Dessa Caldwell has a dream: to open Pierson House, a refuge for former prostitutes in Denver’s roughest neighborhood. But after exhausting all charitable donations, Dessa still needs a loan, and nearly every bank in town has turned her down. Her last hope hinges on the owner of Hawkins National Bank.
Henry Hawkins has a secret: though he owns the most successful bank in town, his initial capital came from three successful raids on Wells Fargo coaches. Now he’s the most eligible bachelor in Denver, but to protect his criminal past, he’s built a fortress around his heart. Not even the boldest matchmaking mother can tempt him . . . until the day Dessa Caldwell ventures into his bank requesting a loan.
Though he’s certain her proposal is a bad investment, Henry is drawn to Dessa’s passion. But that same passion drives her to make rash decisions about Pierson House . . . and about whom she can trust. One man might hold the key to the future of her mission―but he also threatens to bring Henry’s darkest secrets to light. As the walls around their hearts begin to crumble, Henry and Dessa must choose between their plans and God’s, between safety and love.

Engaging Read
By Amazon Customer
Dessa Caldwell has done everything she can to open Pierson House, a home for former prostitutes in the seediest neighborhood of Denver. She has garnered donations from several people, but she is still short what she needs to buy and begin operating the home she so desperately desires to open to help these women leave their life of misery. She approaches every bank in town and has one last bank to try and gain a loan from - Hawkins National Bank. Henry Hawkins is the owner and the bank is open and operating because of three stagecoach robberies in his past. Henry has guarded his heart well, and opens it up to no one, having become a social recluse. His heart is as impenetrable as granite, that is until he meets Dessa Caldwell.
This story had my attention from the beginning and I enjoyed it very much. As I read, there were several times I wanted to tell Dessa to be careful at the decisions she was making because her passion for her mission could tend to get her in trouble, especially with being so as trusting as she is with just about everyone...
There were times when I was reading, that this novel reminded me of Grace Livingston Hill's work, whom I loved to read when I was a teen in the 70's.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes a romance with some depth to it, where characters grow in their faith in God and learn about themselves in the process.
I received this book free from Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for this review.

Well written but too Slow
By WindRider
Dessa Caldwell, Henry Hawkins, and Turk Foster. All three have dreams and all three have secrets that could destroy those dreams. Dessa has a mission to open Pierson House, in Denver, to help those who want to leave the "ladies of the night" trade. She needs extra monies to help make that dream a reality. This is where she meets Henry Hawkins who owns Hawkins National Bank. His bank has been founded by money he stole in three Wells Fargo robberies. He has built it up a successful, prosperous business and has placed a wall between himself and others so that his secret remains just that, secret. He also doesn't see this loan to Dessa as a profitable move. Turk Foster is a man whose secrets are not all that hidden; he is a man not that welcomed in polite society, because of it. Dessa is young, passionate and at times impatient when it comes to some of her decisions. And from there the dramas begin.
I find that the book was really slow; well written with great details and good characters but a lot slower than I like personally. Her faith in God was woven into the story very skillfully; it was a part of who she was and so it was included just as naturally as her breath! I don't think that non-Christians would find this story stuffy, or "over religious"or pushing religion down their throats.
Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

All in God's Timing in the 19th Century
By Conny
Title: All in Good Time
Author: Maureen Lang
Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.
ISBN: 978-1-4143-6447-6
"Sometimes we allow ourselves to do desperate things if we don't trust God to take care of us," Dessa explains in a Gilded Legacy novel titled "All in Good Time" by Maureen Lang.
At three hundred and sixty-seven pages, this paperback book has a young woman dressed in nineteen century apparel, over-looking a western town in the background. The back cover has commentary about the book's contents and an author biography along with photograph. With no profanity, the novel is geared toward Christian women but may not be acceptable for young naïve pre-teenagers as it discusses prostitution, gambling and alcoholism.
Set in the late eighteen hundreds, Lang weaves a tale about Dessa Caldwell, a young twenty-something year old women who comes to Denver, Colorado in hopes to start the Pierson House, a shelter for women who want to get away from the "sporting" trade. After procuring funding from local churches and friends, she approaches a well-known bank so she can buy a house located in a questionable district where prostitution, gambling, and opium dens abound. Aloof and unsocial bank owner Henry Hawkins wants no part in the obviously unprofitable project, but his associate uncle gives her the needed monies anyway. With Hawkins own secretive past and Dessa's true upbringing, the two butt heads at every corner trying to get women to come to the refuge and turn from their unsavory past.
When local concert hall owner Tuck Foster meets compassionate, genuine Dessa, his motives to help her adjust to the community are questioned, especially since he has intentions to run for state senator. When Hawkins learns of Foster's interest in Dessa, he has to come to terms with his growing fondness for the beautiful, captivating and spiritual woman. However, with Dessa's spontaneous attitude, she gets herself involved in an issue that could throw the town into turmoil again and has to rely on both men's aid and assistance, while dealing with her own dark past.
With a slow, methodical start, the book picks up momentum and turns into a page turner at the end. Will Dessa learn to trust God completely, knowing "that the testing of your faith produces patience" as James 1:2-3 NKJV states at the beginning of this historical romantic fiction? Will Hawkins come clean and open his heart again to others? Will Foster realize he needs more than connections and money to reach his goal? This tome by an award-winning author gives us a reminder that God is in control and has His perfect timing in all things.
