From the Back Cover
They started out seeking a pastor. But what they found was each other. When a small-town southern church throws a hodgepodge of wildly different personalities together in a van and sends them out to look for a new pastor, the dust gets kicked up in more ways than one. There’s Travis, a young husband whose ambiguity about becoming a father is threatening his marriage. Dot, a middle-aged busybody whose strong opinions set everyone’s teeth on edge. Susie, an attractive single mom coping with a troubled teenage son. Bill, an older man who centers his entire life on caring for his fragile wife. Joyce, a transplanted Yankee who feels like an outsider. Matt, highly educated but socially awkward. And Frankie, who just tries to keep the peace. Jostling along bumpy back roads, they squabble about practically everything, from which pastoral candidates show promise to where to stop for lunch. But gradually the facades fall away, revealing seven lonely souls drawn together in a search for healing and grace.

What You Are Looking for Might Not be So Far away.

There are times in life when we are seemingly thrown together with a group of people that we do not know or have anything in common with. Whether it be a small group at church, colleges at work or a committee at school, it can be amazing what a random group of people can accomplish. And often, within that group of people, it becomes clear that they really do have things in common and need each other to make a difference in this world.

A seemingly random group of people find themselves together in The Search Committee by Tim Owens. This group has been put in charge of the task of finding a new minister to lead their church congregation. By spending many Sunday's together traveling to different churches to meet and listen to different ministers, the members of this committee learn a lot about each other. And through some challenge circumstances, they come to rely on each other.

I enjoyed reading The Search Committee because it was a book at felt at home in it. I could see myself and members of my church as the characters. I know what it is like to be put in this situation like this. I found the book very real and relatable. I think it is one of the better books I have read in a while.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Tyndale House Publishers for review purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255

The Search Committee
By B. Burnham
The Search Committee, Tim Owens' debut novel, is a book about a small church pastor search committee and its adventures both on the road and at home. From the back cover, I thought this would be right up my alley. And while I thought it was humorous in many places and poignant in others, it fell a little flat for me.

The odd assortment of church members -- 4 women and 3 men -- travel most Sundays across the southeast on the elusive trail of the perfect pastor for their small town Presbyterian church. Their experiences vary from the ridiculous to the sublime, but they persevere in their mission to fill the pulpit. Along the way, life definitely happens -- a spouse dies, an affair is uncovered, and ghosts from the past show up.

I think the concept of the book is great. And I liked most of the characters. But their relationships didn't really grow all that much. In the end they do find a suitable pastor for their church, but that was a bit predictable. So my final verdict on the book was that it was okay. I will, however, keep an eye out for other books by Owens.

(I received The Search Committee from Tyndale in return for an honest review. The opinions expressed are mine alone.)

Sheep DO need a shepherd, some more than others
By Mary Wells
In today's secular society, it is very difficult to write a book about FAITH. And that's what this book is about - FAITH, not religion. For those people who do not understand the difference, you are really one of those sheep in need of a shepherd - one that leads you to hope and not despair. In his novel, Owens, through a sermon by a female Presbyterian pastor, defines FAITH as simply "keeping one's eyes open" and the sermon he uses masterfully provides an analogy that makes sense of this definition. It is tempting to simply give in to despondence given the current political situation in this country, so I believe that this novel has been released at the opportune time, offering us all some answers and some desperately needed hope.

It is also very difficult to write about the South, particularly to write for people who did not grow up in that region of America. Owens has written about the South more honestly and authentically than any other "Southern" writer that comes to mind - without the theatrics of Conroy, without the confusion of Edgerton, and without the sentimentality of Sparks. I believe he has accomplished an important mission in doing this and quietly removed a lot of stereotypes that have been floating around for too long.

As far as his characters not being fully developed enough to care about, as was stated in one narrow-sighted review, I beg to differ, and marvel that the reviewer could not recognize that all of these characters are all facets of one very complex individual, the author. It was obvious to me from the beginning.

Anyone who attempts to give this novel a negative review needs to either re-read it "keeping their eyes open" or go back to school and learn what makes a piece of writing this deeply personal truly great. I can only look forward to his next novel and wonder what insight and understanding of the human condition and human nature Owens' provides. He is truly a genius in helping one see those things.
