Best NLT

This is the best NLT Bible out there... depending on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a pocket sized Bible, this will not fit in your pocket. It's too long and wide. But, if you are looking for an NLT Bible that is excellent for reading and even studying the Word, this is it.

The NLT translation makes studying the word a little more difficult than an ESV, NASB or NIV because it is a dynamic translation (translating thought-for-thought instead of word-for-word). This leaves some room for differences as some people would translate some thoughts differently than others. But that happens in word-for-word translations too because not everyone would translate each word exactly the same, and sometimes translating word for word will be less accurate (e.g., "tore my robes" actually means in our language "I was greatly distressed"). The NLT is translated by reputable scholars who see the Bible as God's Word and can be trusted in that regard.

With that aside, I would say if you want to study the Bible from the NLT, this is the best version (Note: the "NLT Study Bible" is great for studying too, but it is just too enormous to carry around).

The size of the font in this Bible is just right (not too small, not too big). The references along the inside are amazing (not totally random referencing you to words like "an"). The texture of the cover feels smooth and sturdy.

Lastly, I love how this Bible just stays open on whatever page you're on. It's kind of a floppy bible, but floppy in a good way. It doesn't feel flimsy and yet not stiff. I mention that because sometimes bibles feel so stiff, and when you place them open on your desk, it just closes on you. This Bible stays open.

Pros: excellent reference notes, very light, stays open
Cons: depends on what you're looking for, but for me personally, none.

Simply awesome the NLT's

I am writing this review to help those searching for "which" NLT to buy. Regarding these Premiums, there are various editions available, even a calfskin (2004 edition) and a new calfskin (2007 revision) just came out. Even more, there is a huge quantity of other NLT Bible editions out there, with their various purposes: Study Bibles, reference, large prints, compacts, and so many of these are still available from the first edition, to the 2004, and the 2007 editions. It is a challenge at best to find the one...for there are so many delightful editions out there!!!
Currently, I am wandering in the valley of trying to decide if I like the first edition better than the last! There are so many hidden treasures and things to like about them. I caution you to be careful about ordering because of the ISBN's. Some carry the same ISBN for updates or previous editions. But if you will look around, you will find a vast array of NLT's so I can really understand these complications.
Also, please notice that this term "large" can mean different things to the various choices you have with the NLT. They have a new Large compact with reference, where the large is actually pretty small, but in the scale of compact, it is meant to be readable. This edition of the Premium, the large is what I would call a medium large. But their giant current editions are very true to their description. Even more the footnotes which are very important to this Bible, is also very nice and large for being footnotes.
There is a place on line where you can see a large document showing the updates from the 2004 to the 2007. But I saw back in the days of the 2004 that there were actually two different versions to that edition, which I think was some kind of publishing issue, just guessing. But the 2007 edition kind of reflects one of those 2004 editions in a big way, so they are almost the same, but the older 2004 seems to be a bit different, yet not at all like the first edition.
The first edition was an update of the Living Bible, and I remember reading some of the ads for it. What is so amazing is that lately I have been appreciating this edition more than when it first came out.
All in all, I believe that if one just simply appreciates them for what they are and what they were made for, I think you will love them too.
There is an amazing peace to reading these. It feels great to just enjoy them and experience the easy to understand words of Paul, for example, which just seems like a chore in other versions. As for me, I love Bibles that exalt Jesus. Any verses that demote Jesus make me leery of some of the newer translations and what do they mean by them. I find that these Bibles truly mean for the good.
I've come a long way with these modern translations. Sometimes I would really have issues with some Bibles for various reasons, but now I am seeing that a lot of Bibles are simply fussing over the same verses that every one else is, and they alternate with every new revision and so forth. But just appreciate them and you will be blessed. Let the Holy Spirit lead you. God bless you all in Jesus' Name.

Not as expected but I like it

The Bible was listed as being leather bound...when it arrived it was only "leather like"...but in spite of that difference, I am happy with it and enjoy using it. The print is a nice size and easily read. It is not a Bible I would use for deep study, but is perfect for reading aloud or just pleasureable reading.

Uplifting every day of the year

As soon as I got this little book I was in admiration with the texture of the cover and the embedded flying birds in it. I love it when publishers do something special with a book that can be carried everyday in your purse. Because this book is a definite gem to have handy EVERYWHERE you go. It is packed with prayers to uplift you every day and you can go back to your readings at any time of the day and reflect more on the scripture that is suggested for that day.

What is also nice about this book is that it doesn't begin with January 1st and can be started anytime during the year. Some days you will have a full page to read while other days you will get only half a page. The book covers issues from healing to family. Everything you can think off will be covered with a prayer.

The day start with a title and a reason why you could pray that. Right from the beginning the author don't waste time and starts the prayer. Somehow, without realizing it, it can easily fit into your life and what you are experiencing. To conclude, you can read the Scripture at the bottom of the page and reflect, journal and ponder on how it can be applied in your life.

I am enjoying this little book quite a bit and it can be found closely with my journal and my Bible. Being an homeschool mom I know I need to spend time to do my devotions and I usually do it early in the morning in the living room. The kids can see me daily going to read there and learn from me at the same time. So far, I have two kids independent enough to read their Bible on a daily basis. I look forward to have all four of them taking the time in the morning to spend time with God!

I would recommend this book to every women no matter where they are at in their walk in life. It can be a great tool to reflect on God's Word and grow spiritually and prayerfully as well.

I got it for my wife. We carpool to work and she will read it everyday on our way to work. We will share our thought toward the reading. It is small enough to have it with you.

I was looking for a daily prayer guide and this one works well. I find the content interesting and some of the prayers I mark to return to at a time when I need a prayer for a specific reason.

Vast Resource Tool

I've been wanting one of these for years. It's everything I figured it would be and more. What a vast resource for aspiring writers! It contains pretty much everything from what publishers expect and demand for manuscript submission to workshops writer's can attend to improve their craft. Sections under publishers highlight Scripture version preferred, statement of purpose, annual submissions received, average 1st printing facts, how many words are desired in manuscripts, how many new authors are accepted per year, and how payment works. Also listed are miscellaneous notes such as, "Looking for unique voices and settings others shy away from."

Periodical information includes website information, circulation information, subscription information, how much accepted writing is freelance or assigned, payment information, desired number of words, kill fees, Bible versions preferred, submission guidelines, columns and departments, and tips, such as "Be able to tell a good story , with drama, suspense, description, and dialog. The point of the story should be some practical spiritual help hat subjects learned through their experience. . . " If abbreviations or keys are used, they are clearly defined and a glossary exists at the end of the volume that helps explain terms found within the resource section.

This Market Guide is not hard to navigate at all. A simple hour of familiarizing one self with it and from that point on, facts can be easily accessed and referenced.

My only disappointment with this Market Guide is the fact it does not contain a freelance section (beyond the periodicals). This is an ever-growing market with many dead-ends and it would be wonderful to have a credible resource to point writers in the right direction as they attempt to build that area of their writing expertise. For example, who hires for website content? To help build religious blogs? Although some freelance areas are addressed in Specialty Markets, not all were and it would be beneficial to have that included in the next version of this book.

My other thought is that this information presented changes quickly in the writing world, so it would not be worth purchasing this book until a writer is currently ready to launch out. To purchase it before having a manuscript to present wouldn't be a total waste of money because the writer can get a feel for what publishers are looking for, but by the time the manuscript is finished the information may be outdated and a new book will have to be published. I would get a feel for it via the library if just starting to write and then, purchase a personal copy upon readiness to become published so that your money is spent on a up-to-date version.

Other than those two critiques, I give the Christian Writer's Market Guide 2012 a five out of five rating. It is an indispensable tool for a writer to have.

The latest information on Christian Publishing

This is a book I am increasingly thankful for. The Christian Writer's Market Guide 2012 is exactly what its subtitle professes to be: Your Comprehensive Resource for Getting Published. This book is truly a "one stop shop" for the aspiring writer of Christian literature.

I encountered the Christian Writers' Market Guide for the first time with the 2009 edition. At that time the book was still being authored by Sally E. Stuart, who had been the author of the guide for over twenty years; this is the first year the task of compiling the guide by someone other than Stuart.

Jerry Jenkins has taken on the responsibility of continuing Stuart's work and has kept the outline and information flow of the Guide almost identical to that of the original. This is good news for folks who have used the guide in previous years...and good news for newbies alike. The original work had been perfected over the two plus decades of publication and doesn't make a lot of sense to change something that works so well simply for the sake of change itself. I commend Jenkins for the wisdom of this decision.

The value of this book/guide cannot be overstated. The compilation itself is monumental in the amount of work and time that it saves the person-writer who needs the information contained in its pages. As an aspiring writer myself, I am keenly aware of the rapid changes that have taken place in the publishing world with the recent leaps in technology and how that affects the publication industry. It is important to know and follow the respective guidelines for each publisher when submitting work for consideration and this guide is invaluable in those regards.

The Christian Writer's Market Guide 2012 doesn't begin and end with a list of publishers and their submission guidelines; there are a number of other helpful tools and pieces of information that can be of use to the aspiring author as well as the seasoned writer. A few of these specialized pieces of information can be found in part four of the book, Helps for Writers. In this section are several chapters sharing some great resources. A couple of chapters, for example, that are of interest to me are chapter ten--Christian Writers' Conferences and Workshops and chapter fourteen--Contests.

This Market Guide for 2012 is a faithful continuation of the original work and previous users can be assured of the integrity of content this volume and version contains. New users can also be confident that the information shared in the guide will be a guaranteed boost to their efforts in submitting successful queries to potential publishers as the information is relevant, accurate, and up-to-date with requirements and contacts. Thank you, Jerry Jenkins for carrying on this faithful work.

Not exactly what I was expecting

I do like this book. I was able to get a few tips out of it, but for the most part I paid for hundreds of pages I'll never use. I was looking for an agent who represented Christian novels, and when I got the book, the size of it led me to believe I'd have quite a selection. The listings I needed were nearly all the way to the back and there were only a few pages out of the mass I paid for that I will actually use. Two of the listings are for agents who aren't working anymore, and one may be a typo for the email address listed doesn't work. A website is listed for "hundreds more agent listings", but it's an ad and led me no where. I maybe found twenty agents I could contact that I didn't find on the web for free. I think these days starting on the web is the best idea, for you can get tips from agents on how to submit to them on their website, and many are very good about telling you how to perfect your cover letter and query. I don't think I wasted my money, but I'm not going to rush out and buy the 2013 version, either.

Get Ready To Break the Rules!

Bill goes against the grain of modern thinking by taking a look at the issues men face in today's Christian church by stepping back and using sound assessments of where things have gone awry. Unfortunately he's right; the modern church has lost its message for men. By pointing out 6 rules modern society has placed on men in an attempt to change the way God has us wired, Bill faces the opposition head on and there are some who will become angered by this message. Much like his book 6 Battles, Bill pulls no punches as you set down the path to gain your freedom from the bonds that society has placed upon you. Be prepared, this book will offend some Christians, only because the truth can be painful. But others will see the truth, the need for confronting the 6 rules every man must break.

Humorous and Light Hearted

Bill Perkins made his book appraochable for a genearation of men who tend to read less. His humor about life situations and his straightforward candor to issues we find within contemporary Christianity are at most places on point. Occassional he crosses a line between what he believes and what Scripture clearly teaches on, but not too often. His chapter dealing with Abiding in the Vine (chapter 3) is the best I have come across in a long time!

I recommend this book to pastors who need to lighten up a little and I recommend it to all men's ministry leaders. We live in a time that more rules need to be broken if we are to reach an emerging generation for Christ.

Chronological Bible

Spiritual leaders of all generations have agreed upon the importance of daily Bible reading as a vital means of growth and maturity. Many Bible readers have wished for a method that would help them with the discipline of a regular, systematic study of God's inspired Word. "The One Year Chronological Bible" not only meets this need but also gives you a perspective you cannot get from a Bible laid out in canonical order.

What is the canonical order?

The canonical order is the order in which the books of the Bible are normally arranged. This order groups books of similar content together. The books of the Bible are arranged canonically in the following order: Law (Genesis-Deuteronomy), History (Joshua-Esther), Wisdom Literature (Job-Song of Songs), Prophets (Isaiah-Malachi), Gospels (Matthew-John), early church history (Acts), Pauline Epistles (Romans-Philemon), General Epistles (Hebrews-Jude), and Apocalyptic Literature (Revelation). The canonical order was developed by Jerome, who translated the Bible into Latin in the late fourth century ad.

Although Jerome's order is logical, it does not clearly represent the order in which the events of the Bible unfolded. Now this makes sense! Finally someone made a easy to read & understand translation!

This is great to have a translation that doesn't skip all around. This makes the Bible so much easier to read & understand. I'm not a beginner but wanted a Bible told in chronological order just for a different perspective. I've even picked up on things that I didn't in my regular Living Bible. It gives a fresh feel to it so maybe I was paying better attention & got more understanding. This Bible would be a great choice for anyone and especially for beginners because of the NLT, which uses our everyday language. If you've never read a Bible with a New Living Translation, it will SO OPEN up the Bible to you. If you get the meaning, then God's word will start to truly work in your life like never before! I never understood the King James Version & the stories meant very little to me because I felt like I could not relate. I had heard the same stories for years growing up & in & out of church but I didn't understand God's word & it wasn't effective until I bought a Living Bible translation & finally got true understanding of his word. The NLT is the newest translation after the Living Bible translation. Also, I like the size of the Bible, not too big & heavy but not too small either. The font size is perfect, no squinting or holding it closer to read. Great choice in a Bible!

I love seeing how everything falls into place, in chronological order!

Our church started reading the Chronological Bible at the beginning of this year, and we decided to order this copy in the New Living Translation rather than buying the New International Version the church was offering. First of all, let me say that this is an excellent resource, and a superb translation! We love the NLT because of it's easy-to-read, easy-to-understand wording. We also like how this Bible orders everything. There are differences in opinion as to the chronology of biblical events and writings, and we like the way this particular version does it.

One word of warning: the chronology in this Bible is VERY different from the One Year Chronological Bible in the NIV. We ended up not being able to use it for the majority of the year because it was totally different than what our church was doing. This was very aggravating because I expected, since it was still the One Year Chronological Bible, that the order if everything would be the same, no matter what translation it was. Not so. I'm not sure why that was, but just know that if you're looking to read along with someone that has a different translation of this same Bible. The readings will be totally different. We plan to read through this again sometime, and use this Bible in its entirety.

One flaw. Still -- great product!

This product is great! I love listening to the daily Scripture readings on my MP3 player while doing chores, walking to the bus stop, riding the bus, etc., etc. The sections are organized by date and a daily reading chart comes in the box, so you know exactly which books and chapters are being read for the day. Often I listen to the portion for the day, twice or more times throughout the day. When a harmony of the same event as recounted in different books is presented, the reader/narrator starts by saying, e.g., "from Matthew" and "from Luke." The chronological order is a very insightful way of reading/hearing the Bible.

This is not a dramatized version, however, the narrator does a fantastic job reading the Scriptures - It does not sound boring or dull at all.

My only disappointment with this product is that when you load the CDs onto your MP3 player, this products shows up as "Unknown," and there is no way to change this info. For the price (even at the current reduced price of $26.39,) the makers could have provided proper labeling for the discs. There are 5 discs. If you load them all at once onto your MP3 player, they all show up as "Unknown." To avoid confusion, I have opted to upload only one disc at any given time onto my MP3 player. This means that I will have to delete and upload 5 times a year. Not something I would have expected to have to do at this item's price point. It would have been helpful if they would have labeled the discs e.g. as: NLT-OYCB d1, etc., thru d5. This would make it much easier to navigate on the MP3 player menu. For this reason, I give the product 4 stars instead of 5. The daily readings in each "Unknown" disc are properly labeled.

All in all, I do enjoy this product very much.

Great Intentions

I have a twelve year old who loves God's word and realizes he needs guidance when it comes to circumstances around him. Making right choices, dealing with bullies, school, these are things our son deals with.

No Girls Allowed is a book by Jayce O'Neal filled with devotions that tackle these issues with encouragement and Scripture. He uses topical things boys can relate to, Kurt Warner and sports, Star Trek, movies, etc...to bring home the point. In addition, after the devotionals there are puzzles and a things to do section. There are additional quotes and illustrations to back up the message as well.

I love the idea of this book but as a girl, I thought I'd see more visual stimulation that guys respond to. The illustrations are better than anything I could do but they don't present a "wow" factor to complement the devotions. The boys I teach need hands on activities and puzzles and quotes aren't the top way I think most boys would remain captivated by the material.

In this digital age I sense this book misses the mark even though the intentions are there.

Without sharing my thoughts, I asked my son to take a good look at the book and share what he thought.
He confirmed my thoughts by saying the devotions were good and were about things he dealt with, but nothing so unique that it warranted the warning about no girls. He thought there would be Earth shattering information and for him, was encouragement he appreciated, but nothing life changing for him. He said the puzzles were nice, but nothing that interested him. The artwork he thought was ok. He said the book kind of seemed old fashioned and had he been in a bookstore, he would have walked by it. Perhaps in this anime era that kind of artwork would have stood out.

My suggestion is this is encouraging material that maybe a younger boy might enjoy. I'm always up for devotions using God's word to help children. It lists the book for boys age 8-12. I'm believing the younger set would definitely benefit from this book.

Book Review No Girls Allowed

No Girls Allowed by Jayce O'Neal is a wonderful devotional book for boys. I loved the structure of this book. It's organized well for both parents and kids. Each begins with a Bible verse that is the basis for the devotion. Then comes the devotion. Next is a prayer relating to the theme. Then there is some sort of game such as word searches, secret codes, and unscramble puzzles. Following that is a "Things To Do" list about how to put the topic into action in a boy's life. Very practical and hands-on. Next comes "Things To Remember" which is full of other pertinent Bible verses relating to the theme. And finally there is a wisdom section which contains quotes from both historical and modern people from all walks of life.

I enjoyed the devotional stories which were the perfect length. They were long enough to get the point across while not being too lengthy for an active young boy. The content varied for all interests and covered many relevant issues.

This devotional book was not cheesy as I've found some to be. With the added sections as described above, the book is well-rounded and simply fun. I highly recommend this book.

Fun, Easy to Read & Bibically Sound

No Girls Allowed by Jayce O'Neal is a devotional geared towards boys ages 8-12. An odd choice for this single mother of none, I know. However, I AM a teacher and an aunt of two boys within this age bracket.

I specifically requested this book for my nephews. As expected, the puzzles and secret codes were a hit (although the crosswords are probably a bit difficult for the younger boys since there is no answer bank and not all the questions are taken word-for-word from the text). I particularly like the basic format of having a scripture to start with, a little story or scenario and then ending with a short prayer. The puzzles and secret codes reinforce the theme and there's even an application section that gives the boys some suggestions for applying what they just read about to their lives at home and/or at school. After the application section are a few scriptures to give more biblical backing to the theme. I love that there are three quotes printed to the right of the scriptures at the end of each devotional selection; it makes my English major heart go pitter-patter! The quotes are taken from famous authors, historical figures, christian intellectuals, superhero movies, athletes, etc. I personally think it's good exposure for the kiddos.

Another thing I like about O'Neal's devotional is that he keeps it real. In a gentle way he explains that life is not always ice cream and action figures; bad things happen, even when you did nothing wrong. He encourages your child with the fact that God is still there and still loves him and will help him through the difficult times.

If you homeschool your children OR if they are particularly sheltered then this might not be the best fit for your young child. O'Neal makes references to classroom scenarios that homeschool kids have never been exposed to so may not connect with. He also makes connections to movies and tv shows extremely sheltered kids may not be exposed to (SpongeBob, Batman, Star Trek, Hulk, Transformers, Starwars . . . just to name a few!). Not to say that these show or references are bad, just that they might pique your child's interest before you are ready to show them those particular things (and yes, I know folks whose children don't watch any of the aforementioned shows). But if you're willing to work through and discuss the book with your child then you both should be fine.

Unwrapping a Subpar Book

This is hard for me to do. Giving Ann Voskamp a two-star review seems like a bit of a betrayal since I admire her heart for Jesus, and I also admire many of those who recommended this book. She has contributed and encouraged many; however, this book didn't meet expectations. When I received this book, I was thrilled. I mean, it's beautiful. But, that's about it. If you simply enjoy a pretty display on your bookshelf or coffee table, go ahead and get it. It's night three in the advent, and my husband and I both agreed we were done with this book. Here's why--

1) Foremost, she is interposing her own interpretation of Scripture. In many cases, it appears to be erroneous. For instance, we read about the flood tonight. There was no mention of God's anger. It was all about love. I know, I know--I haven't read the entire book, but after browsing it, I just see more the same--lots of commentary and summation of Scripture. And, here's the alarming part--she mixes her words with words from Scripture, and then just puts a reference at the end. So, one (particularly kids) does not know which is which.

2) Verbose to the max. Everyone--including my literature-loving self--was distracted within a minute of this reading. The sentence structure is overly complex, as if she's trying too hard to be poetic. It was not very engaging.

I am sooo disappointed, I really wanted to love this book. I thought it would even make a nice gift.

My first problem with the book is minor, though it is written to the whole family, most times it seems like it is written for young children, other times the reading seemed geared for adults, as on page 146: "Tonight we're just raggedy manger stragglers who feel the heaviness of our old raggedy clothes from fighting the long battle with evil and badness. With our raggedy rags, we've tried to polish this dark world into something good enough to win our way to freedom. With our raggedy rags, we've tried to patch together our own ropes to somehow climb to freedom. With our raggedy rags, we've tried to disguise ourselves as someone else, as someone better, as someone bigger, thinking we could sneak our way to freedom and back to God." Since most of the book seems written in language appropriate for my young child, the instances of speaking to an adult or older child seem a bit jarring. Not a deal breaker, it just seems strange when coupled with the children's book illustrations and sentences like this one, "The whole blue marble of the world spins happy right now with the gladness of His love."

My biggest problem with the book is the interpretation of Scripture that is on page 145, the reading meant for Christmas Eve, it says that the battle resulting in Satan being hurled to earth (Rev 12:7-12) took place on the night of Jesus' birth. I have never heard that interpretation and I was even unable to find that interpretation during a Google search and cursury search of commentaries. Why, oh why, would Ann put a belief in her book that is not widely held? How did this get past the publisher? And even if it were a widely held belief, why mention Satan on Christmas Eve? It ruins it for me, so very disappointed. "But remember how there is always more happening than we could see. God's letter to us, the Bible, tells us that high, high up in the heavens, above the manger, behind the velvet curtain of silent stars, an all-out war flashed angry. Armies of evil exploded in a raging battle against God, the Father-King of the universe. In heaven, when Jesus was born, it wasn't a silent night; it was a cosmic war spinning across space. All of earth held its desperate, wild breath. Jesus came for you, warring against the darkness to win you back to Him. the evil enemy of God, Satan, who tried to hold us all captive after our sinful fall in the Garden of Eden, fell like lightning from heaven - fell out of the sky in a heap."

I'm disappointed, and unsure at this point if I will even use the book. Maybe I'll just mark over page 145.

how I wanted to love this one

Oh, how I wanted to love this one. I'm still reading it to my children, determined it will change... The illustrations are beautiful, and I can see her heart for the Lord. There are just a few (rather weighty) aspects that seem disturbing...

She tries so hard with her words. The first day or two were simpler writings, and I thought this was a breath of fresh air from her other works. My children understood the words, I was blessed. But here I am, a few days in, and I'm trying to explain half of the sentences I read to them. I really don't like dumbed-down literature, but some of this is just plain confusing. It makes me think of the C.S. Lewis quote about writing plainly so others understand... Especially to children.

As others have mentioned, the theology is off a bit. Yes, she emphasizes the love - I am glad for that! Though she leaves A LOT out. The scripture itself is just her interpretation of the actual verses. And the stories - some of them don't get to the point of God Himself, just about us. I haven't read the Christmas Eve reading many seem to have a problem with, but I can tell already many liberties are taken by Day 6.

The other strange notice? No one seemed to question the repeated lines sound just like Sally Loydd-Jones wrote them? When she describes God's love, she does her very own spin-off on "His never stopping, never giving up, unchanging, always and forever love." It almost seems like she would have had to ask Sally's permission to write some of her sentences this closely. It's very strange. And we do love the Jesus Story Book Bible.

I am grateful for the heart behind the book. I just wish scripture could be enough without changing words, and adding in so many extra words to make one sound over-individualized.
