From a dad: 3 heartbreaks and an amazing healing

This book broke my heart three times, and then healed all of it. And I didn’t even buy it for myself.

I am dad of a teenage girl getting ready to go to high school, and I bought the book for her as a gift. So the first time my heart broke, it was for the author, as she so candidly expressed her struggles with the prices she paid for her popularity.
The second time my heart broke was for my daughter because I know that she is going to face the very same temptations as she enters high school and I see and hear the seed of these temptations already as middle school comes to close.

My biggest temptation was to give this book with speech, but fortunately I read through it before I gave it to my daughter and I decided to let the author’s words speak and not add any parental subtext to an already well-communicated message, or mess up an extremely poignant and heartfelt message with some added-on lecture of my own. So I’m watching my daughter read it and letting her absorb it on her own terms. This is proving wise.

As for my third heartbreak, it’s for women I know and even dated. I’m a single dad, and I can’t express to you the number of women who I know or dated that found a path similar to the author in high school and have never been able to authentically get away from it. They’re still trying to be popular in their 30’s and 40’s.

The healing here is amazing, as it always is when it’s truly spiritual, and I hope that teenage girls and older women (with broken teenage pasts), and even a few dads who just want to understand and love, all read this book. Just remember dads, let the book speak, or maybe I should write let Him speak because He’s got an awesome plan for her.

A Much Needed Message for Teenage Girls

I may be in my mid-30's now, but I remember my heartaches and teenage mistakes like they were yesterday. Maybe if I had read such an honest testimony as is given in this book, those mistakes could have been avoided.

Movies show us the glamorous side of being popular, going to parties, drinking, and having casual sex. In her book, Tindell shares her story in the hopes that teenage girls can understand the other side not commonly talked about. She wishes she had known "not more cold facts and statistics, but more of the emotional reality...The challenge is that while the feelings are real, they are fleeting, and the pain that follows is not." She says making the right choices "might mean you're lonely today, but it also might mean you aren't scarred tomorrow...It's true that God can bring beauty from a pile of ashes, but rising from the ashes is not easy or fun - it's so much better to avoid that type of death." Tindell then shares about her Christian faith and how Jesus has made all the difference in her life. She says that her desires weren't the problem, but the way she was filling them was. I'm sure it is not easy to bare your soul for the world to see, but in doing so I believe that Tindell will be able to connect to girls where they are, and then show them a better way.

I would recommend this book to all teenage girls and the adults who love them. It may keep some girls from making the same mistakes. It may help parents find the right words to explain "why" not to make certain choices. It may also allow others to develop an understanding and compassion for girls trying to navigate through all the emotions and decisions that come during the teenage years.

On a side note - I think it would be beneficial if Tindell's parents wrote a book. According to her, they provided a loving, stable home and were able to show her unconditional love even through her rebellion and bad decisions. They must have a ton of wisdom to share!

For Christian Teens Who Want to be Popular

Funny thing about being in high school. A few years ago, I went back to my old high school. Since I had lived out of state for years and this was pre-Facebook, I had lost touch with almost everyone. As we stood around reminiscing about our past, I had an epiphany. Almost everyone in high school thinks they are not popular!

As I heard people I would have identified as some of the most popular kids in our class talk about being teased or not feeling like they fit in, I realized maybe the whole popular thing is more about learning to be comfortable in your own skin. Perhaps it is about realizing there is no "normal" person and being different can really be just great (in healthy, godly ways of course). Maybe our shared angst was actually more about discovering who we were than about how popular we thought we were.

I was curious to read the book Popular: Boys, Booze, and Jesus by Tindell Baldwin. The author was raised in the stereotypical "good" Christian home, but went through a period of serious rebellion in high school. She tells the story of her slide into alcohol, drugs and sex as well as finding her way back to God. Along the way she shares with readers the painful lessons she learned and the Biblical truths she wished she had heeded.

I am really torn about books like this. As a former "good" girl, I find them in some ways to have an almost opposite effect on me. Was I really the only teen left that was trying to abide by God's commands? My daughter, who is probably a bit more grounded than I was at her age, just finds them annoying. She says she really has no desire to spend time reading about other people's bad decisions. She would rather read books encouraging her to stay on the good path with positive examples.

I do think this book can help girls who are already on the wrong path. Perhaps this book can convince them there is a way out of the misery their bad choices have created. Instead of thinking there is no hope, Baldwin's story can serve as a road map for them to find their way back to God.

If you are the parent of a girl who is perhaps tempted by alcohol, drugs and/or sexual activity, I would seriously consider all of the possible angles before sharing this book with your child. I know in some cases teens are encouraged to continue sinning, because books like this show them they can change their mind later and come back (in their minds) relatively unscathed. The author does try to describe the scars she received from her bad choices. I am just not sure a tempted teen will really understand the full impact of what she is saying.

On the other hand, I do think this book can be very instructive for parents. Although the author may not even fully realize it herself, it does show what her parents did that helped and what they did that actually pushed her more in the wrong direction. I would imagine it could also open a few parental eyes to how their teens are working them to participate in unwise activities.

Perhaps the strongest part of the book is towards the end when she discusses the impact of pre-marital sex on her eventual marriage. She does one of the best jobs I have read of painting a clear picture of how having sex before marriage changes what your marriage could have been in very real ways.

My bottom line? This book isn't best for every teen. As a parent, I would suggest you read it before offering it to your teen. You will probably learn some things and get some tips on sharing the consequences of sinful behavior with your teen. Then talk with your teen and use your best judgment before sharing the book. This book may be what your child needs to be stronger or it may discourage her even more. Only you and your child can really make that call. I am glad that this book is there for those who will find its lessons help them re-connect with God.

The Biblical Prophecy

For the last twenty-years, there has been a slew of "apocalypse" or "end of times" fiction & non-fiction books being published. I have read a few of these books, including the Left Behind series. You don't have to be a believer to become interested in the book of Revelation, as I know a few non-believers that have read a few books on the "end of times."

Released last week to bookstores is Agents of the Apocalypse by Dr. David Jeremiah. It isn't his first book based on Revelation, but it is his first "end times" book that uses fictionalized stories "to drive the message of Revelation into the human heart." The author received assistance from Thomas Williams with the ten fictional stories - The Exile, The Martyrs, The 144,000, The Two Witnesses, The Dragon, The Beast from the Sea, The Beast from the Earth, The Victor, The King and The Judge. Each chapter is divided into two sections - the fictional story followed by "The Scripture Behind The Story."

With the use of fictional stories, the author is able to explain the main events that occurred in the Bible to believers and non-believers alike. This is also a great way to explain the meaning behind scriptures and tell the stories that contains the biblical prophecy.

With all the tabloids, cable news and news blogs, a person looking for real facts on the apocalypse will be really confused with all the misinterpretation of the Bible. Dr. David Jeremiah cleverly puts together an unique book that explains how the apocalypse was told in the scriptures. I have read a few other biblical prophecy non-fiction titles, but each book was based on the authors' point-of-views of what the apocalypse means to them. Overall, Agents of the Apocalypse is one of the better books written on the subject, which gives the truth to the readers.

A great way to understand the "END TIMES!"

I have for all my 77+ years had trouble understanding the book of Revelation with all it's symbolism and description of various beasts and other players in the "end times." The approach here to create a fictional story line that is in today's terms - fictional but based on the scripture as it could conceivably occur, really makes the illusive language of the text understandable. It also helps tremendously to have each chapter of the "fictional but plausible account" followed by Dr Jeremiah's insight and interpretation of the scriptures which have puzzled me for years become even more understandable.. He is indeed a delight to read and a most knowledgeable minister. I did this reading as a part of a Bible based book study with several devoted friends. We were so impressed we ordered the DVD's and have shared the experience so far through the DVD's with two other groups. Reading his writing is great but seeing and hearing him deliver it is an awesome tool I recommend to study groups and church classes.

Seller is on point and the book is even sharper! Dr. David Jeremiah is accurate in his writing of this presentation/study of the Book of Revelation. A fiction/non fiction book which lines the Word of God up with and/or in fictional, yet Scripturally based, stories; in which at the end of each chapter, he has a section called 'the Scripture behind the story' where he parallels the fiction of the story with the non fiction and truths of the Biblical Scripture. A very good read, and even better, a familiarization to/with one of the most (for many) daunting Books of the Bible... Dr. Jeremiah also has the book - the Agents of Babylon where he reveals prophecies of Daniel (which if ya up on ya walks with the Word, you'll find many parallels between the revelations of Daniel (the coming of Christ) and the revelations John rec'vd (concerning the return of Christ).

The best written and acted tv series since Angel and Buffy

This was one of the finest television series on the air. The writing was superb, the characters were believable, and the storylines were to die for.

If you loved the Touched by an Angel series, you will enjoy this one.

The main character, a high school girl named Joan talks to God all day every day as she sorts through the pains of growing up. What I love about this show is that God appears as every single race, color, creed and religion - from a middle aged chess player to a Gothic punk rocker. Joan never knows what God will look like, but has blind faith God is always there.

I also love that she does not always appreciate the advice she is given and gets annoyed with God from time to time. I can relate to not liking the answer I get to my prayers. I don't always get what I ask for. But I always get what I need. Just like Joan.

Joan of Arcadia, sophisticated, witty,

An entirely believable 16 year old girl with an entirely believable family, warts and all. The program handles complexity with great sophistication, often letting complex issues stay unresolved, forcing the viewer to reach her/his own conclusions. Manages to be spiritual without being theological; avoids confusing religion with spirituality. A definite viewpoint about God is here, without any attempt to proselytize. The best program I have ever watched dealing with spirituality. All the main characters are fine actors and the interactions with Joan's family and friends are witty, occasionally sad, always asking profound questions.

Currently, one of the best shows on TV

This show is certainly different from what we see on TV. The formula may be typical, but the approach to this theme is very original. Although it deals with Joan (Amber Tamblyn) talking to God, not everything is sweet and pink. Tragedy occurs, her family has to live with many ordeals in order to stay togethes. She can even be considered insane at some point because "talking" to God does not provide alla the answers needed. I fact sometimes it's confusing. The acting is very good, and the story very promising, so it's not a surprise that it has been a very popular show when TV is being ambushed by "reality" shows. I think Joan of Arcadia is here for the long run so if you haven't seen it, this is your chance to enjoy a very good show, and if you already see it, you can certainly enjoy them again.

I can't rate the contents of the DVD yet but I hope it's full of extras!

Excellent Read For Men

There are few things I like less than Christian books and programs that offer easy answers, for nowhere does God promise that living for Him will be easy. It seems, though, that the Christian world just laps these books up. Those dealing with Christian living seem to be particularly prone to "easy-answerism." Fortunately bestselling author Bill Perkins avoids this concern in his new book entitled Six Battles Every Man Must Win. Based on the Biblical account of King David's mighty men, this book seeks to address the cultural bullies that continually attempt to steal men's hearts. Perkins offers insight on how men can set their sights on God's will for their lives and escape the destructive behavior that is keeping them from being warriors for Him.

It's for men who believe they were created to be warriors but aren't sure how to fight or what they should be fighting for. It's for men who want to lock on their purpose for living. For many years our society has told men to cultivate their gentler side and to suppress masculine distinctives. After many years this influence has begun to shape men's identities. Satan builds on this doubt, this disillusion, doing all he can to convince men that they are not warriors at all and that they can play no part in the spiritual battle that rages in this world. Six Battles Every Man Must Win serves as a wake-up call to men who cannot or will not see this conflict.

"We must wake up. We can no longer deny the reality of the angelic conflict in which we're combatants. We have an enemy who hates us and seeks our destruction. We must discover the secret of masculine strength that's rooted in Christ."

Churches, rather than combating the emasculation of men, has contributed by molding the church to create an atmosphere that appeals to women more than men. This process began when men started to forsake their role as the spiritual leaders in the homes and it soon spread to the church. Even Jesus has been given an "extreme makeover" so that those characteristics he no-doubt possessed that women object to have been downplayed in favor of His gentleness and compassion. As this has happened, the church has ceased teaching godly masculinity so men are unable to resist our society's misconceptions about manliness. The two greatest deceptions are that you are what you own and that you medicate pain with sex. When men lose sight of God's standards for manliness and adopt the world's standards, they give Satan exactly what he is looking for - their hearts. So what are men to do? They are to stand their ground! "Recognizing you are engaged in a spiritual battle and deciding to stand your ground are crucial first steps."
The subsequent six chapters outline six battles every man needs to face in order to win this spiritual battle. The battles are: Fight for your identity, fight for personal holiness, fight for your family, fight through pain, fight for your friends and fight for a strong faith. Each chapter is based around the struggle and triumph faced by one of David's mighty men. Perkins draws practical, Biblically-sound application from each of their victories. The author avoids attempting to provide easy answers. Like any battle, the battle for holiness of character can be won only through great effort. Instead of easy answers, he provides a solid base of application the reader can build on as he acknowledges and then joins the fight.
The book closes not with final answers, but with a final challenge. "...enlist right now to fight in the six battles and discover firsthand how God can transform you and use you to strengthen your family and other men. The battle is raging as you read these words...Grab your sword and enter the fight." The book ends with a challenge to begin living a life of greater holiness before God; a challenge to commit my life, my time and my efforts to His cause. It ends with a call for me to be the warrior God intended me to be so that with His help and for His glory I can win the battle that rages all around me and defeat the one who seeks to steal my heart.
If I was forced to find a complaint about this book I would say that I was a bit disappointed that it was merely 140 pages long. Several of the chapters provided only an introduction to a topic that I would have liked the author to examine in greater detail. Of course many of the chapters could (and sometimes have been) books of their own so this is probably not practical. I would also have liked to see more exposition of the passage the book is based on. Though most believers have some level of knowledge about David's life, I'm sure many of the references will be lost to readers. Before reading the book I would recommend reading at least 2 Samuel 23: 8-23. For the full story read most of 1 and 2 Samuel.
Two things that initially drew me to Perkins' books are his honesty and passion. He draws on many incidents from his own life, being sufficiently honest to use his experiences as examples of behavior others should avoid. He writes with such passion that I could feel the genuine desire he has to see men emerge as the warriors God intended them to be. His passion is contagious.
A book that provides many "aha" moments (as promised on the cover) as well as many opportunities for reflection and discussion, I would recommend this book to men who are seeking to honor God with their lives and are willing to accompany Him into battle.

A Woman's Perspective

I love this book. My husband owns it and I was intrigued by the title so I picked it up. My first thought after I read it was that every church should buy this book in case loads and give it out to every man in their congregation. This is exactly the book that I was hoping would be written. I talk to alot of women, and I keep hearing over and over again a heartfelt desire to see our husbands quit the complacency and passivity that seems to plague the modern Christian man.
Bill Perkins' book is an easy read with great stories to illustrate each point. He doesn't use technical language or deal in theory. Every point is clearly made with practical application that can be implemented today. This is definitely a book for any man, especially the men in my life. And, I think that women should read it too. It has certainly given me a window into the way a man's mind works and the struggles that they face. I feel that I can pray more effectively now for what my husband is facing. I'm ready for the men in the church to take up the fight and be strong leaders again for the sake of all of us!

A decent book.... a little light on practical information

"Six Battles Every Man Must Win" by Bill Perkins is focused on the spiritual battles men must face every day. The six battles listed include:

1. Fight for your identity

2. Fight for personal holiness

3. Fight for your family

4. Fight through pain

5. Fight for your friends

6. Fight for a strong faith

Each of the battles made sense, although I couldn't really relate to the family fight as I'm not married. However I'm sure that many men could relate to it.

I was most impressed with the chapter on fighting through pain. Bill nails the internal struggle that Christian men go through when dealing with pain. Temptation always starts with a baby step, disguised to seem like nothing at all. However it always leads to a slippery slope.

I enjoy Bill's idea of "buddyship" or the need to have male friends. Bill lists a number of reasons why it is important to have male friends, but like the majority of the book, he doesn't give practical advice regarding how to develop relationships. I really would have liked to have seen more practical advice regarding what to do, not just what I should do.

Regardless, this book is a good easy read. I didn't find it life-changing but it was a good review of issues that need to be dealt with as a man. 4 out of 5 stars.

Feel duped by Kevin Malarkey .....

Following reading comments online by Alex Malarkey's mother, Beth, I feel duped by his father, Kevin. I would recommend others do your own research to learn the truth behind this book. According to Mrs Malarkey, she nor Alex ever endorsed, approved, or received a dime of profit from this book, and it seems there were exaggerations and inaccuracies throughout it's content. So very sad.

About the Author
Jerry B. Best End Times Book I've Read

After reading all of the Left Behind Series, I found this book at a friend's house and decided to read up on my Bible prophecy. Revelations is such a hard thing to understand that this book gave me an opportunity to understand where in the Bible all the info for the LB series comes from. The information also cleared up numerous questions that I had about the end times. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants a deeper knowledge of Bible prophecy and its applications to our Christian walk and our world today.

A wonderful Witnessing Tool

As a historian and a bit of a student of prophecy, while also maintaining a bit of "taking things with a grain of salt"...I had been a bit standoffish toward prophecy writings for awhile...then the Left Behind series came about ...and I questioned myself and my faith, and I was restored with realizations about my life...even as a "so called Christian"...now, I must say that this book changed me even more... making me realize how much trouble the world is... how many antichrists there are in the church, in government, in the world at large... and quite possibly that one main AntiChrist is out there...
I was so startled by reading this book, I bought almost all my coworkers a copy...and gave out tapes of this book to the rest...

A Great Overview

This book is designed especially for readers of the Left Behind series. It is a great book for those who accepted Jesus as a result of the books and want to find out more about Biblical prophecy. For those who want to start studying prophecy and have never read Left Behind this book is also a great springboard into the topic and lays a good foundation for further study. Prepare to be motivated!
