Brad Mathias thought everything in his family was fine. A busy, contented dad, he had vaguely noticed that Bethany, his middle child, had become withdrawn and moody, but he assumed it was part of being a “teen” and didn’t look any deeper. Until the night God spoke clearly to Brad and his wife: Ask her to reveal what she has hidden. They did―and learned the secret Bethany had been carrying, one that rocked their family to the core. In a desperate attempt to reach their daughter and to reconnect as a family, Brad and his wife piled everyone into the car and embarked on a wild, crazy, seven-thousand-mile, what-are-we-thinking trip across the country. As they drove, they realized how far apart they’d drifted, found unexpected blessings along the way―and journeyed together from pain and loss to recovery and redemption. In this book, Brad shares stories from the road about God’s grace, gives practical tips on what he learned about reconnecting as a family, invites you to consider your own epic journey as a mother or father, and calls you to trust wholeheartedly in the amazing love God has for your kids.

From the Author
I hesitate even to attempt this book, on many levels, but I feel compelled to share my family's story--of hard lessons learned, battles won and still ongoing--with fellow parents. Our story is told openly and with full transparency, leaving us vulnerable before you. We don't reveal this lightly, but we do it in hopes that it will offer some encouragement to other parents. We all share in the common struggle of being fathers and mothers. Together we're on a sort of parenting pilgrimage, a rite of passage every generation must complete.
This is the story of a family crisis that threatened one of our children. In the aftermath of that crisis, God took me on a profound personal journey, leading me to rethink much of what I thought I knew about being a good father and the actual goals of Christian parenting. Eventually he directed me to take my family on an extended road trip, and he used that experience--full of incredible natural beauty, hours in the car, and forced family togetherness in a way we hadn't encountered before--to speak to us individually and as a family...to bring us healing.
I am not a fan of formulaic how-to books for Christian living. This is not meant to be another three-point version of how to enjoy a better Christian life. I don't wish to give you a false hope of near immediate resolution to whatever crisis you face. I fear that many parenting books engage little but our need to do something to change our circumstances and avoid our pain. That is not this book's purpose. Instead, this book is intended to be an encouragement to any family who finds themselves in the midst of a crisis, or a growing concern over the condition of their family. It's specifically for those families who are feeling disconnected from each other and are looking for ways to reconnect at a heart level. If that sounds familiar, this book is definitely for you.
My hope is for you to be inspired to press on with your calling of being a parent. I want to challenge you not to give up or settle for living in survival mode, and to help you avoid being just another wounded, weary, and wary of ever doing so again kind of parent.
My goal is to help parents look beyond the external symptoms to the heart level. Through my story, I want to help you see your kids as they are, as multidimensional, unique individuals who need your love and attention or, simply put, your time. I want to remind you of the difference between kids who appear to be okay and pay lip service to Christianity and those who are genuinely being drawn into their faith by a growing understanding of the overwhelming love God has for them. I want to inspire you to parent out of love and a commitment to gain a genuine connection with your kids, instead of out of debilitating fear and a desperate desire to "get it right." I hope you get a glimpse of what it means to be an authentic parent, even when your past choices--like mine--have not made you the perfect role model.
As I tell our family's story, my prayer is that these hard-won insights will be deposited solidly in your mind and hearts. The principles we have discovered have their roots in the Bible and are helpful in every human tragedy and triumph. The truths I've referenced are ancient and remarkable, capable of guiding and directing the most desperate and cynical among us to new hope and life and faith in Christ. The experiences from my own life are intended to encourage everyone to get up and try again, no matter how messy your circumstances or your past.
I believe it will take parents pursuing God diligently and sincerely to change our world, starting in our first missionary field: families. We cannot trust to the efforts of others to educate and engage our own children's hearts to the truth of God and his plan for their lives. We are responsible for keeping our families on the sure road of true life, and we must not be asleep at the wheel. With God as our help, we can overcome dangerous conditions, unfamiliar roads, distractions, and bad weather. May God richly bless you on your own parenting pilgrimage, your own road-trip journey as you seek to lead your families in the most amazing adventure of all.
Peace and Grace to you,
Brad Mathias

It is never too late to re-connect with your kids
By Alicat
Brad Mathias and his wife Paige are shocked to the core when their teenage daughter reveals a terrible secret. Reflecting on this incident, they both learn important lessons about being godly parents. Brad has always been a nature lover and God plants the idea in his head to take his family away into the wilderness on a road trip. At first, he dismisses the idea - who would be crazy enough to take 3 teenagers away for 2 weeks, confined to the inside of an SUV? But he proceeds with the plan and the family enjoy a wonderful time of re-connecting with each other and with God.
The first half of this book explores the relationships between Brad and his wife, and between both parents and their children. As a parent, I got a lot of out of this section of the book - especially the reminder that my parenting shouldn't be dictated by fear, and that we witness the most to our kids not by what we say, but how we back it up with our actions.
The road-trip takes up the second half of the book and made me long to go to North America to experience the beauty that is described (without the tornadoes and potential to meet grizzly bears!)
The book deals with serious topics, and is a cross between a parenting book and a travel blog - It was different to other books I've read and I enjoyed it. I especially liked how open the whole family was about their struggles and the way God has been working in their life. It was quite inspirational. I also enjoyed the photos scattered throughout the book.
Some reviewers have criticised the book saying that not many families in the US could afford such a trip. Others have said that the road-trip was too ambitious and too dangerous. I didn't get the sense that the author was suggesting this kind of trip would suit everyone - it is really about spending quality and quantity time with your family, enjoying God's creation.
This is a great book for parents with kids of all ages, showing it is never too late to re-connect with your kids.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for a free review copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Roadtrip to Redemption
By Elizabeth Cundiff
Roadtrip to Redemption is a story about one man's journey to bring his family healing after a family crisis. The author started his story be recounting his failures as a husband, father, and Christian that almost resulted in divorce. He explained that the near divorce caused some major problems in his family, especially among his children. After he and his wife reconciled, the author thought that all was well until he started noticing some behavior changes with his youngest daughter, Bethany. At first, he thought her behavior was normal for a teenage girl and then as her behavior worsened, he thought that she was being defiant. Instead of seeing the danger and pain that his daughter was going through, he attempted to change her behavior through the normal disciplinary actions that parents take with their teens. However, when he and his wife confronted Bethany from God's prodding, Bethany confessed of a horrible incident that she had endured months earlier. Bethany's confession rocked her parent's life and faith to the core. Though the author did everything he could do to help his daughter, he realized that only God could heal her heart and make her whole. The author wrote how God laid it on his heart to take a 2 week road trip that would result in the healing of not only Bethany, but of his family too. The author explained that this road trip would be exactly what was needed for God to show Himself to each member of the family in a way that would draw them closer to Himself. During the story, the author explained how the road trip started out rocky due to severe storms that threatened their safety and caused fear for each family member. However, he went on to write that the storms taught him an important truth: storms are a natural part of life but God is in control and will lead them out of the storm in His timing, which is perfect. Despite the storms the family faced on the trip, each made lasting memories and saw some amazing sites from the scenic views of the Canadian wilderness, Indian reservation territory, to Yellowstone National Park, and the mighty Tetons. What was really cool about how this book was written was that the author included short excerpts from the perspectives of his wife and children. These perspectives were personal and showed readers how God was using the trip to work in their lives. At the end of the book, the author included a story written by each of his children and wife where they told, in their own words, how God spoke to them during the trip. I found this book to be refreshing because it reminded me that though I may struggle with issues in life and go through hardships, God is in control and that He can turn those hardships into something that is beautiful.

A story of redemption
By SandrasKitchenNook
After discovering their middle daughter had been molested, the Mathias family heads out on a seven-thousand-mile trip across the country in a desperate attempt to reconnect their family. This book tells their story.
Road Trip to Redemption, unfortunately, is an accurate description of a lot of "christian" families today. Parents who are so busy with their lives they aren't spending the time with their kids they need to, unchecked behavior from children, playing at church and christianity and expecting it to be enough to ground the kids in the faith...the list goes on. While I may or may not agree with the way he may do things with his family, just realizing the fact that going to a "hip" church once a week is not the way to grow you and your family spiritually is something that many still don't grasp. Your kids need a PERSONAL walk with the Lord. They need to see you living for Him and not just going through the motions at church and doing your own thing at home. I appreciate the honesty of the author that many of the issues in the family were his "fault" and not trying to pass the blame along.
One thing about this book that really got to me was the fact that they were strongly urged not to take legal action against the guy who molested Bethany for her "mental and emotional sake" and so nothing was done. It isn't clearly stated in the book exactly what was done to her, but that mindset is one reason so many sexual assaults aren't reported and these guys get away with it again and again. I had to wonder how many other girls this guy has assaulted and will assault in the future do to their inaction.
I really enjoyed the journal entries at the end of the road trip chapters that show the kids' different perspectives of the day. As a mother of four, I know that each child is different and will look on things differently. What one child may see as horrible or very boring, another may love it. One may see the small things--the eggs in the nest or the sun glinting off a leaf in a particularly gorgeous way--while another may be content to sit down and enjoy the awe-inspiring vista as a whole.
I was expecting this book to be more about the road trip itself, but the book was nearly half over before the trip ever began. The "back story" was way too long and drawn out. I appreciate the fact that some of it was needed, but it was drawn out so long that the trip that was supposed to be the whole point of the story felt incredibly rushed. I'm sure it felt like it in real life as well. For someone who is trying to do something to draw his family closer, nine-hundred-mile-a-day drives seems more than a bit odd, especially since he clearly states that they don't do well on 3 hour trips! I really felt sorry for his family. Their map-reading skills were another story. To look at a map and think you can drive from Sioux Falls to Rapid City in two hours made me laugh out loud. I drove that road many times when we lived outside of Rapid City, and you're lucky if you can make it in 5 to 5 1/2 hours--it took them six.
The trip descriptions were very disappointing as well. "Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is a nice town...or so I've heard. We didn't stay long enough to find out." Mt. Rushmore was barely described, Yellowstone was deemed "amazing", but very little description of the places they visited there and he seemed rather unimpressed with the Grand Tetons at all.
This book had some great possibilities, but instead it felt drug out for the first half, and seriously rushed for the last half. The trip itself that he seems to be pushing for families to do is well outside the budget for a lot of families. $300 to $450 per day might as well be $1,000 per day to many families. The "insights" at the end, while true are pretty basic. Don't be a hypocrite--live what you teach. Look for changes in the heart, not just behavior, pray, don't be guided by fear. You don't have to go on a super long, super expensive trip to learn this lessons. Get into God's Word and draw close to Him and let HIM lead you as you lead your family.
I received a copy of this book from Tyndale for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
