Great devotional book

My Grandma and Me by Crystal Bowman
My boys love to snuggle on their Grandma's lap and read a good book, so when I saw this book I thought it would be great to get for them to share together. This little book of devotions did not disappoint! There are 26 mini devotions consisting of a bible verse, a short but sweet poem, and a prayer or a song to be sung to a familiar tune. Topics for the devotions include God's creation, God's love and protection, God's greatness, prayer, faith, the Bible, showing love, and of course Jesus' love for us in his death on the cross. The devotions are simple and sweet, and allow grandmothers to easily open up conversations with their young grandchildren about all of the great and wonderful things we can know about God and Jesus. I was impressed with the level of teaching that was able to be brought out in such a short book of devotions. The topics are presented simply enough for even the youngest of readers.
Even though I am not a grandmother, I sometimes will pick up this book and share the devotions with my boys myself. They like to look at the pictures and listen to the wonderful rhymes. The topics are presented simply enough that my 2-year old son can understand and ask questions and even sing or pray along sometimes. The fact that the songs are to tunes that they already know makes the verses even more endearing.
I have already encouraged grandmothers that I know to look into getting this book to share with their grandchildren. What better way to bond with your grandchildren than to share some beautiful times of devotion?

Must-have Book for Grandmas!

I fell in love with Crystal Bowman's new book, Grandma and Me, from the time I opened the envelope and saw the enchanting image of a grandmother and two children having a tea party as well as the enticing line about "rhyming devotions for you and your grandchild." This book is a perfect marriage of music, scripture, devotional readings and art, which will bless and teach not only the grandchildren to whom you read it but your own soul as well.
The songs in the book are based on the piggyback song concept of putting the words to unfamiliar material (like scripture verses) with the tune of songs which most kids know and enjoy. Because they already know the melody of the song, they need only learn the new words. Crystal Bowman has done an exceptional job of matching the poetry rhythm and meter to the melody of the songs she has chosen. You will find songs written to the tunes of "Jesus Loves Me," "The B-I-B-L-E," "Mary Had a Little Lamb," and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." It's been my experience that some piggyback songs can be a little challenging to actually sing because the words don't always flow with the music, but I did not find a single hitch in any of her tunes.
Each devotion includes a verse from the Bible as well as a short, easy to understand devotion and finishes up with either a song or a prayer. There is an addendum in the back that includes a simplified version of the 10 commandments, Psalm 23, the Lord's Prayer, and a Grandmother's Prayer/poem. There are also some valuable tips in the beginning of the book to suggest to grandmas who are separated by distance from their grandchildren ways to enjoy a spiritual relationship via Skype or other video chatting services or telephone.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants an easy, kid-friendly, interactive way to share their faith and values with the little ones in their families. The full-color illustrations will appeal to kids and the short, brief devotions are perfect for those shorter attention spans. My Grandma & Me

There is nothing more special than to sit down and read a book to my granddaughter. My Grandma & Me by Crystal Bowman is already a big hit with her and she is only two years old. Although probably more appropriate for an older child, she already brings me the book and listens when I read or sing the songs to her.
The book is beautiful with the illustrations created by Katherine Kirkland. They are colorful, but with a soft, pleasant appearance. Although the book has a nice hard cover, I would have preferred that the pages to be of stronger paper and tear resistant for younger children.
Each double-page devotion starts with a Bible verse, then a rhyming lesson, and ends with a short prayer or song. The songs are designed to be sung to familiar tunes. The rhyming devotions cover such topics as being afraid, saying you are sorry, caring for others, giving praise, giving thanks, and much more. The devotions are designed for the short-attention spans of children, but bring a wealth of important truths from God's Word in each paragraph. Bible verses are taken from various translations such as NIrV and ICB, but some are not marked for versions.
The author gives ideas on how to use the book including ideas for long-distance grandparents. At the end of the book is a section called Passing Down the Faith which offers The Ten Commandments, Psalm 23, and The Lord's Prayer, all of which I remember learning as a child. There is also a Grandmother's Prayer to end the book.
