The Truth About Modeling Exposed

I've been a portrait and wedding photographer for 3 years and I REALLY appreciated the truthful exposure and insight into the modeling industry. I've been wrestling with issues like this for a long time. This challenges me, because I photograph many women, even some looking to get into modeling. It now saddens me to think of what they may be getting into.
The modeling industry is messed up. Can it be redeemed? Yes, but where most of the modeling industry leads to is further and further into being deceived and ends in destruction. Kylie points that out and tells a wonderfully written story of her journey of making it literally to the top (becoming a Victoria Secret Angel) and seeing it for what it really is. It's quite ugly.
I'm amazed how much a few words can change someone's perception of themselves, especially when it comes to complimenting or insulting someone's appearance. Words have so much weight. Kylie was told she was fat by a modeling agency when she was around 115 pounds and at the height of 5'10". Her mother even tried to convince her she wasn't fat, but she wanted to hear it from the agency.
My perspective on modeling, photography, women, beauty, and the deceitfulness of sin has changed (if not confirmed some of my thoughts).
I'm so glad that Kylie wrote this as I think so many women (and men) need to hear her story, and it's sweet to see how God is using her immoral past for her good. (Read Romans 8:28)
I'd encourage all women to read this! Women need to know where true, real, and lasting beauty comes from. They also need to be exposed to the fake lies of the media, fashion, and modeling.

Kylie's courage

Kylie Bisutti's autobiography, I'm No Angel, offers both a fascinating look into the realities of the modeling world and a frank account of her struggle to own her Christianity in front of that world. When the conflicts between the two sides of her life became too great, she chose to walk away from everything she thought she had wanted in order to honor Christ. Now she serves as a model in a completely new way...a role model to girls who are given antibiblical messages every day about what it means to be a woman.
Born in a small town to a blue-collar family, Kylie grew up loved by and committed to her family. At fourteen, she began modeling in Las Vegas and was quickly swept into a culture that ruthlessly leapt to make her appear older and more worldly than she was comfortable with; however, she quenched whispers of conviction for what she thought was the greater good of fame and money. Finally, after marrying a godly man who prayed for her as she lived with one foot in two worlds, she made a decision that would change the direction of her life forever.
Kylie made a commitment to Christ at a youth group her freshman year in high school, the only place where she felt completely accepted for who she was rather than what she looked like. However, as the book advances, we journey with her on the long road between that beginning commitment and its completion several years later when, after reaching the top of the modeling industry as a Victoria's Secret Angel, she left it all "to become a Proverbs 31 wife."
I read this book in three days, which for a homeschooling mom with a full house of responsibilities is a big deal. Especially because I am involved with youth ministry at my church, I was eager to hear what she had to say to girls who are told they must be thin, underdressed and overly made up to have significance. I enjoyed the Bible verses that began every chapter with a perfect reflection of her transformation. The 30 day devotional at the end of the book offers young women an indepth look into their biblical identity.
I was blessed also by her willingness to be vulnerable with her failings so that the young girls who read this book will know she is "real." I commend her for her honesty and courage despite the blastings she has taken from the world for her decision to stand for Jesus and marriage. I highly recommend this book, and encourage all who read it to pray for Kylie and the work God has planned for her testimony.

Piercing the Darkness

A "MUST READ" FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL AGED YOUNG WOMEN.
If I were still teaching middle school confirmation at church, I'd put this book into the hands of every young woman in my class. Ms. Bisutti and her husband Mike (They are clearly a team) courageously shine a bright light into the spiritual darkness that would seduce everyone. I say "everyone" because it isn't just young women who are being overwhelmed with the idols of the overly sexualized fashion industry. Young men are being inundated with the counterfeit images of beauty as well. In short, none of us are immune to its harmful effects.
I especially appreciate that Ms. Bisutti didn't simply focus on the pitfalls of embracing counterfeits. She also devoted a good portion of her book on how to experience the Good, the True, and the Beautiful through a relationship with God.
It is a wonderful, easy-to-read book that is especially suitable for young women. I would encourage older, more mature men to also read the book and share its lessons with the young men in their lives. I certainly intend to do so with my son someday.
