Pretty little devotional book for women

This is a small book of daily devotions for women. Each two facing pages section has a "Treasure of Truth," a scripture, and a letter from God. These are very moving and thought-provoking. I am not a fan of other people speaking for God, even though well-intentioned. It makes me uncomfortable for them to put words into His mouth even though they are basing those on the scripture. It is a pretty little book and would make a nice gift and if you are comfortable with letters from God in a book other than the Bible, you might find this an interesting little book.

Some Mixed Emotions

When the opportunity to read and review Sheri Rose Shepherd's newest book, His Treasure Gems of Love from Your King, was presented I was excited at the prospect of reading her work. I've heard some of her conference messages and found Sheri to be a very compelling speaker.

Based on her writing, I would say that Sheri has a love for the Lord and heart for women. She desires that the women will grasp the love that God has for them and the blessings that come to a woman who loves the Lord, increasingly trusts and obeys Him.

I found many of the Treasures to be very encouraging, convicting and they touched tender spots where I have emotional wounds that need the Lord's healing.

Sheri's love and passion for the Lord comes through in her writing.

I also want to share how I struggled with this book. My struggle is with the style or genre of this book as if God is speaking to the reader. I would have felt more comfortable if instead the writer was praying to God. It's easy to not accurately represent God, because we see Him through our own unique perspective that is colored by our life and experiences. I also felt like the sovereignty and holiness of God was somewhat lacking. The focus seemed to be on the person to whom God was talking and less focused on God. As portrayed, God seemed to be gently trying to persuade the beloved child or daughter and was seldom revealed as God, the absolute Authority to Whom we will give an account. I would have also appreciated if scripture references had been given that would line up to the words God was speaking.

Gems Of Love From Your King is a devotional-style book by Sheri ...

His Treasure: Gems Of Love From Your King is a devotional-style book by Sheri Rose Shepherd. Each devotion includes a "letter from God", a "Treasure of Truth", and a Scripture or two pertaining to the subject.

I really don't like writing negative reviews, and I like Sheri Rose Shepherd (I read, reviewed, and enjoyed Your Heart's Desire), so let me start with the positive. This book is absolutely beautiful. It's a gorgeous padded hardcover book with stunningly beautiful color pages inside with lovely illustrations. It looks like it would be a great book to present as a gift.

On the negative side, I did not like the style of Sheri writing letters "from God". She speaks in the first person tone as if she's speaking directly from God to you. I've not really seen this writing style before (other than the aforementioned Your Heart's Desire, but in that book it was brief blurbs here and there, not the whole book, so I just skimmed/skipped over them) and it makes me *extremely* uncomfortable. As a human being, I don't feel right putting words in God's mouth and speaking/writing them as directly from Him - I feel like it's a scary thing to put words in God's mouth that didn't come directly from His Word - the Bible. I understand what she's trying to do here, but it feels wrong in my spirit. God has given us all the Words He wants to give us in the Bible, and I don't feel like it's our place to give Him new words that we've made up and sign His name to it.

I know Sheri has a heart for the Lord and helps many women, but a better writing style probably would have been as a form of prayer TO the Lord, as opposed to a letter directly (supposedly) FROM the Lord. Because of all this, I can't personally really recommend this book. I'm sure others may feel differently and that's okay, too.

This holiday novella's premise is a Christmas-time court battle over a live crèche scene set up in the town square of Possum, Va. Thomas Hammond loves playing Joseph in this crèche, and he is determined to keep turning out for his role regardless of what the ACLU or a decidedly Grinch-like judge has to say about it. His resolve earns him the respect of some of his fellow church-goers, but it also lands him in jail. He is defended by Jasmine Woodfaulk, a third-year law student who sticks with the case even though its notoriety costs her a plum job at a top law firm in New York. By the end of this story, of course, folks who disagree about the constitutionality of crèches manage to unite in the celebration of Christmas. Sometimes it is unclear when the author is aiming for satire and when he is playing it straight. For example, when Jasmine goes to argue her appeal before a three-judge appellate court, the one judge obviously on her side is an African-American Bush appointee conveniently named Judge Clarence. Then there's Theresa, Thomas's wife, who doesn't seem to know what a cell phone is. Nonetheless, this fresh approach to Christmas inspiration will stand out.

Randy Singer is the critically acclaimed author of four legal thrillers, including Self Incrimination, and two nonfiction books. Doggone it,” grunted Thomas, glancing toward the Holstein as the big fella lifted its tail. “What’re they feedin’ that thing anyway?”

Theresa smiled to herself and watched the cow pie form on the woodchips blanketing the ground of their makeshift manger. Thomas shook his head then hustled behind the partition that formed the back of their little stall, strategically located on one side of the Possum town square. He returned with a shovel and black plastic bag, scooping up the mess before the family of four climbed out of the Ford Explorer at the edge of the square. Visitors
had been sparse tonight, kept away by a cold and steady drizzle. Plus, people didn’t usually have time to visit the live manger scene this early in the season. There was simply too much
shopping to do.

“I’d help you out, but I just got baby Jesus to sleep,” said Theresa, as she cuddled the plastic doll wrapped in swaddling Wal-Mart blankets. “You know what a momma’s boy He is.”

“Don’t be disrespectful,” muttered Thomas, his voice low so he couldn’t be heard by the approaching family. They had learned that it somehow broke the reverence of the occasion if Mary and Joseph were bickering.

“Didn’t mean no disrespect,” Theresa whispered. She looked lovingly at the baby in her arms, its chubby little face glistening as the spotlight bounced off its plastic cheeks. It was only a doll, but it was special in so many ways. For two years this doll had played the part of the Christ child in the otherwise live Nativity scene. And Theresa, who had been honored to take her shift as a thirtyfive- year-old replica of the teenage Virgin Mary, had seen some pretty amazing things happen when people came to visit.

But the baby doll was special for other reasons as well. It was, after all, the favorite doll of Theresa’s eight-year-old daughter, Hannah, a constant companion that Hannah had named “Bebo” when Hannah was only three. Bebo’s plastic face, hands, and feet, once a clean and fleshy pink, now took on the hue of a Middle Eastern baby, colored by thousands of hugs, kisses, and strokes from Hannah’s grubby little hands and lips. Bebo’s cloth body had been patched twice in an effort to keep the stuffing from falling out. Other dolls and stuffed animals had come and gone in the Hammond household, but Bebo stayed around, sleeping under Hannah’s arm every night.

Because she was nearly human anyway, Bebo was a natural choice to play the Christ child. Nobody outside the Hammond family needed to know that Bebo was really a girl. “What smells?” asked the approaching teenage girl as she turned up her nose and huddled under an umbrella with her mother.

“Maybe one of the shepherds farted,” said her younger brother. Theresa noticed Thomas stiffen, but she knew he would hold his tongue. As soon as the family left, however, Thomas would complain about the lack of discipline in families these days.

“Justin!” snapped the boy’s father. He stood to the boy’s side, hunched down in his own trench coat, seeking protection from the wind and drizzle.

“That’s not even funny,” said the girl.

“ ‘That’s not even funny,’ ” mocked Justin. “You’re such a suck-up.”

Theresa watched as the dad glared at Justin, but the boy avoided his father’s eyes.

Theresa gauged Justin to be junior-high age–thirteen, maybe fourteen. He was listening to his iPod, swaying slightly to its beat, his face shielded by a large hooded sweatshirt. Theresa thought about her own son, a little six-year-old pistol they had nicknamed Tiger. She wondered if she would survive Tiger as a teen.

“Amazing, isn’t it?” the mother said as she stepped closer to Theresa and looked down at the Christ child. “That God loved us enough to send His Son to be born in a place like this.”

Theresa nodded, flashing back to the delivery of her surprise baby–Elizabeth Leigh–ten months ago. The labor was brutal, even with all the comforts of the Virginia Beach General Hospital. But Mary–she delivered Jesus in a barn with Joseph as a midwife and with no epidurals.

“Amazing,” Theresa muttered in agreement.

“It’s not like He was born in Possum,” said Justin. But the mother ignored him and inched a little closer. After locking eyes with Theresa, she touched her fingers to her lips, kissed them, then placed them on the cheek of baby Jesus. Her daughter, without saying a word, did the same.

“Thanks for being out here, even in the rain,” said the mom.

Theresa smiled and nodded. “God bless you,” she said. She watched as the mom and her daughter locked arms under their umbrella, then turned and headed back to the car. As Justin trailed behind them, the dad began to follow but hesitated and turned back toward Theresa. He took a few tentative steps, looked deep into her eyes, and did something that always gave Theresa goose bumps.

He went down on one knee in front of her and bowed his head.

She wanted to tell him to get up. The grass was wet and the Lord knew that nobody should be bowing to her. But the Lord also knew that this man didn’t take a knee out of respect for some thirty-five-year-old mom who lived in a double-wide trailer in Possum. He was bowing before the Christ child, and Theresa had no right to interfere with that. She realized that Mary, the mother of Jesus, must have felt the same sense of unworthiness and awe when the shepherds came to honor her child.

She glanced over at Thomas and saw the look of appreciation in his dark brown eyes. His face was shining, wet from the drizzle, and she could see fatigue in every muscle, but the look reflected her own thoughts–This is why we’re out here.

And then, after a few seconds, the man crossed himself and rose. He reached out and touched Theresa’s hand even as she held tight to the make-believe baby. He squeezed softly. “Thanks,” he said. Then he turned and walked away.

Something of value here

First, a disclaimer: I'm Christian, but not A Christian as the religious right has taken over the term. I'm also a lawyer, with a profound appreciation of our Constitution. I'm about as liberal as I can be. And I believe separation of church and state is one of the best ideas the US has ever had.

I read this book 1)to see how the religious right distorts our position to say we are preventing them from celebrating Christmas, and 2) because I like Christmas stories.

The plot involves a man more of action than of words who sets up a creche on the town square with the permission of the town's mayor, and proceeds to pray with and for those who come to see the display. An ACLU lawyer with "slick" hair and appropriately named "Harrod" (!) files suit in the US District Court to stop the display. The judge, also described as markedly unattractive, considers the facts of the case in light of actual recent court decisions on the subject, and, coming down on the side of the ACLU, issues an injunction. The man flouts the injunction (and here the book repeatedly incorrectly substitutes 'flaunts' for 'flouts') and sets up his creche again and again, trying to circumvent established law but only landing himself in jail for contempt of court.

To my surprise, I quite enjoyed the book. Its plot is thin, its characters somewhat weak, its ending maudlin, but it has moments of real humor. I particularly enjoyed the part where the homeless man hastily recruited to play Santa Claus informs the children he dandles on his knee that the measure of whether they are bad or good is how much they give to the homeless! Its explanation of the three Supreme Court cases dealing with Christmas displays on public land was entirely accurate, unbiased, and informative, without being boring. And, as a bonus, its brief but very entertaining section on the history of Christmas made me see the song We Wish You a Merry Christmas in a whole new way!

All in all, it's an easy, enjoyable read and a good choice for anyone who wants to know where our courts stand on the issue of celebrating the religious aspects of Christmas on public land.

A Great Christmas Story

This short novel is well written, entertaining, and fun. It also features some thought provoking legal issues.

It features Thomas Hammond who is participating in a live nativity display on town property in Possum, Virginia. The ACLU files suit to stop this Christmas feature on the grounds of separation of church and state.

A federal judge, Cynthia Baker-Kline sides with the ACLU and orders the program halted. Hammond fights it alone as the city fathers leave him hanging out to dry. The story also features a sleazy TV preacher (who is trying to use the controversy as a fund raiser).

As with all of his books, Randy Singer does a great job of creating unexpected twists and surprising the readers. Although the ending is a bit anticlimactic, the conclusion does have quite a surprise that will get readers thinking about both sides of this issue.

I highly recommend this book as well as Singer's others. I think that this was the only one of his that I had not read until now. I am glad that I did. If you are unfamiliar with this great author, try this or one of his others. You will be in for a treat.

The Legality of Christmas.

I purchased this book from Amazon not knowing what to expect. Low and behold I found a real treasure of a story that details separation of church and state. As a Christian I will be honest and say that I am disappointed that this peace loving holiday becomes a battle ground for the ACLU. Yet, I acknowledge and understand their rights and respect what is Caesar's.

Thomas and his wife Theresa have a live nativity crèche set up in the local square. It is called into question by the ACLU attorney who argues it is against the law to have this scene on public property. Thomas is a devout man and refuses to bend to the government's stance, thus the court gets involved.

I could tell you more of the story but this sets up the scenes for a very honest, well researched(the author is an attorney and has written many legal thrillers) and enjoyable read about this honest battle.....with respect for all other religions and cultures, this book looks at all sides of this battle with warmth and fervor.

The tale made me laugh and tear-up. Is it sentimental?...YOU BET!. Is it comforting and gentle in the discussion?....AFFIMATIVE.. Do all sides get a chance to show their concerns...MOST DEFINETLY. Did I enjoy this lovely Christmas story.....YES, YES, YES.

I will now search out Mr. Singer's legal fare and wish you all a Merry Christmas from a heart without malice that wants Peace and Joy on earth to be the rule, not the exception to it.

Stick with the original The Way...

I have a copy of the original publication of The Way and love it (even though the pictures and blurbs before each book are very outdated), and have purchased many over the years for friends/family. It's safe to say, I'm a huge fan of the concept. I was so, so excited to see this updated version, but am so disappointed after reading some of it. There's a lot they did right with this publication, but the thing I cannot read (or give others to read) are the "Laments" pieces that are spread throughout the text. These pieces are people expressing their doubts about God and the Bible. Why on earth would someone publish a Bible introducing doubts about the text and God??? I could understand if doubts were expressed and then the doubts were addressed/answered using scriptural evidence and thus building faith and trust in God, but this was not the case. Some of the Laments I read introduced doubts that never even crossed my mind until I read them IN THIS BIBLE!!! This Bible was such a great idea but missed the mark in this respect. Had to return it and will continue purchasing the original The Way for friends and family.

Great Concept, Great Bible

The cover of this Bible intrigued me first. It didn't look like the other Bibles and when I read the back cover it definitly called to me. The inside has beautiful photos, and visually impacts the reader.

The thing that makes this Bible stand out from other devotional ones is that it has real stories and narratives inside from everyday Christians from all walks of life. And they aren't all stories like "this bad thing happened and God saved the day." No, they are very real and very easy to relate to. Some express doubts, some express pain, some express anger. They aren't easy subjects either, tackling things like the Christian community and homosexuals and waiting for marriage and sex.

I've been waiting for something like this for a very long time. I love the NLT translation and the format of this Bible allows for plenty of room to write notes, prayers, and your own stories in the margins. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because it's a paperback and because for it's book introductions it uses those silly barcode things to take you to a website using your phone. I wish they had just printed them on a page. Not everyone has a phone capable of that technology and frankly I would rather just have that information in front of me.

This Bible definitely would appeal more towards college students and young adults, considering the devotional content and the formart of the Bible.

More specifically, the lessons he learned from a grandmother who raised him after the death of his mother. For a period of time, he lost touch with her (Billye) and with her wisdom. Eventually, he was reunited with both. So what we have in Today We Are Rich is a prequel to the earlier books.

As Sanders explains, his grandmother probably had the greatest influence (the most beneficial influence) on his professional as well as personal development. When introducing the first of seven principles of Total Confidence, that fact immediately becomes obvious:

Principle 1: Feed Your Mind Good Stuff

"Billye got up with the chickens at the crack of dawn and yet kept bankers' hours. What did she do during the hours in between? She fed her mind good stuff.

"Billye was just as judicious in her response to what others tried to put in her head. She avoided "gossip snipes" as if they had an infectious disease. She even dumped negative-minded friends after one too many offenses. When one of the ladies at our church asked her why a Christian woman would quit friends over the words they used, Billye would paraphrase Dr. Norman Vincent Peale from The Power of Positive Thinking: "What comes out of the mind is what you put in the mind. You must feed your mind like you feed your body."

"Her positive-intake plan wasn't selfish--it was purposeful. The filter she put on what or whom she listened to wasn't prudish--it was prudent. The secret to positive thinking, she had learned, lies in consuming the right mind food. From waking thoughts to the edge of sleep, she fed her mind mostly good stuff."

"You should be as careful about what you put into your mind as about what you put into your mouth. Your mind is a machine. When you ingest a piece of information, your mind goes to work, chewing on it, digesting it, and then converting it into a thought. When good stuff goes into your mind, good thoughts emerge. People who maintain purposeful mind diets of positive stimuli think healthy thoughts.

"The reason it is so important to feed your mind good stuff is that the resulting thoughts determine your success or failure, your happiness or misery, and most important, the circumstances of your life. Those who do not have a diet plan for their minds are subject to their worst memories and the world's constant fear chatter--and those result in disturbing thought patterns.

"That's essentially the premise behind Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich: `Every man is what he is, because of the dominating thoughts which he permits to occupy his mind. . . . We are what we are, because of the vibrations of thought which we pick up and register, through the stimuli of our daily environment.'

"And Hill wasn't the only one to write about the importance of our thoughts. James Allen wrote his groundbreaking book As a Man Thinketh in 1903, with Proverbs 23:7 as its premise: "As he thinketh in his heart, so is he" (King James Version). The premise of his book was simple, yet profound: `Good thoughts bear good fruit; bad thoughts bear bad fruit.'"

This extended excerpt offers at least some indication of how and why Billye's influence on young Sanders proved to be so significant. With regard to the other six principles, they are:

My maternal grandmother arrived from Sweden as a teenaged indentured servant to a wealthy family living in the Hyde Park area near the University of Chicago. Eventually, she married and had four children, my mother the youngest. After my parents divorced, my mother and I moved in with Edith Johnson in a large house shared with two bachelor uncles, a married aunt, and her family. My mother worked six days a week (and frequently several evenings) to earn enough to support us and so, to a significant extent, I was raised by my grandmother. I think she and Billye were kindred spirits.

As I read Sanders' accounts of his conversations with Billye, I fondly recalled my own grandmother in the kitchen baking Swedish coffee cakes, sharing (in her own words) almost exactly the same advice that Sanders received from Billye.

This is Tim Sanders' most important book, at least thus far, because he focuses so eloquently on values and behavior that ultimately determine how "rich" or impoverished a person is. For him and for me, and probably for many others, the value of having a grandmother for all seasons is incalculable.

"It's big enough for all of us"

Dale Carnegie would enjoy meeting Tim Sanders. Sanders is more or less a good-news guru for the business space and his new book "Today We Are Rich: Harnessing the Power of Total Confidence" solidifies this role. Sanders returns the reader to making a difference with oneself, first.

Frankly, Americans could use some good news and a bit of a pep talk right now. Record unemployment, bankruptcies and foreclosures dot the landscape. We are a society that seems to be sliding sideways, to use one of Sander's terms.

Tim Sanders brought readers Love is the Killer Ap applying principles of positive thinking to new subjects and spreading the news with the technology evangelism of a true Yahoo! Executive. Now Sanders is focused on writing and speaking, casting himself as a people-centric business expert.

Sanders builds a solid case for bringing values-driven actions down to the smallest increments in our daily lives, looking at what we can do each day for those around us. Far from new age psychobabble, Sanders delivers pragmatic actions to build positive habits. But unlike many books that fall in this category, Sanders directs his suggestions to practices of giving as a primary source of improving self-esteem, confidence and daily satisfaction. Describing this as a virtuous cycle--giving which gives to the giver and receiver, leads to more giving and more satisfaction--Tim Sanders invites readers to return to the `good loop' and details basic life skills to keep one there.

Today We Are Rich is a personal account, detailing Tim's own life's struggles and the tools he has applied to propel himself away from despair and general `stuckness'. In doing so, he discusses specifically Christian disciplines, even though prayer, requests for forgiveness and recognition of a higher power suggest a much broader application and audience.

A short read of a few hundred pages, Today We Are Rich could be a non-fiction self help book, a memoir or a business handbook, depending on the reader's frame of mind. Like so much described in the book itself, responding is a personal choice--but it is likely at least some of these suggestions will be of use, even if only as a brief reminder of the broad world outside the line of our personal vision.

Closing with a discussion of the good loop of giving and receiving, Sanders observes "This is where I want to end up, a virtuous cycle, where I can make a difference to others and the results continuously refresh my body soul and body.... I invite you into this loop too. It's big enough for all of us."

Like a GPS for tapping into the confidence you have within

Tim Sanders offers up an easily followed formula for not only identifying the confidence that each of us rightly possesses, but more importantly a regiment of mental exercises that will allow us to tap into this natural internal resource so that we can use it to make a difference not only in our lives and in the lives of those around us but in the world.

Yes I realize that might sound a little hokey but that is what I believe his work to be. Tim's themes are focused on common sense and the often written about 'power of positive thinking'. This could turn some readers off but I would suggest that if you are in that camp that is turned off by such a suggestion then you should most definitely give the book a read.

What to expect:
The opening of the book provides Tim's narrative around his motivation for writing it. You will find the story inspiring.

From there Tim outlines Seven Principals of Total Confidence. They are:
- Feeding the mind good stuff (i.e. consume positive knowledge and shut out negative)
- Moving the conversation forward (driving your internal monologue in positive action oriented direction)
- Exercising your gratitude muscle (making a point to be truly grateful in every area of your goings on)
- Give to be rich (acting with out expecting a return on your actions)
- Prepare yourself (example of the of the old axiom of luck being the intersection of preparation and opportunity)
- Balance your confidence (my favorite chapter! the idea of guiding your actions to make sure they lie squarely between your passion and purpose)
- Promise made, Promise kept (very good step by step on what a commitment from you should mean - including knowing when NOT to promise something)

Turning Points is one of the best devotionals I've ever read!! I love the daily verse, simple message, and quotes from some great Christian writers!! Add in a beautiful imitation leather cover and silky thin black ribbon bookmark, and this book was not at all the thin, magazine paper booklet some might expect. Fantastic devotional!

A beautiful book packed with wise council from one of the most well known Christian Drs. anywhere and I'd say this is a great buy!! No complaints from me!

This is an excellent daily devotional collection

This is an excellent daily devotional collection. David Jeremiah is a great writer. Each day is filled with wonderful Bible texts and practical, uplifting applications. He ends each one with a quote from writers such as C.S. Lewis and Martin Luther that bless and encourage. Start or end your day with these messages and you will be changed.

Great book by and for the Mentor Leader

The Mentor Leader is an excellent book that is both inspiring, challenging, and practical. Coach Dungy offers a truly unique perspective as a Super Bowl winning football coach, a devoted Christian, and a man who has benefited much mentoring and who has intentionally sought for years to have a positive influence on the lives of those he touches. The book is certainly not shy of principles and thoughtful teaching on the topics of mentoring in leadership, but it really shines as a practical and wise approach that has been borne in the laboratory of life rather than taught in a business school. Author of best-selling book Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, and Priorities of a Winning Life, he has seen firsthand "that the way to bring the best out of an individual or a team is to teach-by example and through one-on-one, step-by-step mentoring." The book is packed full of stories and anecdotes, but it is not just a random assortment of anecdotes. Dungy actually covers a lot of material, and arranges it thoughtfully.

If you're a fan of leadership books, you'll recognize ideas and quotes by leadership experts such as Ken Blanchard, Steven Covey, John Maxwell and others. If not, that's ok too, as he weaves these in naturally along with stories and real-life illustrations. Dungy also does a great job at pointing out where ideas like mentoring and servant leadership are taught and modeled in the Bible, especially in the life of Jesus.

Some of the topics or concepts that I thought were particularly interesting: focusing on strengths, the preeminence of character and integrity in the live of a leader, building a team whose strengths complement yours and each others, the importance of just hanging out and being present in the lives of those you hope to influence, the need to create a culture to effect change, and the idea of treating those you lead as volunteers. Now, there's nothing ground-breaking in any of this, but Dungy does a great job of modeling all of this, and of explaining it in a down-to-earth way.

Towards the end he finishes by acknowledging that a lot has been covered, and the idea of being a mentor leader might be a daunting one, a lot to remember. So he encourages us with this advice: "Don't worry about remembering it. Think instead about beginning to live what we've talked about - each and every day, in every setting of your life. And let me encourage you to start right where you are, with the people right around you, doing something as simple as engaging with them and talking. Sometimes the smallest things we do have the biggest impact. Just start."

Being a mentor leader is being about the journey, adding value in the lives of other people in every moment. The Mentor Leader should be of great interest for fans of leadership and football alike.

If you've been put off by leaders who leave a wake of wreckage behind as they bulldoze towards objectives, then Dungy's writing will be fresh air to you. His conviction is that the focus of a great leader should be not on outcomes, but on the good of those being led. His purpose is clear, people first, and then objectives.

Dungy makes a clear distinction between a position of leadership and a person of leadership. Even without a formal leadership title, people can still make a difference as they influence those around them. Additionally, Dungy doesn't believe leadership is something a person is born with, but rather it's a trait to be developed. A person does this by committing to those around them.

Unlike many books on leadership, particularly business books, this biographical account comes across sincerely, warmly, and compellingly. Dungy's focus on people is exemplified in his writing style - it's encouraging rather than demeaning.

As one might expect, many of the anecdotes and the immediate context in which leadership traits are conveyed is couched in football. Dungy is, after all, a football coach. So, be prepared to hear about situations, and circumstances, and even conflict that has surrounded his many years of coaching.

In short, if you're not afraid of the pig skin and if you could use some encouragement - this just might be the book you're looking for.

A useful resource!

In his introduction, Dungy outlines the "essential traits of a mentor" (p. xvii-xviii):

* Mentoring "can be taught and learned; but in order to be absorbed, it must be practiced"
* Mentoring "focuses on developing the strengths of individuals"
* Mentoring "works best" when there is "genuine concern" shown
* Mentoring is about "shaping, nurturing, empowering, and growing"
* Mentoring is "about relationships, integrity, and perpetual learning"
* Mentoring is "about changing lives" (p. xvii-xviii)

Although all 9 chapters of Dungy's book relates to the "mentor leader," there were 3 chapters that seemed to prepare the heart of the mentor: Chapter 3, "A Look Within," Chapter 4, "Characteristics That Matter," and Chapter 6, "Living the Message" (p. 45, 67, 123). In chapter 3 Dungy explains, "In order to become an effective mentor, in whatever setting, it is important to take a look inside yourself" (p. 45). He suggests that potential mentors take a "personal inventory" to assess what makes them "think, react, and respond the way they do" and what makes them "do the things they do" (p. 46). An honest self assessment will reveal personal strengths and weaknesses, unresolved issues from the past and meaningful priorities (p. 64-65).

"Character" is described as "the person [others] view as the most trustworthy, who cares the most and who is willing to always do the right thing," and according to Dungy, it is the "glue that bonds solid and meaningful relationships" (p. 71). In chapter 4, Dungy presents the characteristics he believes are "marks" of a good mentor. These "marks" include competence, integrity, authenticity, courageous, faithfulness, accountable, available/approachable, loyalty, and protectiveness (p. 72-91). Throughout this chapter (and the whole book), Dungy uses Biblical references to support his points. For example, Dungy states, "a genuine sense of self-worth is best obtained through a relationship with God" (p. 74). In another part of the chapter, Dungy discusses the parable found in the book of John, chapter 10, to illustrate the "mark" of protectiveness--"When a wolf comes and threatens the flock, the hired hand runs away. . . . the shepherd on the other hand, rises to the defense of his sheep" (p. 94).

Dungy starts chapter 6 with a Scripture verse from the book of Matthew: "Jesus said, `It's not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth. . . . The words you speak come from the heart--that's what defiles you'" (Matt. 15:11, 18). He uses this Bible passage to show that mentoring starts in the heart of the mentor--basically, what is inside determines what will come out (p. 123). Dungy claims that people will notice various things about other individuals: their faith, their words and actions, and their legacy (p. 124-135). When discussing faith, Dungy says, "Faith is the foundation and strength of the mentor . . . . the guiding principle behind everything we do . . . . Faith will go a long way toward giving others a reason to follow you" (p. 134-135). Dungy believes that the "many things that guide the daily steps of mentors" (relationships, impact, involvement, character, faith, and actions) shape one's legacy; "legacy" results in "changed lives" (p. 136, 138). In other words, a mentor is successful if he or she contributes to the positive changes in other people's lives. Dungy's use of the Bible shows that God's Word is important to him. It also shows that even if a mentor has all the necessary traits necessary, it is God who ultimately changes people-- "with God all things are possible" (Matt. 19:26).
