Great resource for busy families!
By J4Life5
We really enjoyed reading this book together. The length of each reading is perfect for a family on the go and I found that some of the readings sparked discussions that were insightful and thoughtful. The kids really enjoyed the activities, which vary from riddles, to information about holidays around the world, to weird facts about weather, and all the way to hands-0n activities we made together.
Despite our best intentions, it is sometimes difficult to carve out time for a structured devotion time. We utilize this book on the drive to school, which was perfect! The children all took turns reading, which was an additional benefit. It also helped the driver (me) have a more charitable attitude toward other drivers along the way. Sometimes in Southern California traffic I need all the help I can get! It also had the added benefit of keeping boys focused on something other than the sounds their brother was making or where his hands were at in relationship to his sibling. Obviously the hands on activities had to wait until we returned home in the afternoon, but it was nice to have something to look forward to on those days.
On a side note, although this book is geared toward boys, my daughter also enjoyed the discussions, activities, and readings. If you are a family with a mix of boys and girls, don't shy away from using it with the girls, too.
I can't say anything negative about this book. It is everything it claimed to be and is a great choice for any family thirsting for a devotional book to use all together. Give it a try and see if it is a good fit for your family. It is perfect for ours!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Tyndale Publishers in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

I have four sons, so something with 'active boys' in the title sounds great to me
By Debra Brinkman
When the book arrived, I pulled it out, called my 10-year-old son, and started to dig in. The book is dated, so the first dilemma I faced was whether to start at Jan. 1, or whether to jump to September.
I made the wrong choice.
The Jan. 1 entry has an activity that involves paper plates, balloons, and tape. I didn't have plates or balloons, and the active boys of my household are forever losing tape.
I closed the book, determined to buy things and start fresh soon.
And then the book sat.
Two weeks later I dug the book out again, without kids around, and started reading. What I discovered was that most of the activities don't require anything stranger than a pencil, the lessons are memorable even without the activity, and I really can actually use this.
The other reason I should have just jumped in with the lesson for the actual date is that some of the materials are seasonally appropriate. Towards the end of November, for instance, there are a few days that deal with thankfulness.
Today's lesson is an example. October 10 is titled "Thanks Be To God." The first thing that happens each day is a few paragraphs of "devotional" and this one is about Thanksgiving, and the fact that different countries celebrate at different times (2nd Monday in October in Canada is one example given).
After the devotional, there is some type of activity. For today, it is a fairly un-active one. They are to match up holidays to the country where they happen.
Each day also has a brief prayer suggestion -- "Tell God you're going to be thankful to him forever and ever and ever."
Finally there is a scripture.
Some days are more active. Like that January 1st one where they are to make UFOs out of paper plates, balloons, and tape.
My bottom line:
I'm setting this book aside now that we've played with it some, and I am going to work through it starting in January of 2015. I really like the messages and the memorable activities. I just need to be sure to look ahead so that I have what I need on hand.

engaging
By sc2424
The One Year Devotions for Active Boys is a daily devotional book that is written for boys. The format is that there is a topic with a story (from the Bible or just a fictional story) which is then followed by some "weird facts" or an experiment, puzzle, or jokes. The next segment is a prayer starter and then a Bible verse that relates.
The narrative is written in an easy to read style, I think it would be easy for a boy to read himself or else a parent to read with their son. The topics are wide-ranging, from science to God's power to leaders to arguing to wisdom, and etc. The book is intended for 7-12 year old boys.
So how do I like this book? Fine, for a devotional. I think that it is engaging and that boys will like to read it. I think you would need to plan carefully when devotion time is (for instance, right before bed would not be the best time to begin an experiment or get out equipment to make something cool). I DO wish that there was a little more application focus in some of the days. Some days it is easy to understand how the verses and themes apply to your life, other times it's a bit more difficult. I guess it comes down to a couple of things. This is a good age to begin a habit of daily Bible reading and prayer, and I think that this book is a book that will encourage a boy to begin and stick with that habit. I have a preteen boy and we have seen several different devotionals for boys this age -- some I like better than this one, some not so much. I guess I'd give this a 4 out of 5 rating and hope that it helps to instill a good habit of spending time each day with the Lord.
I received this book from the publisher for free in exchange for writing a review. I was not required to write a positive review.
