Sticking Points: How to Get 4 Generations Working Together in the 12 Places They Come Apart, by Haydn Shaw

This is the first time in American history that we have had four different generations working side-by-side in the workplace: the Traditionalists (born before 1945), the Baby Boomers (born 1945-1964), Gen X (born 1965-1980), and the Millennials (born 1981-2001).

Haydn Shaw, popular business speaker and generational expert, has identified 12 places where the 4 generations typically come apart in the workplace (and in life as well). These sticking points revolve around differing attitudes toward managing one’s own time, texting, social media, organizational structure, and of course, clothing preferences. If we don’t learn to work together and stick together around these 12 sticking points, then we’ll be wasting a lot of time fighting each other instead of enjoying a friendly and productive team. Sticking Points is a must-read book that will help you understand the generational differences you encounter while teaching how we can learn to speak one another’s language and get better results together.

From the Back Cover
“Why can’t they stop texting and make eye contact?”
“What’s wrong with leaving work early and finishing up at home?”
For the first time ever there are four generations working side by side in America’s workplaces:

  • Traditionalists (born before 1945)
  • Baby Boomers (born 1946–1964)
  • Gen Xers (born 1965–1980)
  • Millennials (born 1981–2001)

Having four generations in the workplace is revealing surprising generational differences, which popular business speaker and generational expert Haydn Shaw calls “sticking points.” These sticking points lead to misunderstanding, irritation, and stereotyping that hurts results and gets teams stuck.

There’s no need to remain stuck.
In Sticking Points, Haydn Shaw, using humor and pointed examples, shows you how to apply a five-step process to the twelve sticking points where the four generations tend to come apart. Sticking Points is a must-read book that will help you understand the generational differences you encounter while teaching all of us how we can learn to speak one another’s language and get better results together.

Unique information and a fascinating read
By J. Wright
The gist of this book is that there are four generations working in the work place right now, the Traditionalists, the Baby Boomers, the Gen Xers and the Millennials and this is causing some major "sticking points" in work culture that would easily be resolved with some understanding and adjusted expectations. I've never read a book like this in all the leadership books I've ever read and this book was beyond fascinating. Shaw has studied the different generations and regularly give presentations to companies about how to navigate these generation waters. The author has obviously grasped the differences clearly and in a non-judgemental form. No one generation is presented as better or worse than the other and all are called to understand one another. From a strictly sociological perspective, this book was beyond fascinating. As a leader, though, I have gained so much insight into different relational issues I've encountered and saw the role that generational differences have played.

As a Christian book reviewer, I highly recommend this book, both for church leaders and secular leaders. While there is no Christian or Bible content, the overall message of accepting and understanding one another and our differences is huge in the life of a Christian and this book gives information that can help us do that.

I received this book free of charge from Tyndale House Publishing in return for my honest review.

Enlightening!
By Paula Greene
I’m a Gen-Xer (born between 1965-1981), my supervisor is a Millennial (born after 1981), and my co-workers span three generations (and at the edge of a fourth) at opposite ends. While I had considered the varying personality types to appreciate our differences, I had not thought much about our differences in terms of age/generation. It is now common to have multiple generations in the work place (and in the church) working side by side and finding areas where they get stuck in getting along and understanding each other.

Haydn Shaw’s book Sticking Points: How to Get Four Generations Working Together in the 12 Places They Come Apart breaks it all down and then provides the solutions. In the first part of the book, he explains why each generation is the way they are from what they have experienced in their lifetime. In the second part of the book, he shows how we can look for ways to leverage strengths instead of getting stuck in the differences.

At the end of each chapter in the second part of the book, Shaw provides a bullet-point summary of what each generation thinks and why on topics such as decision-making, dress code, communication, meetings, feedback, training, respect, work ethic, etc. Browsing through these summary points with co-workers in the break room was entertaining and enlightening! The best part of the book is that it does not knock or elevate any single generation, but shows the good in them all.

This book is not only enlightening, but also provides solutions. I highly recommend this book for both leaders and for people who work on teams with multiple age groups, whether in the marketplace, volunteering, or even family gatherings.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for my honest review.

Good Business Book with Helpful Thoughts for Church Leaders
By Adam Faughn
Subtitled "How to Get 4 Generations Working Together in the 12 Places They Come Apart," this is a business and leadership book that has great application in various areas. As a preacher, I read the book and kept thinking of applications in the church that would be helpful for us all to understand.

The overall premise of Haydn Shaw’s book is that there are four generations in most work-places (and, now, 5 in the home), but those generations see many basic things very differently. For example, older generations value meetings, while younger generations would rather just get an email with the information so they do not have to stop working to go to a meeting. Other areas that are discussed include dress code (which is a fascinating chapter), loyalty to an employer, training, and work ethic.

The beginning of the book is must-read material for those who want to understand why the various generations have certain mindsets. Elders would find great material here for understanding the generations in their congregations. The most interesting chapter, to me, was the chapter on work ethic. We hear all the time that younger folks don’t have the same work ethic. This chapter blows that out of the water, but points out that the Gen-Xers (of which I am one) and Mellennials want to work in very different ways and structures than older generations.

Though the book is a bit repetitive, there is great insight to be gained from it. Business leaders will want this book, but there is a lot of value for church leaders, too.
