Short and challenging

What Did Jesus Really Mean When He Said Follow Me? by David Platt is a very short book—really a booklet—with a lengthy title. The audiobook version lands at about 45 minutes, which is shorter than some of the sermons I’ve heard from Platt. However, there is a lot of theological depth and practical application packed into a small package.
Some have called this book an evangelism tool. I think it may occupy its own genre as a “re-evangelism tool.” My understanding is it re-iterates many of the concepts put forward in the longer Platt book, Follow Me. That book and this one seem to be addressing those who consider themselves Christians because they have “prayed a prayer” or been born into a Christian family, yet they are not defined by transformed desires and whole-hearted devotion to Christ.
This is a book about true discipleship flowing from a deep understanding of the redemptive work of Christ. It serves a powerful purpose as a way to check your Christian “pulse.” Are you dying to self more each day as Christ consumes more and more of your spiritual vision? I know I came away challenged.
This would be a good book to buy a few copies of (audiobook or print) and hand out to a small group to read and discuss. Lloyd James does a good job narrating, and the audio is short enough that it could fit on one CD for listening to in the car.
Definitely worth the read, and highly recommended.
