Perfect for those who have a hard time understanding
By G. K. Cohen
For some reason or other, usually the first bible that people are introduced to is the King James Bible. While a beatuiful translation, it is very difficult to understand since the language does not reflect the current times. With that being said, even modern translations can sometimes be confusing unless you are a bible scholar and know how to study and read the bible. You can sometimes get caught up in the story and not understand the deeper meaning.

This bible is perfect for those who are new to the bible, and who thirst to understand the real meaning of the principles and wisdom that overflows from every word.

As many times as I have read the bible I have often struggled to understand the true meaning, thus losing the opportunity to apply what I have read to my personal walk. However, the notes and learning tools in this bible has brought on a fresh conversation in mind. I can understand better, and make my own discoveries. My relationship with God is moving to a higher dimension because I can hear what He is saying to me. It all makes so much sense. After understanding and really grasping, you can really apreciate God's sovereignty and the perfect wisdom of His word.

If you have ever wished to pull the same application and meaning from the bible as your pastor does when teaching, then this bible will help you on your way. Do not be discouraged by others who may say that this translation is not authentic, or if some of the descriptions are not theologically correct. Just allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you, and you will get you what you need. Remember, its about your personal relationship with your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, that is important. Any way that you grow closer to Him should be exploited at all costs. This bible will definitely help.

Innovative cover, great study aids and current translation...
By M. Ryan Kirby
I was very pleased with the actual item after searching for a new NLT Bible across the web. The cover is trendy and attractive (I bought the Brown/Camel) and the page weight is substantial enough to avoid accidental tears, but still feels "like a good Bible should".

I am especially pleased with the Life Application study notes. They have been helpful without being overly simplified or too complex. I am pleased enough with this one that I just ordered my wife a copy as well!

Very good for helping make sense of the Bible
By C. Vachon
I love this Bible. I love the Lord but struggled with reading his word. I prayed about it...now with this Bible and by reading out loud (so I don't daydream) I have finally found a way to enjoy and understand God's word for me!

Good Recipes, Easy Reading
By Christina Lang
I enjoyed reading through the recipes because they are all food that I would actually eat and serve to my family. She uses practical ingredients and recipes that she has altered ever so slightly to give us less calories and more health. There are 15 chapters that are divided up into categories like Craving Something Salty (chapter 4) and Craving Something Rich (chapter 13). She also includes a QR code at the end of each chapter for more information on health, weight loss, and kitchen coaching tips.

I recommend this book as a good source of alternative recipes for food healthier meals. I do not recommend this book as a substitute for a bible study or a diet plan. It is a light-hearted and flavorful addition to my kitchen collection.

*Tyndale House Publishers provided me with a complimentary copy of this book for a review in my own words.*

Very Encouraging
By Mikeylynn
If You Have a Craving, I Have a Cure: Experience Food, Faith, and Fulfillment a Whole New Way by Sheri Rose Shepherd. I really enjoy anything that Sheri has to write and this book was no exception. I had no idea what this book was really about or how she would tie food in with faith. To my delight I discovered that this book is completely full of healthy recipes and quotes that Sheri writes to encourage readers on a daily basis. This is not a devotional, but it could defintely be used as one. Each chapter is about a different important part of our life, not necessarily about food but about God's part in our lives.
Sheri includes tips on how to be healthy as she has lost over 50 pounds and grown in her relationship with God. This book is easy to read and understand and I highly reccomend this book, even if you already eat healthy!

With her many recipe's I can't wait to try the corn chowder, spinach cream soup, or chamomile vanilla ice cream!!

"No food is as satisfying as the energy to enjoy life."

Here is a recipe from Sheri:

HONEY-BAKED ALMOND BRITTLE
Serves 4

Ingredients:
1/4 cup honey
1 cup almonds
Dash sea salt

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350.
2. Heat honey in microwave for 30 seconds.
3. In a bowl, pour honey over almonds and mix evenly so every almond is coated.
4. Coat sheet with non-stick spray, spreads almonds on cookie sheet, and sprinkle with sea salt.
5. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes, or to desired taste. Let cool, and enjoy!

I love the seasons of love and laughter, but I have discovered that it is the seasons of loneliness and pain when I experience real faith. The best way to taste faith again is to become salt in someone else's life when you feel lifeless. What I mean is, take that very thing that you are craving in your life, and turn it into a gift to give into someone else's life.

New Life Recipes
1. Try a New Flavor
Taste and see that the Lord is good.
Oh, the joys of those who trust in him! Psalm 34:8

If you are craving more flavor in your faith walk, pick up a new Christian book to read or find a new Christian friend to hang out with. If your church does not help you grow closer to God, don't be afraid to try a new church.

The great thing about all the different ways and styles of Christian churches is that you and I have the freedom to look for the one that stimulates our faith and works best with our gifts and personality.

2. Sing a New Song
Sing a new song to the Lord! Let the whole earth sing to the Lord!
Psalm 96:1

Worship should bring joy and flavor to our faith. Find some new worship songs that fit the style of music you love to listen to. If you're craving closeness with God, sing a new song or better yet sit down and write a song to the Lord, putting it to your own melody.

3. Purify Yourself
Then he went out to the spring that supplied the town with water and threw the salt into it. And he said, "This is what the Lord says: I have purified this water. It will no longer cause death or infertility."
2 Kings 2:21

Many times we can't taste God's goodness because we feed our soul salt substitutes instead of real faith. In other words, we watch, read, and listen to things that go against everything we want to become in Christ. We lose our craving for the Word and attempt to satisfy our soul with unhealthy, man-made forms of entertainment. Just like a whole food diet makes you crave healthier foods, a pure soul food cleanse will get rid of the junk in our spirit so we can taste God's goodness again.

4. Power Up with Prayer
Let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
Matthew 5:16

Dear God,
I pray you will increase our craving for You and fill us up so full that salt and goodness spill out onto those we love. Show us the artificial things in our lives that are keeping us from tasting and becoming your salt to this world, Amen.

Taste of Truth
Life will lose its flavor if it is not seasoned with faith, hope, and love.

Watch today's message and laugh a lot and fall in love with your Lord all over again! View the first week of my Bible Study at [...] and enjoy the recipe below! (From Sheri Shepherd)

I Got Hungry Just Reading It!
By J4Life5
This book isn't quite what I expected. I thought it would be more of a reference book where each chapter would be substitutions for foods. For example, if you crave chocolate, then eat this instead. However, it was so much better than that. It wasn't all about foods, there were chapters on if you are craving more energy or craving rest. Each chapter had recipes to promote the topic of the chapter, but also scriptures to feed your soul.

I really enjoyed reading through the recipes. I like to read about new and different recipes, and some of these recipes are things I never thought to try such as zucchini pancakes. I liked reading the gluten-free recipes and those using coconut milk or soy milk. I know a lot of people who are cutting out gluten due to food allergies. I was also thrilled to see recipes that were lower carb than what you see in a non-specialized cookbook. I can't say that I would use all of the recipes in the book, but there are several I can't wait to try, such as the Chamomile Vanilla Ice Cream recipe as a bedtime snack!

Not only does this book address food for your stomach, but also food for your soul. How wonderful to have scriptures to meditate on while preparing the corresponding recipe. I even like Shepherd's suggestion to make exercise an act of worship. What an interesting way to reframe the idea of exercise.

I think this book would be beneficial to a wide variety of readers. So many people are becoming more health conscious these days that these recipes would appeal to them. This would make an excellent gift for someone moving into their own place or as a gift to yourself when you reach a milestone goal in a weight loss program.

Revangelical: Becoming the Good News People We're Meant to Be, by Lance Ford

When you hear the word evangelical, do you think “good news”? That’s what the word means, and it’s what we are meant to be. Yet the surrounding culture often views us as exactly the opposite. Calling yourself an evangelical too often means you are seen through a negative stereotype; people are apprehensive when they hear that an evangelical family has moved into the neighborhood. But is this the way it has to be? What would it look like if evangelical Christians were joyfully living out the gospel in such a way that the culture had no choice but to recognize us as Good News people?

Revangelical is a call to realign your heart with the things that most concerned Jesus―a bold message to get the Good News of the gospel of Jesus back into our heads, hearts, mouths, and feet. Full of stories of evangelicals who are living out the Good News and changing the world, Revangelical will inspire and equip us to relearn the heart of the gospel and to become the people God has called us to be.

Review
Lance Ford brings a blast of fresh air and fresh perspective. Revangelical is highly recommended for those who are ready for a clear-eyed and good-hearted diagnosis of what's gone wrong in American evangelicalism, and a prescription for how it can get back to being the Good News it was meant to be.
Tom Krattenmaker
Contributing columnist to USA Today and author of The Evangelicals You Don't Know

Part personal narrative, part iconoclasm, part confession, Lance Ford's Revangelical challenges the entrenched idols--nationalistic, cultural, and religious--embedded in modern evangelicalism. Ford calls for renewal along the lines of evangelicalism's own primary concern . . . that of the gospel itself. A prophetic call to re-evangelize the church.
Alan Hirsch
Author of Untamed, The Permanent Revolution, and numerous award winning books

Here is a path forward for evangelicalism that integrates the best of the past (e.g., the missiology of E. Stanley Jones) while it innovates for the future out of theological integrity, not political correctitude. Enjoy finding nuggets of wisdom on every page, not, as all too often, scattered throughout like breadcrumbs in a forest.
Leonard Sweet
Bestselling author, professor (Drew University, George Fox University), and chief contributor to sermons.com

What I like most about this book is its courage and candor. I find Lance Ford's careful but plainspoken assessments and exhortations very refreshing and welcome--in fact, needed! He offers sound wisdom that calls the people of God to first-order things.
Mark Labberton
President of Fuller Theological Seminary and author of Called: The Crisis and Promise of Following Jesus Today

Lance Ford's new book is an uncompromising call for us to be rewired by the Good News of King Jesus in order to bring restoration and renewal to an exhausted, chaotic, and strife-ridden world, regardless of the implications for our priorities, our politics, or our pocketbooks. Inspiring and prophetic in the best sense of that term.
Michael Frost
Author of Incarnate, The Road to Missional, and Exiles

A blast of fresh air and fresh perspective. . . . Highly recommended. (Tom Krattenmaker, Contributing columnist for USA Today)

That’s what the word means, and it’s what we’re meant to be. Yet too often, it’s not how others see us. Do you ever say you’re an evangelical Christian and see others immediately grow defensive? Do they assume you’re judgmental or angry; do they make assumptions about your beliefs, your intelligence, or your politics?

When people look at us, do they see the Jesus we claim to love?

Lance Ford has learned firsthand the critical importance of rediscovering what it means to live the Good News. In this groundbreaking book, he calls us as Christians to be re-evangelized―to realign our hearts with the things that most concerned Jesus. To transcend the culture wars and get back to the gospel of the Kingdom of Heav-en. To joyfully live the gospel in such a way that the surrounding culture will have no choice but to recognize us as Good News people.

In Revangelical, Ford offers inspiring glimpses of a life-changing, church-stirring movement and shares hope-filled stories of evangelicals who are living out the Good News. The revangelicals are changing the world. Are you ready to join them?

A book so true that it will offend most American Christians
By Scott Uselman
Revangelical is a much needed book for the American Church. Lance Ford has placed his finger on some of the issues that the American Church seems to struggle with. In fact, it seems that the American Church struggles to place her citizenship in God's Kingdom above the citizenship of the United States.

For those who carefully read Scripture, and truly desire to allow Scripture and The Holy Spirit, to help them become more like Christ I would suggest that this book is helpful. Ford points out that Christians, "little Christs," are meant to be Good News People. He further suggests that the American Church does not seem to be the Good News People that God intended His Church to be. In fact, it could be argued that we, in the Western Church, are more focused on cursing than the Good News.

Ford accurately pointed that most church people do not seem to be able to define what the Good News is. He conducted experiments, as have I, with pastors and lay people about explaining what the Good News is; many can't. According to Ford, Jesus' Good News is about the "in-breaking Kingdom of God." In fact, that is what Jesus said too. In the book of Mark, Jesus said the Good News is that the Kingdom of God has come near.

The idea of the "in-breaking Kingdom" is Good News for the poor and oppressed. This thought leads us into the confrontation that so many Evangelicals who are against government aid for the poor and immigrants, seem to be missing the Kingdom since their focus is on a simple belief statement through what is known as "The Sinner's Prayer," as well as mixed with loyalties toward a political party. Evangelicals need to keep in mind that God's people embraces the poor and serves the poor. Furthermore, Evangelicals, if they are like Jesus, have arms that embrace undocumented citizens since that is God's agenda too. Since most Evangelicals have settled for the idea of salvation contingent upon a proper belief about Jesus with no worry about entering into God's Kingdom "on earth as it is in Heaven," the urgent message seems to be that they must refocus on what Jesus focused on; His in-breaking Kingdom which requires action as the result of belief.

Ford also challenged the way we do church today. Evangelicals are focused on building churches up with professional communicators and musicians, but do not seem to be focused on building up God's Kingdom. As a small church pastor myself, I find the mission of Jesus to bring Good News to everyone a great low-budget way to build up a church. After all, the by-product of sharing the Good News is a growing church.

The hard point for me personally is that Ford challenged my patriotism in regard for war. Yet, only in the sense that we should not be rejoicing over the death of the enemy, or desiring to be at war. He reminded me of the desire that Jesus has for peace in our world; especially from the result of being a Good News Person. He also reminds us that love truly conquers all. Contrary to another review about this book, this does not seem to be a political book. In fact, this is a Kingdom book. It is a book that turns away from the question, "if you die tonight, where will your soul end up?" It is a book that faces the real question that each person must wrestle with, "How will you live in God's Kingdom today if you live?"

It seems that Evangelicals need to read this book to remind each one of us that The Universal Church is the result of Christ's in-breaking Kingdom. And, because His Kingdom is in-breaking there are non-negotiable characteristics of this Kingdom if it is truly of Him. My fear, as well as Ford's, seems to be that Christians in the west, particularly in America, are not showing those who are lost this Kingdom. This Kingdom has been supplanted to our individualism. Our individualism is something most church leaders and Christians understand and is dealt with by Ford too.

Therefore, I recommend this book to all who want to be Christians (little Christs), and embrace the opportunity to take part in Jesus's movement of the in-breaking Kingdom and become the Good News People that we were meant to be.

Is Your Gospel Too Small?
By Joshua Lee Henry
Is there nothing more to being an "evangelical Christian" other than simply voting conservative in politics, embracing a capitalistic view of economy, and preaching the Bible as the inerrant Word of God, meant for establishing the morality code of a society? Is the developed and free world, namely the United States of America, really a foretaste of Heaven's coming reality on earth? Does Jesus' command to "love your enemy" include Muslims and liberals? These questions, and the gross misconceptions they represent, address just some of the issues that Lance Ford tackles head on in his new book "Revangelical: Becoming the Good News People We're Meant to Be" published by Tyndale Momentum.

Unfortunately, my preceding list of general inquires captures the heart's concern and stereotype of many whom claim to be in the evangelical camp. As a self-identified, evangelical, I myself am thankful for this new book and the gentle correction it brings, not just to poor theology, but more importantly, for a repentance and renewal of the genuine Christian life.

Lance is a speaker, consultant and cofounder of the Sentralizled conferences. He is also on the national leadership team for the Forge America missional training network and is a board member for Missio. Like his previous books, Right Here, Right Now", coauthored with Alan Hirsch, (2011) "Unleader" (2012), and "The Missional Quest" coauthored with Brad Brisco (2013), "Revangelical" (2014), is a prophetic call to action for the Western Church at large.

As the title of this book suggests, Lance believes there is a need in the North American Church to "recalibrate", "reunite", "restore", and "reposition" (just some of the chapter titles), our current understanding of the Gospel and how it is shared with others.

As a native Texan who came to faith during the Cold War era, Ford learned early on that the Pledge of Allegiance held equal, if not more weight, than the Lord's Prayer. In the time period that saw the emergence of Ronald Reagan and the "Religious Right", the Good News of the Kingdom of God was also sadly reduced to the articulation of "four spiritual laws" and a sales pitch for cosmic fire insurance. Indeed for some, the gospel has become too small.

So what is a "Revangelical"? Lance gives definition to his made-up word by stating that revangelicals are really just a new breed of evangelicals that are converted to the entire gospel in authentically living by the empowering work of the Holy Spirit, to be Good News people in the world. Lance writes that "Revangelicals are followers of Jesus who have moved beyond merely favoring Jesus with their belief in him and have committed themselves to actually following him with the substance of their day-to-day lives. They take Jesus' words very personally, and often quite literally, and are convinced that his example is indeed a livable model and standard for us to emulate. Revangelicals are those who seek to live their lives as Good News people for the Kingdom of Heaven, even if it costs them the American Dream" (p. 19).

He goes on to explain how the word "evangelical" comes from the same word as "gospel" and that as Christians or followers of Jesus; we are to be disciples who embody the Good News, right here, right now. Continuing, Lance states that "Revangelicals have come to the conclusion that if what Jesus taught and commanded is too impractical for the real world, then the real world must be false" (p. 20).

Recently I had coffee with a young "twenty-something" who is currently attending a small Bible college. As we sat talking to each other from across the table, my spirit became troubled. He told me of how during the first two weeks of his evangelism class, the professor focused more on teaching flashy communication techniques, apologetic arguments, and models for conversion that seemed all too formulaic. Not a single mention of the Kingdom, no talk of mercy and compassion, and an apparent absence of anything that sounded like a pleasant and joyful announcement. However, as Lance Ford explains, that is the very kind of exclamation Jesus made as he embarked upon his public ministry. In Luke 4:18-19, we read that just after his baptism, Jesus walked into the synagogue of Nazareth on the Sabbath, and declared that "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor" (NRSV).

Quoting the prophet Isaiah, Jesus makes a public announcement that preaches grace, justice, salvation, and abundance. The Good News Jesus made known, resembled the declaration of the year of Jubilee. During this time, family, freedom, and forgiveness were available to all. This is the kind of Good News evangelicals should be known for. Instead of messages of hate and damnation, revangelicals preach heaven come near and demonstrate it in both word and action. As the saying goes, revangelicals are more known by what they stand for, what Jesus stated as love, rather than what they stand against. Truly, love is the greatest gift; ripest of all spiritual fruit and the number one marker by which the world can tell we are Christ's disciples.

Through stories from his own life and the lives of other revangelicals, Lance makes clear that this love, the love that compelled God to send His only Son into the world to die as an eternal sacrifice, is exhibited in the Church when we incarnate the Gospel into our neighborhoods, identify with the poor and marginalized, value stewardship over ownership, and confess salvation in Jesus more than condemning sinners and casting judgment.

Revangelicals share the earth shattering news of God's Kingdom breaking forth into our reality by the redeeming work of Jesus Christ. They place their hope in a bloodied and wooden cross, stained red by the shedding of God's life for the reconciling of creation, instead of a flagpole. It is not the stars and stripes of the good old red, white, and blue revangelicals commit their life to, but the scars of Christ and the stripes of His wounds in which we find our healing.

Ford clarifies the Kingdom of God as being neither communist nor socialist, but admittedly communal and social. Revangelicals put their trust in the Lamb not the elephant or donkey. They understand life as exiles sent on mission to live in but not of the world.

As a millennial Christian leader, pioneering missional communities on multiple university campuses, I have become all too familiar with the research on the "nones" -those that identify as "no religious affiliation" and the negative attitudes postmoderns have towards all things church. Ford makes clear that it is not relevance that will attract younger generations, but a fresh encounter with the Risen Lord. This type of ministry service brings the Kingdom of God right into the center of the local community. One of my favorite stories of how Lance fleshes this out with the church planters he coaches involves driving around Kansas City's Troost Avenue, the line of socio-economic demarcation with U2's song "Where the Streets Have No Name" on a constant replay loop in the car.

Through the practical experience of Lance's frontline ministry adventures and his engagement with the current missional church movement, he shares how advancements in the Church's future can be found in the remembering of great missionary heroes of years past. For this I am thankful Ford draws on the rich well of wisdom found in the missiological writings of E. Stanley Jones. First addition copies of "Christ at the Round Table" (1928), "The Christ of Every Road" (1930) and "Conversion" (1959) sit atop my office desk. In our current pluralistic age, there is much to be learned from this great peacemaker and missionary to India. Jones truly embodied the Good News of Jesus Christ to a country that had nearly as many Hindu gods as its population count. In a brief statement to close a chapter section, Ford summarizes his argument by saying "Revangelicals are those Christians who seek to live their lives as Jesus would live if he were us" (p. 51).

Complete with an accompanying website (www.revangelicalbook.com), supplementary videos, small group resources, and discussion questions at the end of each chapter, "Revangelical" is a timely resource for the Church and presents an incredible opportunity for ambassadors of the Kingdom to embrace the Good News.

What are we to make of books like this one
By DocRoc
What are we to make of books like this one . . . books that challenge us to live our faith outside our comfort zones . . . books that demonstrate there are other ways to walk in the narrow Way . . . books that challenge us to be more like Jesus and less like American Christians . . . books that offer definable ways to demonstrate that the kingdom is available rather than the mere belief system of our imperial christendom? If good preaching, as the saying goes, "comforts the afflicted and afflicts the comfortable" then this book is timely in every way. The term "evangelical", the author suggests, needs to be taken back from those who promote it as anything but "good news" and be redefined as exactly that, the good news of Jesus the Christ.

The first chapter, "Recalibrate" tells of the author's personal journey from a conservative evangelical to a missional revangelical and serves somewhat as the author's own Foreword to the book.

In the next chapter, "Repent", the author tries to discover why evangelicals are leaving at the rate of nearly 50,000 people a week and what can be done about it. The answer of course is to "repent", but of what? Repent of what has become evangelical Christianity and (re)turn to the gospel of Jesus.

In "Recommit", the third chapter, we are introduced to the "us-vs.-them" mentality in regard to evangelicals and how they shun the world for their personal protection but by doing so fail to make roadways by which to share the good news. This is the longest chapter of the book (37 pages) as it should to be in order to explain what commitment to Jesus means and does not mean in relation to the world we live in.

Chapter 4, entitled "Reconcile" is a chatty little chapter filled with anecdotes of people who no longer experience the "us-vs.-them" worldview and are instead making inroads into peoples' lives without compromising their own faith.

In the next chapter, "Represent", we are challenged to continue the incarnation of Jesus as his body in the here and now. What that looks like may surprise you.

In the 6th chapter, "Renew", we encounter what may be the greatest obstacle for an evangelical to become a revangelical, namely, Jubilee or in our day and age economic and social justice. The author handles the topic well beginning with Jesus' announcement of the year of Jubilee in the beginning of his ministry and then quoting other notables on the subject as E. Stanley Jones and Mark VanSteenwyk and exemplifies such groups as the Catholic Workers Movement.

"Restore" is the title of chapter 7 which brings us face to face with two views of salvation: (a) evangelical "personal salvation" that confines itself to getting others and oneself into heaven, and (b) revangelical salvation that goes beyond "personal salvation" to bring restoration to our society and neighborhoods to help, as the author states, "level the playing field".

Chapter 8, "Reunite", brings up the challenge of resisting evil and being active peacemakers wherever the need is found.

The final chapter, "Reposition", challenges the reader to not just believe the gospel of Jesus but to also obey it by doing it. The author's definition of a revangelical can also be found in the closing chapter when he writes,
"Laura Hairston is a revangelical. She is a Jesus follower who doesn't just point to weekly church attendance as proof of her devotion to him. She has personalized the call to go into all the world with the Good News of the Kingdom of Heaven, and she is convinced that `the world' begins in her subdivision. Laura's middle-school group is only one of many pieces the Lord has used in what has now become a church, started by the Hairstons out of their home."

Revangelical is a very readable book with lots of stories and examples to keep the reader engaged. But it is also a very quotable book with lots of footnotes and documentation that could easily add some punch to sermons, speeches or lessons.

The weakest part of the book for me personally was the chapter on peacemaking. It leaned toward proof-texting without a lot of application. It seemed the author felt the need to write about this aspect of revangelicalism but did not have much experience in it himself. But to his credit he wisely kept the chapter short rather than go on about a topic that he seems less familiar with. It is, however, a topic that the Missional movement as a whole will need to address more radicially in the future.

While this book has plenty of Scripture quotes it is not too heavy on theology. Instead, it's geared more toward practicality. The questions at the end of each chapter are a nice addition. It would make a great book for a Sunday School class, Bible study, house church gathering, or personal reading and reflection. It may also serve well as an introduction to the Missional church movement as a whole.

Perfection!
By Keleigh Crigler Hadley, author of Revenge Inc.
This is my second time reading the Bible in a year. My first time was with the New Kings James version and I have to admit, I struggled to read it daily. This time however, I LOVE ending my day with the Word of God. This version is so readable and relateable that even my seven year old asks me to read it with him,

I have been reading the Bible thru every year for ? 30 years ? And this is my favorite of all these 'annual' Bibles. They have 'extras' for each day that are actually 'worth' reading - (not time consuming, either) --- I don't care for these laid back traslations - but for a daily reading it's OK ... (for my study & writing messages I use K.J.V. or Amplified) -- I purchased the paperback and have 'outlined' it with shipping tape along the edges and binding - not that it WAS falling apart, but to keep it from it. Printing is a nice size (not too small) ... I recommend this 'particular' one above the rest.

Fortunately, God has revealed truths about himself in Scripture that can untangle our confusion. In this daily guide to studying and praying according to the attributes of God, Ann Spangler resurrects old-fashioned words like holiness, omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence. At some point in our lives, many of us have fallen victim to an imbalanced, distorted view of God. Sometimes we see him as a hard god―all-seeing, all-powerful, and all-knowing, but not someone we can trust or get close to. Other times he’s depicted as much softer―always tolerant and not too demanding, but not much better than we are. What we need is the perspective only God can give―a true and deeper vision of who he is as the almighty, everlasting God, who is holy and yet merciful, jealous and yet loving, righteous and yet forgiving.

Let us not settle for a vision of God that is thin and anemic, one that will fall to pieces when life becomes more difficult than we can bear. Instead, let us pray that God will draw us out of our complacency so that we might hunger and thirst for more of him.

As you read through this book, I hope you will share my sense that learning more about God’s attributes is like drawing water from a deep well―the kind that can refresh and invigorate your faith. In the days and weeks ahead, may God give you the boldness to prayerfully insist that he nourish, sustain, and strengthen you with a clearer revelation of who he is.

"Let us not settle for a vision of God that is thin and anemic, one that will fall to pieces when life becomes more difficult than we can bear. Instead, let us pray that God will draw us out of our complacency so that we might hunger and thirst for more of him."

Yes!

Let us not!

In Praying the Attributes of God, Ann Spangler focuses on 17 attributes of God, which is to be read across as many weeks. Based upon Scripture, she explores God's
loving; good; infinite; unchangeable and immutable; all powerful, omnipotent; present everywhere, omnipresent; all knowing, omniscient; patient; wise; eternal, self sufficient; jealous; just, righteous; merciful; faithful; holy; creative; and transcendent nature. Specifically, Spangler conducts a word-study of many of the Hebrew and Greek words used to describe God in the Bible to "untangle our confusion" of who God is. In addition to using Scripture, her depth of preparation is demonstrated by her references to Christian authors such as A.W. Tozer, C.S. Lewis, Charles H. Spurgeon, as well as scientist, Blaise Pascal, etiquette expert, Judith Martin, and, reporter, Mary McCarty.

This book is for "anyone who feels drawn to God, yet is afraid of him." Examples and illustrations are general, not gender-specific. So, even though Spangler is well-known for writing books for women and about biblical women, men should have no problem gleaning much from this book. Also, this book offers much to the new Christian and the mature Christian alike. In addition to word-study, which forces readers to dig deep into the biblical descriptions of God, she gives practical advice on Tuesdays through Thursdays on how to pray - reflect on Scripture, praise God, offer thanks, confess sins, ask and make supplication.

Drawing closer to God
By J. Lussier
I have enjoyed reading Ann Spangler's devotional books. Praying the Attributes of God is another great one.
I have read her previous books, Praying the Names of God and Praying the Names of Jesus.

If you are looking to draw closer to God and to get to know Him better, this is a wonderful book to have in your possession.

There are 17 chapters, so you do this for 17 weeks - Monday through Friday. You'll be reading about how God cares for you, is better than you think, is bigger than you think, is not moody, is not weak, is close to everywhere, is never surprised, is never frustrated, always knows what to do, has no limits, is a lover, is always fair, leans toward compassion, never gives up, is better than anyone you know, is an artist, and is above it all. I think reading about God and His attributes will help you fall in love with Him all over again. What an awesome God we serve!!

Monday is when you read a key Scripture passage that shows you an attribute of God along with some background information, a short prayer and some questions. Tuesday-Thursday is short devotional passages that include Bible verses and ideas on what to reflect on; praise God; offer thanks;confess; ask God. Make sure to take some time to pray and praise the Lord.
Friday is a day to reflect on what you have studied during the week and how His specific attribute "connects to God's promises in Scripture." These Bible passages can be memorized or you can meditate on them. There are extra Bible verses to look up and meditate upon.

I really enjoy the layout of this devotional, the topics Ann Spangler touches upon. I usually come away from my time of Bible reading/prayer spiritually strengthened, encouraged, and I feel like I can face the day. I recommend that you get a copy for yourself.

Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in return for my honest review.

And the Shofar Blew, by Francine Rivers

In the Old Testament, God called His people to action with the blast of the shofar, a ram’s horn. He still calls His people today.

In this relevant and timely novel, dynamic young preacher Paul Hudson is committed to building his church―but at what cost? When Paul accepted the call to pastor the struggling church, he had no idea what to expect. But it didn’t take long for Paul to turn Centerville Christian Church around. Attendance is up, way up, and everything is going so well. If only his wife, Eunice, could see it that way. Still, he tries not to let her quiet presence distract him. But Eunice knows that something isn’t right . . . and it hasn’t been for a long time.

The more Paul’s zeal and ambition builds, the more he loses sight of the One who called him. As Paul and those around him struggle to discern what it truly means to live out their faith, they must ultimately choose between their own will and God’s plan.

From Booklist
Rivers' And the Shofar Blew is about a young minister, Paul Hudson, who takes on a small, perhaps even a dying, church in central California. Paul is hardworking and ambitious, but his ambition soon overcomes the real purpose of his work, so that questionable means begin to seem justified for his laudable aims. In the mix also are Eunice, his wife, and a newly converted, reformed alcoholic named Stephen Decker, who designs Paul's brand-new church. Rivers seems to grow more moralistic with each book but as usual turns in a strong narrative, posing issues that ring loud and clear if only within church circles. John Mort

Review
"Francine Rivers' latest work lives up to her reputation as a truly gifted Christian writer ... Her prose and style are poetic ... I have anxiously awaited for this book since I found out in February that it was due in May and I was not disappointed.," "As I read through I was amazed at the various parts of my own personal and professional journey where I may have taken credit for things I had done and not given all the glory and honor to the one who so rightfully deserved it - Our Lord! As a wife and mother I was married to my job and my family suffered a great deal. I laughed, cried and was amazed at how the story really grabbed me.," "Please read this book. There is no way you will be disappointed."

"He seemed like the perfect pastor to lead Centerville Christian Church. She was the perfect pastor's wife."

When Paul Hudson accepted the call to pastor the struggling church, he had no idea what to expect. But it didn't take long for Paul to turn Centerville Christian Church around. Attendance was up-way up. Everything was going so well. If only his wife could see it that way. Still, he tried not to let her quiet presence disturb him. She knew something wasn't right, and it hadn't been for a long time. . . .

Eunice closed the bedroom door quietly and knelt beside her bed.
" I'm drowning, God. I've never felt so alone. Who can I turn to but you, Lord? Where else does a pastor's wife go for help when her marriage is failing and her life is out of control? Who can I trust with my anguish, Lord? Who but you?"

Grasping her pillow, she pressed it tightly to her mouth so that her sobs would not be heard.

I've Been There...I Know!
By Eric Wilson
I love quality fiction, and I love the church...But I've also seen tame, watered-down versions of both. As a former PK (preacher's kid), I've seen just about everything that happens in this book. I wasn't sure, though, if Francine Rivers would get honest and get to the heart of the issues plaguing ministers and the modern church.
Wow! She nails issue after issue on the head. And she does so in the midst of a captivating story with believable characters. We follow the tale of a small church that, in its dying hours, brings in a new pastor and his family. Soon, the congregation is growing and things are looking great--from the outside. From the inside, however, from the eyes of the pastor's wife and son and his elders, the problems are growing in proportion to the church's "success." The tale, spanning 15+ years, shows many of sacrifices and deceits expounded in the name of "serving God." None of the characters go unscathed.
A previous reviewer asked who this book was written for. First, it is a challenge to those who cater to such shallow faith. Second, it is an encouragement to those who have struggled through this and thought they were alone. Third, it is for those who enjoy a well-told tale. Yes, it is full of christian lingo and platitudes, but Rivers draws a line between the genuine and the counterfeit. Believe me, most non-churchgoers can tell the difference quickly.
While heartbreaking at times, this is stuff that needs to be brought to light. Rivers has won my respect with a story full of wisdom, grace, and God's honest truth.

Excellent story, great moral issues ; I ripped through it!!
By James D. Umbach
I've posted before that I am not a huge reader of novels. Sure, I read a lot, but I've never really gotten into fiction much. I may have to reconsider this policy, though, having just finished Francine River's very engrossing book And the Shofar Blew. I picked this book out for myself; I had never heard of it until I saw it, decided it looked cool, and bought it.
I started the book Thursday, and finished it last night after a marathon 100-page session. Mrs. Rivers, best known for romance novels, has broken new ground in this fast-paced story of Paul Hudson, son of a well-known television minister who comes to California to take over a dying church in a small town. The congregation of Centerville Christian Center had been declining for years, with no youth and a tiny, elderly group in the pews each week.
Paul, who brings his wife and young son with him, decides that he wants to bring new people into the church. He asks around and finds out what is needed: people don't want to feel guilty, they don't want stale old hymns, and they don't want hard-hitting messages. So, Paul waters down scriptures, brings in new songs, and enlivens the youth group. His fast changes alienate many elders, most of whom resign. Yet Centerville Christian Center thrives, and soon a new building is needed. Paul enlists the help of Steven Decker, a divorced father and recovering alcoholic, to design the new church building. Samuel Mason, former pastor of the church, and his wife Abby can only watch helplessly as they see the old, Godly church fall away, and a false "Christian in name only" church take its place.
Of course, there are various subplots: Paul and his father never have gotten along, nor have Paul and his son. Paul has ticked off many old members of the church. He also has falling-outs with a few other important people (I don't want to give anything away) and, eventually, does something that can potentially shatter his ministry--and his family. The story of a man's redemption--with himself, with his family, with his friends, and with God--is fascinating. The lessons that Paul, Stephen, and others learn can also teach us something. Pay attention to their mistakes, and see if you can find yourself in the book somewhere. I know I sure did!
I also like the fact that the novel takes place in Northern California, with the cities of Sacramento, R**eville, and Granite Bay playing a prominent role. Two other local communities are also in the book, with their names disguised: I am fairly sure that "Centerville" is Galt, and "Rockville" is Lincoln, based on descriptions of the towns, highways, and roads in these ficticious communities. I have no idea why Rivers would use some real names and change the names of other towns, but it doesn't matter. I feel as though I'm right there in the car with the characters as the author describes such local places as "The Grapevine," "Highway 99," "Sacramento Airport," and "Arco Arena." I'd have enjoyed the book even if the setting were elsewhere, but it's always nice to romp around in the same places as the people in the story.
And the Shofar Blew by Francine Rivers. Highly recommended. Go out and buy it now!!!

Moving . . . yet practical
By Jawkka Flo Daisy
What I loved the most about this book was that it deals with subject matter sensitive to our day and age. Have you ever found yourself reading a novel that paints a pretty picture, and tells a good story, but you just wonder "what does this have to do with me?" You won't be asking yourself that question when you read And the Shofar Blew. Shofar is real, moving, and applicable. It is the story of a minster and his wife, their church, his ambition, and a crumbling marriage. All may seem well on the surface: he is dutiful and hard working, she is faithful and supportive, but this couple is only going through the motions and both denying the truth.

I think Shofar would be an excellent book for any couple to read together, young or old, new or worn, it has a lesson to teach that everyone needs to hear. Reading Shofar will teach the reader the dangers of selfish ambition, how working for onesself, and not the Lord, can destroy. And a relationship must focus on both people, each one caring for the others' needs; it's not enough to do all the taking or all the giving. But most importantly, Shofar reminds us that when we feel alone, rejected, and abandoned, God is our best friend, guiding us by the hand all the way through. Shofar will hold you captive, and you won't be free until you've read the last page!
