Good potential, but a tad self-serving...

We have all been in that place where it seems like if just one more thing goes wrong, all of the walls are gong to cave in on us and we will get lost in the rubble. Most of us could even say that when we were at that place, we might struggle to still praise God in the midst of the mess. We know intellectually that He is good, always and forever, and that every detail of our lives is held in the palm of His mighty hand, but when we can't understand the why behind our circumstances, it is tempting to throw our hands up in frustration/sadness/anger/desperation/despair and walk away head in hands without so much as a blink heavenward. That's where Grumble Hallelujah by Caryn Dahlstrand Rivadeneira comes in.
Throughout the book, Rivadeneira discusses how to still find the praise in the troubles. How even if you have to grumble through your hallelujahs, you should still say them anyway. God wants us to turn to Him in our time of need. He works all things together for good and even when we can't quite see the good yet, we should remind ourselves that God is there to help us and that he uses every situation to give us a path that leads us closer to Him.
Overall, the idea behind this book is great. In some parts, it's a convicting reminder to remain steadfast in our faith and realize that hardships and trials can also bring glory to God and help us grow. And here comes the but......
BUT, I feel like the author comes across as rather shallow in her attempts to relate to the reader by sharing her story. Her portrayal of her troubles make her seem rather spoiled and whiny rather than someone who has overcome severe hardships. She spends quite a bit of time, in my opinion, coming across like a mainstream motivational speaker trying to sell her product rather than a Christian who is trying to point people to Jesus. She mentions over and over her other books. I don't know....I just feel like this book is one that has been written before, just with a different name on the cover. It is an easy read and not necessarily boring, but if you've read one self-help book, you've read them all. I want something a little more meaty than finding inspiration in facebook statuses.

Disappointment is Not a Sin

If most grown-ups are honest with ourselves, we know our lives are not at the point we would have chosen. Disappointing jobs, chaotic families, private lives in a mess and public life almost alien to us... you know what I mean. Yet for many Christians, we have no place less welcoming of our disappointment than religion. Surely God doesn't want us ensconced in false ideals, but what else is there?
Caryn Dahlstrand Rivadeneira believes Christians should feel free to grieve the lives we won't live and come to grips with the lives we actually have. To her, we have these lives for a reason, and if we don't know what that reason is, God certainly does. The trick is overcoming ourselves to reach a place of understanding. Our families, jobs, homes, and networks give us opportunities to live our faith.
The trick comes in understanding we don't face this problem alone. The lack of forthrightness in our church culture creates the illusion that we fight the good fight unaccompanied; but peer below the surface, and most of our Christian friends struggle as badly as we do. Instead of punishing ourselves, we should lament our lives, trust our shame and disappointment to God, and passionately seek how to live this life.
Rivadeneira bolsters this narrative with a sense of humor, narratives of her own struggle (which she admits is still in process and volatile), and anecdotes of how she and her friends reached a point of acceptance. A few too many such anecdotes come from Facebook status updates, suggesting a certain lack of research on Rivadeneira's part. But on balance, that only supports her claim that life bears its disappointments equally.
This humble pop theology contains the promise that our lives can make sense. It does not offer to solve all our problems for us, or make everything easy. Instead, it gives us the courage to entrust our disappointment to God, secure in the knowledge that God will turn it to better ends. If you've ever felt let down, even knowing that God promises so much, this book is for you.

Lamentations has been described as a book where "art and desperation" meet. The author gives reason to the "grumble" (because WHAT is the balance...where is the line drawn between the Israelites constant faithless complaining disobedience, and honest "using your words" to cry to God that THIS IS HARD?)
"The Lamenter's life stinks, and he's letting God know it. Throughout this poem he lambasts God for such things as walling him in, chaining him down, piercing his heart, and breaking his teeth with gravel. I'd be lamenting too. But the part that really gets me in this book goes like this:
I have been deprived of peace;
I have forgotten what prosperity is.
So I say, 'My splendor is gone
and all I had hoped from the Lord'
Lamentations 3:17-18
Here's what's so great. Not only is this guy grieving his and Israel's supposed to be's, but just after he writes--for God and the world to see--these devastating words of lost dreams and hope in God, he adds this: (and end quote)"
I remember my affliction and my wandering,
the bitterness and the gall.
I well remember them,
and my soul is downcast within me.
Yet this I call to mind
and therefore I have hope:
Because of the Lord's great l¢¾ve
we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
great is Your faithfulness. (19-23)

In this book you will find the thoughts of an honest "grumble-hallelujah-er" along with some very good challenges. Grieve. Let go of fear, expectation, control. Live satisfied. One of my favorite chapters was Live Mercy - Letting Go of Judgement. There is always "more" to the story (for every person you come in contact with).
"Mercy knows that life is hard and that everybody's got problems. Mercy knows that some people just need to be cut some slack. Mercy gives breaks. Mercy offers chances and opportunities...Mercy stops us from criticizing and judging and lashing out at people who disagree with us...Mercy doesn't see as the world sees, but as Jesus does...Mercy never turns bitter. It's a gift to everyone involved. And it's a great way to live."
