Chris Tiegreen's book 90 Days Thru the Bible: A Devotional Journey from Walk Thru the Bible is an attempt to show the Bible as a big picture. Chris reminds readers that the Bible is not 66 separate books, but one book telling the story of the restoration of man to GOD.
The book itself does not contain the Scriptures you would be reading for each section, but should be used with a Bible of your choosing. The book can be used in one of two ways: 1) read as a book describing the big ideas of each book as they relate to GOD's relationship to man and how each fits in GOD's plan of salvation for man. 2) One can read the assigned scripture and then read the chapter assigned to that Scripture, and answer the questions of reflection at the end of each section.
This is a great idea and honestly, I like this book, however, I think it should be named 365 days through the Bible. Seriously though, one can make it through in 90 days but you won't be doing much else or taking great amounts off time to reflect. The sections to be read each day vary in length. Sometimes it is manageable and sometimes the assigned reading is an entire book of the Old Testament such as Leviticus. I have other studies in the word that I am doing and even if I dropped those this would be hard to keep up with. It is a book worth reading, but don't believe that you are going to get through it and the Bible in just 90 days without some serious effort.

Around the Word in 90 Days

I am a big believer in studying biblical languages, exegesis, hermeneutics and theology. I am grateful for my seminary education but for all it has taught me, the best advice I can give to those who wish to understand the Bible is this: read it. My New Testament professor once said that the Bible is full of treasures but that it does not reveal itself to occasional inquirers. In other words, if you want to understand what the Bible says about creation, what it means to be human, the problem of evil, God's plan of redemption, the mystery of the Trinity and the coming kingdom then you have to immerse yourself in scripture, inhabit the story and learn its symbols and metaphors.
90 Days Thru the Bible is a devotional resource put out by Walk Thru the Bible which (cleverly) is based on a 90 day reading plan which takes readers through the entire Bible. The plan laid out has you read through each of the books of the Bible. Most of the 66 books are each read in a day where some of the longer books are divided over two days or more(Genesis and Psalms are divided into five daily readings; and Exodus Isaiah are divided into three). Chris Tiegreen wrote two-three page reflections based on each of the daily readings.
I am currently using this devotional for my daily Bible reading. No doubt many will find reading through the Bible in three months ambitious. However, from my experience reading through the Bible in a short time is easier than reading through the Bible in one year. One year reading plans often have you reading through chapters from both testaments (and maybe a Psalm and a Proverb). Often they break up literary and thought unit,s making it difficult to follow the overarching themes of a particular book of the Bible. While reading through the Bible in 90 days takes a longer daily commitment on some days (some books of the Bible are really short and this plan never has you do more than one book a day), it enables readers to read through a book or section at one time. This is much easier than spending a month in 1 Chronicles and wondering what the point is. Even if you take longer than the 90-day allotment you are still likely to read through the Bible in 120 days and you will have read the Bible in a more connected and less disjointed way.
Chris Tiegreen's reflections do a nice job of summarizing the passage and pointing out major themes. Each day also provides questions for reflection. Because the format of this devotional is dictated by the Biblical text, it seems more substantive than thematic devotions. That being said, this is a 90 day romp through the Bible so therefore is opaque on some of the details. Tiegreen also can gloss some of the sections that people find difficult (conquest, geneologies, etc.) But this isn't a book for in-depth study, it is a guide through a quick reading of the Bible. The format dictates that all the details do not receive the same attention. I know from experience that when you read the New Testament with the Old Testament still fresh in your mind, you are much more able to appreciate the nuances of the text.
For me, I need a simple plan for reading through the Bible or I find it hard to practice the discipline of daily Bible reading. This book is great for my purposes, with just the right amount of detail to keep me attentive to what the text might be saying to me. If you are looking for a daily devotional guide, this seems like a good choice to me.

A Helpful First Step Toward Biblical Literacy and the Heart of God

The day before receiving this book from Tyndale House, I met with a group of believers who all lamented the fact that they had never read through the entire Bible and felt like they did not totally understand the overall story from Genesis to Revelation. This book could not have been more perfectly timed! I truly believe that this will be a helpful first step for this group and beyond.
I remember the Walk Thru the Bible Seminars that were very popular many years ago. Chris Tiegree has brought these seminars and more to book form. He really emphasizes the whole point of God's longing for relationship with us and brings out the Scarlet Thread of Redemption pointing to Jesus that is woven throughout all of the Hebrew Scriptures. His writing is beautiful and makes you want to draw near to God. Tiegree communicates the key to what life is all about. Bravo!
Here are a couple of quotes I liked so much that I sent them to friends:
"God's highest goal for us isn't our obedience, our service, our testimony for Him, or any other behavioral outcome. It's that we adore Him. Yes, love has implications in all other areas, but first and foremost, our relationship with God is a matter of the heart. If we don't love Him fully, we're missing our purpose." (90 Days Thru the Bible: A Devotional Journey, p. 33)
"We are not just travelers on a long, hard road to our destination. We carry evidence of that destination within us. Whenever God's presence fills us to overflowing, we bring glimpses of the destination into the journey itself. Wherever we see something that doesn't look like the Kingdom, we're to bring the Kingdom into that place. Though in one sense the Kingdom will come, in another sense it has already come and still comes--not just to us but through us. The builder of the city isn't waiting for 'someday.' He's working even now" (90 Days Thru the Bible: A Devotional Journey, Ezekiel, p.105).
The only drawback is that I wish it had an encouragement to actually read the Bible all the way through as a challenging yet rewarding next step [This product might be a good one: [ASIN:031093351X The Bible in 90 Days: Cover to Cover in 12 Pages a Day (New International Version)]]. I also would have liked to have more application-oriented kinds of discussion questions at the end of each day. Other than this, it is a great contribution toward helping people toward biblical literacy and developing a vital, intimate relationship with God.
