.

If you are transitioning, burned-out, or unsure about what isn’t right in your faith life, read the book. Heeding its advice keeps us from the hollow faith of do-nothing static piety or constant meaningless busyness. Rearrange your activities to allow more Godplay, or approach your current activities differently to move you away from “work” into Godplay.

Note: I received a free advance copy of this book in return for writing a review. The review solely reflects my own opinion.

Good news for those tired of the Christian rat race
By N. Howard
In "The Well Played Life", Leonard Sweet admits to his own workaholic tendencies. Of course, the is not alone. It seems like the Christian landscape (and, I have to admit, my own life) is littered with markers of lives lived in haste and busyness. Yet, as Sweet points out, this Protestant work ethic we have so diligently adopted, has not made us better disciples, just weary and cranky human beings. His answer? Play!

The book is divided into four sections, three of which are "Ages" of play. The first section is a plea to understand that play is not just for children. It is an approach to life which lends playfulness and a sense of adventure to even the most challenging of times. In one chapter in this section, entitled "Cave Dwellers", Sweet begins with the story of Nelson Mandela, who was imprisoned in a "cave" on Robben Island. Clearly, Sweet is not just interested in whimsy and games, but on an approach to life which sustains us and enriches life, in the midst of good and bad times.

The remaining three sections, all centered around chronological ages, pursue questions which are both the filter for a person living in that stage of life and, to some degree, must be answered during that "age". For Sweet, the typical answers to those question, couched in terms related to work and upward mobility, pale in comparison to the metaphor of play. For someone who is in the later half of the Second Age (30-60), my heart resonated with Sweet's conclusion that "The key to the pleasures of the Second Age is knowing when "giving it up" is good and when "giving it up" is bad." Some things we need to lay down and let go. Others we need to pursue with renewed passion.

Ultimately, "The Well-Played Life" is a book of spiritual direction rooted in the love of God for His.... children. How refreshing.

Great for teens and sports fans
By J. Kennel
Just read this book today and wanted to quickly share a "two thumbs up." This is the inspiring true story of Drew Brees' life, including being injured and having a comeback in professional football. Not to reveal the whole story, it is inspiring and involves a lot of courage and stamina on Brees' part as he faces challenges throughout his life, including a lengthy physical rehabilitation. The book is current and tells of the ups and downs, laughter and tears, victories and defeats of his life. Very interesting read for sports fans, and terrific read for teens whether they follow him or not. I have a couple of teen boys in mind who will love receiving this for a gift. I know teens aren't always keen on reading about adversity, but it's a great reality check and good book for conversations over dinner or a campfire.

If you want to read about a positive example, role model, mentor, or hero for young men today, Drew Brees is a great one!

one quick correction: the audio version is read by Chris Fabry and would be terrific for a car trip/vacation)

A Real Treasure!
By Amazon Customer
This is an enlightening well-written book for anyone! One lives through some days of adversity with Drew from a high school injury, college, draft, and the San Diego injury. These moments all played a role in preparing for his opportunity to play for the Saints. I began to see how his attitude, focus, preparation and team spirit has brought him to where he is today. I've been drawn to Brittany as I've seen her on television and was happy to see how much credit she is given as part of this story of success. This is definitely a very special family! Some incidents were quite amusing when the "idiot quarterback" at Purdue meets Brittany and his first thought is "I'm going to marry her" and she won't even talk to him and for good reason as Drew freely admits. I laughed out loud when Drew six months later is trying to get acquainted with Brittany and offered to drive her home in her car with a stick shift. Also special were Drew and his brother Reid as kids, the birth and naming of Baylen, and the weeks in the New Orleans home with a mattress on the floor and two camping chairs to sit in at night. We've all taken a turn at "camping in" in an empty home but it was just surprizing to see one additional revelation I could strongly identify with in the book. Finally reading about their Foundation and the enormous accomplishments to help others - children with cancer, schools and parks in New Orleans, Purdue Sports and the other ways Drew has helped in the community and supported our military. Adversity knocks on everyone's door and Drew offers some great advice on how to get yourself through it.

Excellent book by an excellent person
By BoilerUp915
What an incredible book. I have been a Drew Brees fan since he first stepped foot on the field for Purdue. This is an incredibly well-written and well-detailed account of the different points of adversity he has had to overcome in his life. I've met Drew a few times, and let me tell you, he is just about the nicest and most personable man in such a high position that you could ever meet. He has a chapter in the book titled "A Few Good Men" and in the chapter he explains how one day at church as a teenager he was listening to a pastor talking about how God wants 'a few good men' to "carry on his teachings and walk the walk with Christ." I can honestly say that Drew is certainly one of "A Few Good Men", not only in athletics but in the world today. The book is a must-have, whether you are a sports fan or not.

Oh, and I got my copy autographed today at his book signing at Purdue in West Lafayette, Indiana. :D

Drew, you're the best!

Prototype: What Happens When You Discover You're More Like Jesus Than You Think?, by Jonathan Martin

Jesus is God and we are not. Most of us get that. But what we don’t always understand is that God loves us just as much as He does His son. Many times in the Old Testament, God refers to human beings as His “beloved.” But when God called Jesus His beloved, Jesus did something truly remarkable: He believed Him. He lived every moment of His life fully convinced of His identity. And unlike every other person in history . . . He never forgot.

In Prototype, Jonathan Martin creates a vivid understanding of what it means to be beloved by God. To completely trust, as Jesus did, that God loves you. To live life without fear, confident in your identity and purpose. To handle life’s wounds as Jesus did, and to wake every day with a deep awareness of God’s presence.

Martin reveals a startling truth at the heart of the gospel: Jesus is our prototype. And as we discover how the knowledge of being God’s beloved changed everything for Jesus―how it set Him free to live out his purpose and love God, others, and the world―it will begin to do the same for us.

Engaging, yet profound work...
By Pastor Mark
In my experience as a pastor and Christian leader, it is extremely rare to come across a book that combines substantial theological content with imminent readability. The quest to find "meaty" books that I can recommend to a broad audience (who will actually read them!) has been exceptionally frustrating. In Prototype, I have found such a book!

One example of this "balance" would be Jonathan's treatment of the subject of sin. By identifying fear as the heart of all "sin and disaffection" the author is then able to unpack the gritty implications of such a thought with shocking ease and clarity. What gripped me was Jonathan's perspective - he was able to connect the reality of fear with the concept of "personal responsibility." Again, this is not a superficial treatment of the subject, this is significant hermeneutical work in a digestible package.

The other example of this sort of work is Jonathan's much-needed exposé of the Gnosticism that is rampant in the American church, or as he calls it, "the scandal of a bodily Gospel." (ch. 7) As I read his exposition of the topic, I couldn't help but think of N.T. Wright (and that is meant to be the highest compliment!), and how Jonathan's work is raising critical conversations that far too often are left to the "theologians."

In the end, I felt like Prototype was a highly accessible cousin to Dallas Willard's Divine Conspiracy. That book changed my life and this one will hopefully reach an even broader audience.

This book is God whispering to my heart.
By @micahjmurray
[...]

"I believe that somewhere, somehow, you've heard the music. Distant or close, you've heard the song of your belovedness. It's a song of unrestrained joy, a song of hope and belonging. A song that calls you into the future. Can you even imagine what it would be like to dance the dance of children, the dance before innocence was lost?" - Prototype

I can't remember now where I first heard of Jonathan Martin.

Looking back, it seems as if he's always been there. Like Jesus, or Will Smith.

All I know is that sometime last summer, I stumbled across him on Twitter: @RenovatusPastor - this tall, Pentecostal(?) preacher with Inigo Montoya hair, who kept dropping truth bombs as if there was no tomorrow. Everything he said landed in my heart and exploded with reverberating thunder. It was the Gospel I had always known, but spoken in a way that made it seem a bit more alive, a bit more expansive, a bit more exciting every time I thought about it.

Above the post-apocalyptic landscape of the religious blogosphere, Renovatus Pastor rose as a beacon of beauty and hope, inviting us all to follow him toward Jesus. (He might cringe at this grandiose description, but if you've read his stuff I know you'll agree with me.)

So you can imagine that I was pretty excited to get my hands on a copy of his book. No longer would I have to scroll through my Twitter feed to find his truth bombs - they were all available in convenient book form for less than $15. When Prototype finally showed up in my mailbox yesterday, I started reading almost immediately. With excitement and tired eyes, I flew through the pages - underlining and circling and Tweeting and scrawling "THIS!" and "LOLZ" in the margins. I think I may have even drawn a few smiley faces, but I'm not sure. It's all rather a blur.

Really, Prototype is like a sermon.

Not a boring, doodle-on-the-bulletin, fall-asleep-in-church sermon. It's the kind of sermon where it feels like he's preaching straight to your heart, weaving stories and truth together seamlessly. The kind of sermon where you lose track of time.

I have to admit, I came into Prototype with pretty high expectations (what with Jonathan Martin being like Will Smith and all). The first chapter or two, while solid, didn't amaze me. There were a lot of paragraphs of "What if..." questions, a phrase that's become worn with overuse in Christian writing.

But I kept reading. And like a beautiful sermon, or a song, Prototype soon found a rhythm. I started turning the pages faster. On occasion I nearly stood up and shouted "Amen", as if my living room was suddenly an old-timey revival tent. By the end, when the preacher began the invitation, I wanted to be the first out of my seat and up the aisle. It's a simple invitation but it tugs at my heart as he repeats it over and over on the last pages of the book - whispering at first, but then shouting (as a good preacher does):

"Come up here... Come up here... Come up here... Can you see that's where the music's been headed all along?"

I'm terrible at reviewing books. I have no idea what I'm doing. I know that if I say "This is the best book ever! Everyone should read it!" that will probably make you less likely to read it. Probably the best thing I can do is let the book speak for itself. Look at this. How could you not want to read a book like this?

"This book is not about finding religion. It's not a self-help manual. I don't have seven habits or twelve steps to take you anywhere. This is about becoming awake to God. And if we become awake to God, we become awake to everything and everyone around us."

A few highlights: The story about the boy on the bike. This is where it starts. The chapters about "Sacrament" and "Community". They're so full of big ideas about how we relate to God and each other, they both deserve their own books. The reference to "Doubting Thomas" and "Wedgie Martin". That was the first time I wrote "LOLZ" in the margin. Also, the story about finding God at the beach. As a guy who has often found God at the beach, it was all I could do to not take off right then, running toward the East Coast. (I wouldn't have gotten very far.)

Jonathan Martin is a smart guy, with degrees from Pentecostal Theological Seminary and Duke University Divinity School. There's a lot of theology in this book, but it doesn't feel like "theology". It feels like a friend talking to you over coffee, about the God he knows and loves. It's tangled up with true stories, from Jonathan's life, from his community, from Renovatus Church. I've known a lot of theology that made God seem far away and abstract, hidden behind big words and complex theories. But Prototype is about a God who is near, whispering love to you, inviting you to resurrection.

From the beginning to the end, much of what Jonathan Martin wrote resonated with the things God has been whispering to my heart recently. About freedom. About a God who bleeds. About my identity as Beloved. Reading it today, I felt like I wasn't alone.

I think I'll be sitting with this book for a while. Join me?

Passion for Christ Evident
By Mathew Sims
The saying goes, "Don't judge a book by its cover," but I quite disagree. I nearly always judge a book by its cover. In fact, what drew me to Jonathan Martin's Prototype was its cover art and title. Prototype: What Happens When You Discover You're More Like Jesus Than You Think? Making Jesus central is huge and Jonathan seeks to do this. "Jesus really is the prototype for a whole new way of being human" (p. 98).

What I loved. The gospel will stalk (p. 29) you through out. Jonathan talks about Jesus and talks about him more. He talks about creation, the fall ("The world . . . turns into a George Romero film" p. 120), the cross, the resurrection, and the eschatological hope to come (pp. 156-58, 197). His passion for Jesus grabs you as you read. His primary thrust relates to understanding what Christ's insertion into the gospel story provides for us--belovedness by God in Christ. That fundamentally changes how we live. "I am both more loved and more broken than you could possibly know" (p. 64).

Also and surprisingly much of his church experience resonates with my own church experience. I say surprisingly because I was raised an independent fundamentalists and he was raised a charismatic. Charismatics are bad, bad, bad in the world I was raised. But we shared an eschatolgical common ground. The fear inducing spectacle of the pretribulation rapture (p. 171) in my church upbringing effected my spiritual growth and he shares his experience with per-trib propaganda growing up (this wasn't your John MacArthur's dispensationalism). Also, he talks about many of his revival experiences and his depiction of evangelists fits what I'm familiar with. It's interesting how our experiences within divergent groups of Christianity overlap.

That also brings me to my concern. Obviously as a Presbyterian I disagree with charismatic theology (i.e., speaking in tongues [angelic language], ecstatic behavior, etc). That's obvious but I'm always glad to learn from other christians. What I kept waiting/wanting Jonathan to put out of the park (or least make explicit) is "Where does the revelation of identity come from?" (pp. 11, 31, 68). His controlling metaphor through out was of his experience riding a bike and feeling loved by God as a boy. I've had strong feelings of being loved by God. We're on the same page there, but what ultimately anchors that feeling rests in Christ whose fully revealed in Scripture. The emphasis appears more subjective in Prototype.

Last, I appreciated his focus on liturgy (even where we disagre i.e., foot washing as sacrament) and the necessity of connectedness with the past Church. Jonathan says, "The desire to cut ourselves off from those who came before us is no virtue" (p. 191). An interesting side note, he says following this, "There is not such thing as cutting ourselves off and starting over. (Even the Protestant Reformation didn't truly succeed in that)" (p. 192). I would humbly submit that he might have missed the point of the Reformation. In fact, the Reformers would give a big hearty "Amen!" to the necessity of connectedness with the past. They vehemently sought to demonstrate their theology wasn't novel but had its root in the early fathers, the Apostles, and Jesus gospel. The point wasn't cutting off but reforming. Hence the Reformation motto: "Always Reforming."

I enjoyed reading Prototype. Jonathan has a knack for words and the prose goes down smooth. His metaphors pop and he has a talent for turning a phrase beautifully. Simply put: He will engage you with his words and will encourage you to love and know Jesus more.

Something for you to share with your daughter
By D. Kinney
I was excited when I saw this 1-year devotional to share with my daughter. It is definitely for a tween girl and her mom; however some of the content may be too juvenile for a girl who is 10-12 years old. While other content seemed too mature for an 8-9 year old depending on their life experience. For example, on August 21st, the devotion is about beauty and how pictures in magazines are airbrushed and enhanced. I do not have fashion magazines in my house or allow my daughter to look at such publications. So this day, I would probably skip the devotion. On another day (February 16), the lesson is on how God will take care of us like a cat who had kittens. The last line says, "Little lamb, don't be afraid. He's carrying you close to his heart."

So I guess it is hit or miss if this devotional is good for you and your daughter. I am just glad that there is something like this for mothers and daughters to share.

The book provides a 1 page devotion for each day of the year. This makes it non-threatening as my daughter and I can pick it up and read a day but not be lost if we miss a day or two. Life gets busy and we do not need more things on our to-do list. Instead, this devotion encourages us to be, not do, more.

To comply with new regulations introduced by the Federal Trade Commission, I must post that Tyndale has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book to review. I also must say that the opinions are all mine.

A little too contemporary for me
By lovemygirls
Although I want to relate with my preteen daughter, I also would like her to learn to communicate with others like a mature adult. When this book refers to people in the Bible as "dudes," and uses other unnecessary slang terms, I feel as if it is dumbing down devotion time a little too much for me. I think I will keep looking for a girls devotional that does not try quite so hard to be "hip."

Not thrilled, but useful for multiple ages
By Amazon Customer
Like most resources, Christian, bible-based, or not, a parent really has to use what parts work and tailor what doesn't for their own children. This title is no different. I am using this at bedtime with three daughters, 4, 7, and 10. They (and I) enjoy the special time we have tried to commit to sharing every evening and I hope they're falling asleep with truth from scripture rolling around in their minds and sinking into their hearts.

I've had to edit a bit as I read several pages, just to make it applicable to my girls and to be sure I'm speaking truth as discerned in my spirit. There are also some suggestions in the gab sections that we couldn't use because I felt they were not appropriate.

The most recent example I remember was to watch the movie "Faith Like Potatoes" together. If you've seen the movie, you know the scene that will leave even adults wishing there were a delete button in our brains for images we wish had never had the chance to enter because they are so powerful... and not in a good way. Because the author doesn't give any hint of caution, and it seems a safe and inspiring family movie, I never would have looked up reviews on that one. But years later I honestly don't remember anything about it except the horrific accident portrayed. Why they chose to make that bit so graphic is baffling to me... but this isn't a review of "Faith Like Potatoes," is it?

I do think this is a decent book, and will continue to share it with my daughters since it offers many ideas for sharing our hearts and teaching. However, I know I'll also need to keep alert for my daughters' sake.
