The work of TIMOTHY R. BOTTS reaches back to letterforms as old as the first century and combines them with contemporary graphic design principles to express the meaning of great words. Interweaving background, text, and image into one, he strikes a balance between visual expression and legibility to give a face to that which is spirit. Botts earned a BFA in graphic design from Carnegie-Mellon University, during which time he apprenticed in calligraphy with Arnold Bank. He spent three years in Japan teaching conversational English and was influenced by the rich tradition of Japanese brush writing. Since 1972 he has designed more than 600 books for Tyndale House Publishers near Chicago, where he is an art director. Nine books of his own work have been published, including Doorposts, Messiah, and a Bible illustrated in his calligraphy. Botts is a part-time instructor at the College of DuPage and has taught workshops internationally. His work is part of the permanent collection of Chicago’s Newberry Library. He helped found and serves as artistic director for Masterpiece Ministries, which conducts an annual camp for high school students in the arts. Tim and his wife, Nancy, have three grown children and twelve grandchildren.
PATRICIA RAYBON, award-winning author of Tyndale’s I Told the Mountain to Move (a Book of the Year finalist in Christianity Today’s 2006 Book Awards), is also author of the critically acclaimed My First White Friend, which won a Christopher Award and a Books for a Better Life Award. Her personal essays have been published in the New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, USA Today, USA Weekend, the Chicago Tribune, and In Touch magazine and have also aired on National Public Radio. Wonderful Visual Experience
By C. L. Yarborough
This book has 52 African American spirituals, with the words to the songs, a reflective passage about the song, and a beautiful calligraphic letterforms painting. I personally liked the reflective passages that were written by the artist, because he would usually explain the process behind his art.
Some of the old spirituals were unknown to me, but many were familiar to me and would probably be familiar to you: Rock-a-My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham, We are Climbing Jacob's Ladder, Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho, Them Bones, Them Bones, Them Dry Bones, Go Tell it on the Mountain, He's Got the Whole World In His Hands, and This Little Light of Mine are among the more familiar songs. I found myself singing to my children while reading this book.
After reading it the first time, I went back and re-read the calligraphic letterform paintings. I love them. They are beautiful. They are art.
After reading this book, I have decided to purchase 2 copies for friends of mine. One person was a singer in a college choir. They sang many of these songs in performances. The other has suffered a devastating loss and I think this book will comfort her.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for an honest review.

Captivating and Beautiful
By Noah Arsenault
Not having explored calligraphy before, I find this book interesting. I found Botts' reflections more helpful than Raybon's, but the art was usually captivating, and very relevant. I liked learning about African culture in the small ways that it shone through in this book. In closing, I'd say this is worth buying only if you really enjoy calligraphic art, or have a fascination with African culture and Gospel songs.

Nice Coffee Table Book
By That Literary Lady
Bound for Glory is an excellent "coffee table" book. It's colorful pages and calligraphy draws readers in as they experience various poems based on spirituality and African Heritage.
From the infamous "Let My People Go" to "Come and Go With Me", you'll want to read every page of this beautiful poetry written by Timothy Botts and Patrica Raybon.
This conversation piece comes complete with a scripture index at the end. I recommend this book to anyone who loves poetry, anyone who is an African and Spiritual enthusiast, or anyone who wants to spark inspiring conversation.
