Hooray for parents of college-age students!

This is a GREAT READ. Having read Chediak’s previous book made for college students ("Thriving at College"), this is the perfect companion to it…only for parents! He covers everything parents need to know before sending their kids out to college. Now as a graduate student, I only wish this would have come sooner so my parents would have avoided a few headaches. Here, Chediak literally covers everything you’ll need to know. But most importantly he addresses what you can do NOW to make sure your teen is on his/her journey to becoming more Christ-like and having a biblical worldview….and as a result succeed in any endeavor they take on.

Chediak guides the reader (parent) into having conversations with their teens about character, faith, relationships, finances, academics, and making the college decision. He even has a section on saving for college! Believe me parents (guardians, leaders), you make a HUGE difference in your teens lives…& what they will make of college. Buy this book (& maybe even the other one, “Thriving at College,” for your son/daughter). You won’t regret it.

Great practical and helpful book about an incredibly challenging subject.

As a pastor I found Alex's writing clear and Biblical - from front to back it's grounded and incredibly relevant. Alex does such a great job of pointing parents towards wise and practical advice. He doesn't dictate a one size fits all parenting model but instead gives winsome advice that enables parents to apply God's word exactly where they are. Whether you read it straight through or just a few chapters at a time this book brights clarity and wise counsel to the often murky waters that parents find themselves in especially if they're thinking about these things for the first time. I'm really glad to recommend this book to the parents of the high school students that I work with - with so many issues to face it's good to have a resource like this to help us think about what it means to train up young men and women to be committed followers of Jesus Christ during their college years and beyond.

Excellent, Practical, and Encouraging

As a pastor and a parent of young kids, I found this book to be a great resource. This is not only a helpful book about preparing our teens for college, but this is a book for parenting in general! Whether you plan to send your kids to college someday or not, this book is full of thought provoking ways to reach the heart of our children with the truth of the Gospel and how to build lasting relationships, responsibility, and communication with our kids.

As a pastor, I believe this book is a great resource that I will use for many years to help inform and encourage not only the parents at the church, but also the young kids and teens. This is a book, I believe, needs to be on every pastor's bookshelf and in every church bookstore.

Get this book and start reading it right away. You won't be disappointed.

Awesome

This Bible is so easy to understand. I have much experience with the NIV, TNIV, RSV, ESV, Message, KJV, JB, etc and this one is BY FAR, the easiest to understand. There are three types of Bibles out there: Word-for-Word translations (KJV, ESV, etc) , Thought-for-Thought translations(NIV, TNIV, NLT, etc) and Paraphrase translations (Message, JB, etc). WFW translations are typically sturdy or slanted in their usage of language. Just as we have phrases like "he has fallen asleep forever" (i. e. "died"), so is the Bible full of such things and using a WFW translation makes things like that difficult to understand. Since it was written thousands of years ago, we don't understand their common phrases. TFT translations try to communicate the actual thought that was communicated, but they do consider the actual words (Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic) used. Lastly, Paraphrases basically just communicate the primary idea of the text and sometimes don't give much attention to the original language. With that said, in my opinion, it is best to have a Bible in between the WFW and TFT section. The NLT is just that. It's easy to understand and you can connect it to the original languages. This bible is so handy. The introductions to the books are fantastic. They tell the reader the who, what, when, where and why in detail (which is crucial to understanding). The study notes are good and the diagrams and maps are very helpful. One of my favorite features of this book is that in the back, it outlines 100 OT and 100 NT words. Actually, it is as if the writers did a mini word study for you. I am using this Bible in my youth ministry of 6-12th grade students. It is easy for them to understand, but it also provides great opportunity to growth. Lastly, I use this Bible in my own personal study. I am a Christian College graduate and I am currently working on my Master's in General Bible and this is my BIble of choice.

The NLT Study Bible is an exceptional work

Introduction to the NLT Study Bible
In the Introduction, there is a NLT Study Bible Features Guide. There is also a six page Master Timeline which covers the historical period from creation to approximately AD 330. The timeline is quite detailed and gives an overview of what was happening during the periods covered by books of the Bible. Not only does it list the Kings of Israel and Judah, but it also covers the kings of Assyria, Babylonia, Media-Persia and Rome.

The introduction also includes a list of NLT Study Bible Contributors. I'm no scholar and my library is limited, but several names managed to catch my eye: Daniel Block, Tremper Longman III, John Oswalt, Grant Osborne, Robert Stein, Mark Strauss, Douglas Moo, Sean Harrison and Philip Comfort.

Book and Section Introductions
The book introductions cover the usual Setting, Summary, Authorship, Setting and Date information to be found in most Study Bibles. There are several features of the Book Introductions which stood out to me as special. Each book introduction includes a map showing the geographic region covered in the book. There is a timeline for each book.

As in most Study Bibles, there is an Outline. The NLT Study Bible takes the Outline a step or two further than most in that it is a running outline. I have found this to be a very helpful feature. To quote from the Features Guide:

"Each book includes an outline with up to three levels of headings. In the introduction, we provide the first level of the outline to give the reader an overview. The full outline is embedded in the NLT text as running headings."

The Book Introductions also include a Further Reading section which has book recommendations for further study. In skimming the recommendations from several introductions, the books seem to be solid. I even own several of them so of course I like the lists.

In addition to the Book Introductions, there are Section Introductions. These include:

Old Testament
The Pentateuch
Historical Books
Books of Poetry and Wisdom
Books of the Prophets
New Testament
The Four Gospels
Letters of Paul
Paul's Letters to Timothy and Titus

There are also other informative articles of an introductory or chronological nature throughout, including:

Archaeology and Sources for OT Background
Abraham to Joshua
Time of the Judges
Israel's Monarch
Israel's Exile and Return
Life of Jesus
Harmony of the Four Gospels
Apostolic Age
Time After the Apostles

Miscellaneous Features in the Text
Scattered throughout the text are numerous helpful features including additional maps, genealogies, additional timelines, various charts and illustrations. You have to really try hard to get lost in this Study Bible. They keep everything pretty close at hand.

I have found the notes to be surprisingly relevant to the text. I say "surprisingly" because in other Study Bibles it seems that a rather large percentage of notes seem to be more filler than helpful. The notes in this Bible have been more consistently helpful to me personally.

Theme Notes and Person Profiles
Throughout the text there are notes regarding important themes and people. For instance, looking in the Gospel According to John there are numerous notes and profiles including:

The Word
John the Baptist
Miraculous Signs
Nicodemus
Believing
Living Water
The Jewish Leaders
That gets me through chapter 5.

Cross-References
I have found the cross-references to be more useful than that of most other Bibles. The references appear to be more consistently related to the idea of the verse rather than an individual word which is what was claimed in the introduction. Using them I have found it to be true. Parallel passages are clearly marked with parallel lines(//). Verses in the New Testament which are quotes of the Old Testament are marked with an asterisk (*).

Word Study System
Located within the cross-reference column are references to the Hebrew and Greek dictionaries in the back of the Study Bible. They are referenced to the Strong's Concordance numbers. The dictionaries include 100 Hebrew words and 100 Greek words. I wish there were more words included but I also want to be able to carry the NLT Study Bible without throwing out my back if you know what I mean. I would consider the words included to be rather significant, relatively speaking. The definitions are fairly broad in scope and at the end of each definition are a list of Biblical references where the words can be found. This has been a favorite, and helpful, feature of mine.

Subject Index
Following the Hebrew/Greek dictionaries in the back of the back there is a very comprehensive Subject Index which takes up 142 pages, slightly less than the TNIV Study Bible's Topics Index and Notes Index combined.

Dictionary / Concordance
The Dictionary/Concordance may be another favorite. Not only is it a concordance but it actually does contain definitions of many of the words, words from the KJV are so marked to aid someone (wisely) transitioning to the NLT, and brief biographical sketches of people.

Maps
In addition to the maps in the Introductions and in the text, there is a good collection of maps at the end of the Study Bible. There is no index included. However, given the other maps mentioned having an index in the back might be overkill. While I appreciate the inclusion of the extra maps in the back, I find myself using the Introduction and in text maps far more frequently as I find them much more convenient.

Concluding Remarks
Overall, I have found the NLT Study Bible to be an exceptional work. Beyond overall, each individual part of the work has truly impressed me. Perhaps I'm biased. When it was first announced and the features were listed on the NLT Study Bible website it seemed to me that someone had been reading my mind as to what features I had always wanted. It's almost like we were made for each other.

I give the NLT Study Bible my most enthusiastic endorsement and gladly recommend it to all.

A Review On The Kindle Version

First off, let me say how happy I am that they finally made a NLT Study Bible version for the Kindle! So much more transportable than the brick I have! And the Kindle Version has EVERYTHING the NLT Study Bible has: maps, in-text commentary notes (easy to navigate to on kindle) as well as the scholarly theme notes and person profiles.

FEEL: the feel for the NLT Study Bible is basically what it looks like in the hardcover version. On the kindle, i'd say this is a detriment, because while the NLT SB Kindle version LOOKS LIKE the NLT SB hardcover version, that's not what I want! I want the text to flow nicely like i'm reading a book (like the ESV Study Bible does), not have the text look like a textbook. Don't get me wrong, its very readable, but its just not as pleasant looking as it could be.

SEARCH: awesome. just like the ESV Holy Bible and ESV Study Bible, you can navigate by going to the table of contents & clicking OR going to the index and using search terms like "mt 1:15" to get where you want to go. What makes the NLT SB so hardcore is that its theme notes & concordance are also index searchable, which means if I want to find out more about what the "day of the lord" is in the Bible, i just search that in the index section and not only get a concordance about where that phrase shows up in the bible, but i also get the scholarly mini-essays written about the day of the lord and what it means. awesome!

In-text commentary is also easily clickable (as it is in the ESV SB). you just look for the underlined verse number, click it, and it takes you to the commentary section for that verse and the ones around it, to get back to the text you just click "back." very simple and easy to use.

Altogether this Bible includes all the scholarly work of the NLT Study Bible right on your Kindle. And its a leg up better than the ESV Study Bible because of its inclusions of in-depth, scholarly theme notes on almost any biblical subject, and its in-depth person profiles of the Bible.

4/5 stars for having a textbook feel, but still having all the NLT Study Bible has to offer.

PS: just a friendly reminder that this is the UPDATED New Living Translation which is truer to the original greek and hebrew of the biblical text than some of the older NLT Versions (like NLT Life Application Bible). So don't rip on the accuracy of this Bible, because its good. It's a "dynamic equivalent translation" which means it tries to be literal while at the same time trying to show you what the text actually means in a readable, modern way. for instance, 1 Peter 1:13 says "Gird the loins of your mind!" (some NASB translations) while the NLT would say, "Think clearly!"

Not a Book I'd Recommend

More and more Christians are "using a mouse to find a spouse" with good success. Yet in spite of the growing popularity of online dating, many singles still hesitate to sign up out of fear of becoming tangled in the unknowns that may await them on the other side of the world-wide web.

It is for those singles that Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott have written their little book dot.com Dating: Finding your right someone online--Avoiding the liars, losers, and freaks. As psychologists with years of experience in marriage and family relationships, the Parrotts describe themselves in the book as being "dedicated to seeing the divorce rate reduced dramatically in our lifetime and seeing stronger and more vibrant marriages, particularly among Christians." They are enthusiastic supporters of online dating when it takes place in the context of faith-based websites designed to carefully match singles seeking serious relationships. In the introduction of the book, the Parrotts explain that through their research they became so convinced of the merits of such dating sites that they cofounded one of their own, MyRightSomeone.com.

In Part One of dot.com Dating, the authors deal with a number of myths often connected with online dating--the idea that it carries an embarrassing stigma, that it's reserved for the desperate, that only weirdos populate such sites, etc. As they cover these topics, the Parrotts provide wise advice by encouraging readers to check their motives before signing up, to avoid poor means of decision making (e.g.,"putting out a fleece"), and to avoid isolation by seeking involvement with Christian community as well as by soliciting biblical guidance from church leaders during the dating process. Along the way, the Parrotts share numerous statistics and interesting anecdotes, all of which make for quick and enjoyable reading.

The second part of the book consists of a series of chapters designed to help readers answer the question, "Is Internet dating right for me?" It is at this point that the book really breaks down for me, because although I'm sure the authors' enthusiastic promotion of online dating is sincere, it does bear a strong resemblance to a sales pitch. The Parrotts describe online dating as the solution for those "tired of waiting for love," the way to "instantly and dramatically increase your chances for love," a way "to use time and money wisely" and to "safeguard yourself from emotional pain and danger."

Although I could quibble with a number of details about these claims, there is an even more pressing concern about the Parrotts' portrayal of online dating. On more than one occasion, they state that online dating "puts you in the driver's seat" and they emphasize that online dating will increase your chances of meeting your future mate. Although the authors also reference God's will in the book, the overwhelming impression given in dot.com Dating is that online dating can give you control over finding "the one."

For example, in Chapter Seven, the Parrotts say:

If you're growing weary of waiting to find your right someone, you don't have to keep waiting. Online dating has little to do with waiting. It puts you in the driver's seat, helping you to be proactive about the fate of your dating life. You don't have to sit home alone on Friday nights. And you don't have to date duds just because your options are drying up. Online dating can broaden your prospects and help you find the someone you've been looking for.

Such counsel can be incredibly dangerous for the Christian single who is already struggling to trust the Lord while she waits on His plan. Waiting is an ongoing part of the Christian life, and as many women who waited longer for their wedding day than they would have planned will tell you, "It was all worth the wait." Of course, I agree that singles shouldn't be encouraged to sit at home and wait for God to deliver a husband to their door, but they should never be tempted to believe that the fate of their dating life is ultimately in their hands. I was disappointed by the Parrotts' failure to emphasize the sovereignty and providence of God in regard to the timing of marriage.

Another issue of particular concern is the fact that the Parrotts encourage women to feel comfortable in the role of the initiator:

Online dating puts you in the driver's seat. This is particularly important for women. You no longer have to feel as if you're sitting around passively waiting for a guy to make the move. It's cool for anyone to initiate contact when it comes to online dating.

While I realize that the issue of initiation becomes more complicated in the online dating world, I would still counsel a single woman to give men a chance to take up their God-given role as leaders even before the relationship begins. God won't allow a woman to miss "the one" simply because she chose to trust Him to work out His will in His way. Regardless of how the culture may change, biblical roles for men and women retain timeless importance.

I believe the Parrotts have good motives in sharing their belief that online dating makes it easier for singles to meet the right person and establish successful marriages, but their neglect of God's sovereignty and the vital role of the gospel in their counsel on dating and marriage is a glaring problem. Yes, science and psychology can make predictions about the success or failure of marriage relationships based on moral values, personality traits, and communication skills, but what they cannot do is to reckon the incalculable difference that God's grace makes within the covenant of marriage.

In the realms of dating and marriage, we must never place our hopes for success on anything (not even the most sophisticated technology or scientific findings) other than the gospel of Jesus Christ. Only He can transform sinners into soulmates. In conclusion, while I do believe God uses online dating to bring certain couples together, I am unfortunately unable to recommend dot.com Dating as a guide to be used during that process.

Being single, I was eager to review this book. I couldn't believe that the first couple to meet online was in 1982, I was one-years-old! And the couple is still married today. This story and other stories in the book will give you hope in finding true love. Here's one tip, when writing a profile, just be honest about whom you truly are. What makes dot.com Dating different than other books about online dating is that this is from a Christian perspective. The only complaint that I have for the book, is at the very end, the authors are pushing their own online dating website onto the reader. I can't tell it they wrote the book to encourage people to find love or promote their site. Despite this setback, I enjoyed reading the true-life stories and recommend this to others.

Gift-sized book. Is it really needed?

What is your opinion of online dating? You've heard of e-harmony.com right and a number of others; do you think they are for real? Is it possible that there is a stigma about "having to resort" to online dating?

Drs Les and Leslie Parrott want to dispel any negative connotations that come with dating on the Internet with their book, Dot.com Dating.

This is a very small book. It's pretty much a gift-size book that dives into the myths about online dating, questions you should ask each dating site and ways to know if you're ready to use online dating.

The myths include:

Using online dating means you're desperate
Only liars, losers and freaks use those sites
Online dating goes against God's purposes

Some of the questions to ask are:

Does the site help you go past a picture and paragraph
Is the site lined up with your beliefs
Is it dedicated to helping you find true love

And then the kicker comes at the end.

These authors have created their own online dating service and suggest that you use their new website to find your future spouse. Isn't great that they would offer this nice advice before asking you to patron their site?

AMAZING Historical Fiction that will touch your heart!

Francine Rivers is my favorite modern author. Since I discovered her books about 2 years ago, I have become spoiled with amazingly well-written, life-changing, inspirational fiction. All of her historical books are so well researched that you feel like you're truly there. This is no fiction that was written quickly... it was well thought out and will change your life.

Even though all of that is so true, I was wary to read "Sons of Encouragement." That's because I love reading about women... I can relate to them so much more than men, naturally! But I wound up at the library hungry for something new from Francine Rivers or George MacDonald (my favorite non-modern author). All they had to choose from was "Sons of Encouragement" or... "Sons of Encouragement." So, I chose.

And my low expectations were so off! The fact that the main characters of these books are men didn't do anything to diminish my enjoyment of these stories. They drew me back to the beginning of God's word and to the Stories of these 5 men who really were just regular men but who were chosen by God for something great. I love Miss River's books because they show you so clearly God's plan, His goodness, His sovereignty... all in a new way that will make God and the people whose lives we see in the pages of the bible so much more real to you. "Sons of Encouragement" includes 5 novellas that were originally published as separate books. Here, you have them all together which is much more convenient. All of their stories come together to make one marvelous story.

The book includes the stories of Aaron, Caleb, Jonathan, Amos, and Silas. None of these men are as well-known as the ones they encouraged (Moses, Joshua, David, Israel, and Paul) and we don't hear as much about them as others. Each of these stories remain as true to the bible as possible, and the author combines accurate history and culture with her own imagination to bring their stories alive and touch your heart.

A blessing for just about anyone

Francine Rivers is my favorite author, but her writing is largely geared toward female audiences. I bought Sons of Encouragement for a guy friend, and he's hooked! It's a great change of pace to get male readers more involved. This series and A Lineage of Grace are incredibly helpful in understanding the Old Testament and early Christianity as one fluid and flawless plan rather than chopped up Bible stories.

Life-changing

I LOVE Francis Rivers' books. This one is special to me because we read those stories in the Bible over and over and never really question the people's motives or what it would have been like to be in their shoes. Rivers gives a very good idea of what it would have been like. I'll never read the stories of Aaron, Caleb, Jonathan, Amos, or Silas the same again. Each story taught me something different about myself and my walk with the Lord. I highly recommend it.

A Good Salve For the Hurting

The problem of pain. It's a hard topic and it's been tackled by wiser men than he, but Dobson gives it his best shot here and does a surprisingly nice job. This book won't blow away anyone's mind with new philosophical or theological insights, but it does give the average Christian a really good handbook on the subject of suffering. Why bad things do happen to Christians, what the Bible says about this, what the Bible DOESN'T say about it, and where God is in the midst of the suffering and confusion. As Dobson says, it's virtually guaranteed that every Christian will, at one time or another in their life, experience a tragedy that is powerful enough to rock their faith to its core. It is in that time when we need to be assured of what exactly it is that we believe about God, His love, and His promises. This book is a great preparation for that eventuality, and a really good salve for the Christian who currently is wounded and in need of being picked up. Four stars, and a recommendation to those who can't find a copy of Philip Yancey's Disappointment With God.

A great resource for anyone struggling with God & life.

Although I'm not a huge Dobson fan, I think that he really accomplishes a lot with this book. It is very readable and is extremely helpful in getting one to realize that although God doesn't "make sense" all of the time, we are still able to trust him and rely on him as a totally loving & caring God.

One significant point that Dobson makes is that it is unrealistic for us to expect God to answer all of our prayers and make life easy for us. If God answered all Christian's prayers immediately, we Christians would never die, get sick, lose jobs, have cars break down, etc.! Everybody would want to become a Christian just for the benefits! God isn't a sugar daddy who caters to our desires - he is a sovereign God who ALLOWS things to happen to us, usually for our own development & growth

Don't judge a book by its title.

Rich Froning: CrossFit Champion
A biography

I enjoyed reading about Rich Froning but only for a little while. It was interesting reading about his family and background and how he grew up and the book is at its best when Mr. Froning takes you through the games and competitions themselves.

It was not what I was expecting. There is nothing in this book about learning to be come a better athlete (mentally or physically) or a better CrossFit(er). In short, this is a very short biography with a lot of Born Again Christian themes.

Froning is a two time CrossFit Games Champion. He has beaten a lot of other people in some tough events. There is nothing detailed in the book about how he trains or what he eats. Just general stuff like:
"I work out five times a day...based on how I feel...I eat what a feel like..."
"I follow the Forrest Gump diet plan: when I'm hungry, I eat; when I'm thirsty, I drink."
"To get better at CrossFit do more CrossFit".

Yes, you have to push yourself beyond your mental barriers but how does Rich Froning do that? What does It Take for Rich Froning to do that over the last 2-4 years? That's what I was expecting based on the title and the reason I bought the book in the first place.

Enjoyable, fun read

If you have any inclination towards CrossFit, you'll enjoy this book. Rich chronicles his rapid rise to success in the CrossFit world, sharing his story from life on the farm to back-to-back "World's Fittest Man" titles. Reading this book is like sitting down with Rich over a cup of coffee. Or, more likely, over a protein shake after a WOD. (workout-of-the-day)

Every time I read a portion of the book, I wanted to throw it down and start working harder. Rich's work ethic and passion are infectious.

Equally infectious is Rich's faith.** It's genuine, and you see it laid bare in this book as he does battle against his own pride. I found his faith refreshing, bold, and courageous.

The big question Rich wrestles with throughout the book is, "What legacy am I going to leave when I die?"

Hopefully you're asking something similar.

For Rich, faith and fitness go hand-in-hand. I've found the same to be true, which is why the book resonated so well with me. When I'm disciplined with my body, I find myself more disciplined spiritually.

This is a great summer read. And a great read just in time for this year's CrossFit Games, as Rich looks to become the three-time champion for this sport.

Keep yout expectations low - writing is dull and just 'plain vanilla'

I admire the man and his story is very interesting... but his writing is not very interesting or captivating. It is rather shallow and does not make me feel like I know more about him - I do know his story but not HIM.
