Though mildly predictable, it is a good improvement over its predecessor
By Jonathon D. Burns
The Betrayal by Jerry B. Jenkins

After leading the sting to bring down one of the most notorious gangs in Chicago, life should be feeling sweet for Boone Drake. And it would, except for a minor detailing like sustaining a serious gunshot wound to his shoulder and learning that someone is suspecting his girlfriend, Haeley, of leaking classified information. Hiring the best defense attorney Boone knows of, he is determined to prove Haeley innocent. To discover otherwise would truly be a betrayal of the worst kind.

Those who read my review of The Brotherhood may remember that I was not too fond of the book. Too many times it felt cheesy and I felt the Christian element felt more forced than natural. So why did I read the sequel to a book I didn't like? Despite the cheesiness, the story held some promise and it certainly ended on strong note considering the rest of the story.

Unlike The Brotherhood which started slowly and had some pacing issues, The Betrayal has a strong opening and keeps up a brisk pace for the majority of the story. One of the things that helped was that each of the major characters had strong goals. In The Brotherhood, Drake had a goal, but the rest of the characters were much more passive. Here they are all pursuing a goal, and that goal is much more pressing.

Though mildly predictable, Jenkins still made me feel connected to the story, which can be hard when I didn't enjoy the first one. Though not an amazing cop story, The Betrayal is a good improvement on the first. If you enjoyed The Brotherhood you will likely enjoy this one, and if you didn't like The Brotherhood, you may be surprised.

Another Jenkins "Must Read"!
By Nate
Just finished reading an advance copy of Jerry B. Jenkin's book "The Betrayal." It didn't take long to read because I couldn't put it down! This usually happens with Jenkins' novels. I have his entire Left Behind series and this will be a wonderful addition to my library. This mystery novel follows detective Boone Drake as he unravels the clues behind a near-fatal attempt on the life of his mobster star witness. While protecting the witness, Boone is shot, then framed for the incident. As he chases down the leads, who can he trust? Is there a mole within the police department itself? Can he trust his current love interest or friends? Each new clue uncovers a new twist. His faith is tested as he painfully races against time to protect his witness, clear his name, and identify the culprit. You won't be disappointed with this book. Thank you, Jerry, for another suspenseful novel portraying a life-like hero with true grit, faith, and tenacity!

Fast-paced crime drama of good vs evil
By Lindsay
This book is definitely fast paced. The whole book takes place in about two weeks, so you're not given much time to connect with the characters before you're thrust into the drama. After starting the book I realized it was a sequel, and I felt a bit clueless and out of the loop for the first few chapters.
As the plot moves along, the main character, a cop named Boone Drake, faces betrayal and treachery in friendships, relationships and even amongst the "brotherhood" of the force. However, since I did not read the first book and was not familiar with the characters, it was really hard to distinguish whom I was supposed to trust and for whom I should be rooting. So I would definitely suggest reading the first book beforehand if you're interested in this story (I have not done it yet, but I'm sure it would've improved the book greatly if I had).
That being said, I did enjoy the fast-paced drama and it was definitely an enjoyable and entertaining read.
