Wonderful for young children

Wow! I am not a big fan of the NLT Bible translation but this one has really made me think twice, a great Bible especially if you have children. We've been using this Bible to do our Bible reading for our school days and it is able to hold all three of my children's attention, ages 8 1/2 down to 4 years old. The reading is easy and is simple for them to understand and grasp, my 8 1/2 year old thinks it's almost to young for her but she likes the activities in it. It's made it much easier to understand the generations listed in Genesis from Adam without having to explain begat to the children.
The hands-on activities are a wonderful addition and when we have time in our studies I throw the activities in as they corespond to our curriculum and the day's Bible reading. Anything that helps to bring about Scriptural understanding and drive home the facts that the Bible is still an excellent and time tested source for living is a winner in my book. I really like the slipcover that comes with it as it makes me feel as if it's not getting a beating on the shelf and from frequent handling.
Even if you're not an NLT fan I still say to give this Bible a chance or use alongside your preferred version to make it easier for young children to grasp concepts until they're older. An excellent resource for family devotions or to include, as we did, with your Bible curriculum for the day - this is a great way to fit in Bible reading and comprehension so that your children will keep God's Word in their hearts.

For Families to Read, not For Early Readers To Read on their own...

Before I begin, I think this is a Bible for Families, Not for Kids to read on their own. The size of the font is very small and I think it would be very difficult for most 6-8 year olds to read. I realized after reading several reviews that I just assumed it was for families and not for kids because of this! If you're looking for a larger size font with easy to read language, I recommend the Discoverer's Bible for Young Readers NIrV Discoverer's Bible for Young Readers
That being said, I do like this Bible for families because of the features of this Bible. If I were simply choosing a Bible to read as a family, without concern about which translation it is (because my family doesn't normally read the NLT), then I would definitely choose this one. I really liked the activities and ideas of how to convey different ideas to your kids. I would say that this Bible is good for families with children ages 5-12. This is a very contemporary take on how to connect kids to the Bible and more importantly God yet also understand the time in which the people in the Bible lived.
The language in many of the comments and side notes in this Bible that I'm reviewing is very "modern". Here's an example from one of the things to think about: "Adam and Eve messed up big time by disobeying. Then they tried to hide from God. Duh!" but later in the same note... "God didn't need fingerprints to bust Adam and Eve. God sees everything. But God wants to forgive us--that's why he sent Jesus. When we believe in jesus and tell God we're sorry, he'll wash away our sins!" from p. 7 Hands-On Bible (NLT).
On one hand, I like the simplicity of the explanation--it's great for kids! But, on the other hand, we just don't talk like that in our house. We don't say "Duh!" and I suppose that in our family we just aren't as casual about how we talk about the Bible.
But, that same note had a great, quick activity in which kids put their fingerprints on a white piece of paper. There's a great comment about how our fingerprints are on everything. Eventhough they can't be seen, they are there. (paraphrase from pg. 7) and then it leads into the second part of the comment I quoted above. I think it's an awesome connection for kids! It's an easy way to do an activity with them and make an impression on them to help them understand about Adam and Eve. There are so many simple activities in this Bible like this one and that's why I do like it a lot!
This Bible is one of those books that I think would be wonderful for a lot of families. I think you'd really enjoy it and get a lot out of the extras--they would help build memories and start discussions. If you're looking for a Bible to give a family with new believers or with young children as an outreach, I think this is a great Bible to give! I'd give it 4.5 stars just because it is marketed for kids (many of whom this age I think would have a hard time reading it themselves) rather than to families. I wish the font size was bigger--then I'd give it 5 stars.

Relevant & Rockin' Awesome!

The new Hands-On Bible in the New Living Translation is the hands down best adolescent Bible I've ever seen! I am beyond excited for the children who will be owners of this incredibly bound, fun-filled Word. Not only are the pages visually exciting, but they are filled with fun projects to do with your hands (crafts, science projects, snacks, activities). I think this idea will help put to memory the things in God's Word and also help the kids to see scriptures relevancy.
Another really great thing I've found are the 'Bible Bio's' from hero's like Abraham. There is even a section that explains the Old & New Testament books- The Pentateuch, History, Poetry, Prophecy, Gospels, Epistles, Revelation. There are even time lines that are easy for kids to understand in the introductions of books. 'Cool facts' teach you things like how high Noah's ark was compared to a house. Then there are area's to learn it, do it, share it, and live it spilled out through the pages of the Hands-On Bible. I even found myself learning new things out of the Bible through my reading in it for review!
The best part of all are the areas known as 'The Jesus Connection' which helps you to discover how the focus of the Bible is Jesus. I love how Hands-On Bible encourages your children to have their own relationship with the Lord and His Word. If you have a child(ren) who are bored with their present Bible or you just want to bless them with a new & exciting one to help grow their faith & relationship with the Lord through His Word run out and get them Hands-On! You won't be sorry you did!
