About the Author
Perry Noble is the founding and senior pastor of NewSpring Church in Anderson, South Carolina. At just 12 years old, the church averages more than 18,000 people during weekend services at seven campuses throughout South Carolina. In addition to teaching at his church, Perry is a nationally known speaker who travels the country to address thousands of people at conferences and other events. Perry and his wife, Lucretia, have one daughter, Charisse.

Step out & live life anew

Perry Noble does what he does well. As a Midwestern pastor I wondered if his book would connect well with me. I've listened to a handful of his sermons, and got to hear him speak on a couple of occasions now. He's always genuine and passionate when speaking, and that continues to come through in the written form. I didn't know if his Southerness would land for me - but it does quite well in a down-homey kinda way. Perry Noble is easy to connect to and relate to as he doesn't present false pretenses of being extra holy in any way because he pastors a large church. I appreciate that.
As for the book, it is a very interesting read. While I can't be quite as fanboy-esque in my review as many of the earlier ones are, I would not hesitate to recommend this book, and may well re-read it again myself.
It connect very well on a real life - day-to-day - kind of way. I appreciate the intentionality to write from a Christ exulting position rather than a man exulting one. The greatest strength in the book is that everything Pastor Noble speaks about seems to come from real life/ministry experience so it connects to my life and spiritual journey. While it is generally endearing, some may find the largely unfiltered mind dump style a bit grating after time. I find it moreso in his speaking than in his writing in this book, though it has never reached the level where I'd not listen to him again. Just an endearing idiosyncrasy to me.
The book is filled with quotable lines and thought provoking sections. And Noble doesn't leave it there, he challenges you to take it personally and apply his wisdom (and passion + sense of adventure) to your own walk.
I believe that most people would enjoy this book, and that it would serve as a spiritual 5-hour energy shot to most people's spiritual lives.

Insights from a changed life

So glad that Perry Noble took the time to put down these thoughts. This book is a great resource for those that have tried religion and found it lacking. If you see the spiritual moments in the ordinary then you will connect with Perry's insights into a relationship that leads to faith. No new thoughts in this work but the level of transparency will be refreshing to most readers. If your life feels like it could go faster, higher or better than take some time and give this a read.

Honest truths from a redneck Bill Hybels

I'm a long-time participating member of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, IL, where internationally-influential Bill Hybels is senior pastor. A few years ago, my wife and I happened to be in Anderson, SC for a couple of weeks, and attended Willow Creek Association member church Newspring while there. I was immediately impressed by Newspring's pastor Perry Noble, both for how much like the early Willow Newspring was in its explosive growth, and how culturally different Perry Noble's preaching was from what I was hearing from John Ortberg and Bill Hybels then back at Willow. For instance, Perry on one of those weeks was all excited about the start of deer hunting season, and I've never heard anyone at Willow even mention deer hunting. At the end of this year's WCA Leadership Summit, I remembered those Sundays, and suggested Perry Noble as a speaker for next year's Summit.
I think of Perry Noble as a redneck version of Bill Hybels because he covers much the same ground topically and theologically, but does so in an earthy way we rarely if ever hear, and thereby reaches a lot of people other pastors might never touch.
As a retired pastor myself, this book covers familiar ground in the lives of David, Peter, Paul and others, but like both Bill Hybels and John Ortberg does so far more effectively than I was ever able to myself. What sets Perry Noble's version of this material apart is how real and earthy are his personal illustrations. He takes serious personal risks by speaking honestly about embarrassing moments in his life, such as accidentally breaking wind in the face of a pretty cheerleader as a teen, being very overweight then and still over-tempted by ice cream stores now. He tells of his addiction to pornography, and how that was overcome. If you are a guy with embarrassing habits and temptations, Perry Noble definitely feels your pain.
As a result, this book speaks to real people with embarrassing problems in ways more conventional books by folks who "appear" to have their lives more together won't. It is one of only a few books I would happily offer an unchurched man as an introduction to what this Jesus thing is all about, and how that can make a positive difference when life gets hard.
