Faith Cathwell has one main goal when she volunteers to be a nurse during the Civil War and that goal is to find her best friend Shiloh. Shiloh is a free woman of color who was kidnapped five years before the war broke out and taken back to the South and sold as a slave. Faith, along with Shiloh’s sister Honoree, searched when and where they were able to do so, but were limited by fear for their lives as Faith is an abolitionist Quaker and Honoree is a free woman of color. Neither woman is safe alone in the South. They see their chance to get geographically closer to the South by volunteering their services to the Union as nurses, so they find themselves serving in an army hospital very close to the battles. They face disrespect and derision from many soldiers and doctors, but not all of them. Faith meets Colonel Devlin Knight when he comes to her asking her to tend his wounded cousin. He initially neglects to mention that his cousin is a Confederate soldier.
In return for her help, Devlin agrees to help her search for Shiloh. As they spend time together on occasion, both begin to quickly fall in love. However, Devlin keeps a slave and just knows he is going to die in this war. Faith cannot tolerate slavery and doesn’t understand how Devlin can fight for the North, but still own a slave. Despite their attraction to each other, they don’t see how there is a future for them. Faith’s deep religious holdings are foreign to Devlin as he has distanced himself from God. This is another obstacle for them to overcome. As the war rages on the battlefield, so does the struggle within each of their hearts.
I have thoroughly enjoyed each story in the Quaker Brides Series and encourage readers to get all three books. Each book can be a standalone story, but there are references to the prior stories. If you are like me and like to do things in order, then start with book one so you can get the background and history from the get go. I liked the setting and found reading about the Quakers very interesting. The romance in each story was clean, and I found the fortitude of these Quaker women amidst persecution and the struggles of life two hundred years ago or more was inspiring. The author has done her research, which made the story come alive for me as well as teach me something about this time period. I can’t wait to see what Lyn writes next!

A Well Researched Civil War Novel

For any fans of a well-research Civil War novel, this is the right book for you. Faith is the final installment of the Quaker Brides trilogy. The series began with Honor, an heir to a plantation in the South who loses her home because she refuses to compromise her convictions on slavery. She ends up marrying Samuel and moving to Ohio where they continue their struggle against slavery by helping in the Underground Railroad. The next two books are about her daughters Blessing and Faith. Faith is a determined young woman. Her good friend, Shiloh, a free black young woman was kidnapped and sold into slavery before the Civil War broke out. Now Faith is on a mission to find her and bring her home in the midst of a terrible war. Faith joins the Sanitary Commission as a nurse along with her friend and Shiloh’s sister, Honoree. Together they expertly nurse soldiers during some of the worst fighting in the Western theater during 1863 while they search for any clue about Shiloh. Into their lives come Colonel Devlin Knight and his slave, Armstrong. Although Dev is fighting for the Union, he refuses to free his personal slave convincing himself that he is protecting him.
I particularly enjoyed the amount of research that went into this book about the siege of Vicksburg. This is not generally the most studied topic for Christian Civil War historical fiction. It was also informative to read about the misguided, but conflicted attitudes many Northerners had about slavery. As in her other books, I enjoyed the portrayal of the characters Quaker beliefs . This was certainly a memorable read. My only regret is that it was the last in the series.

Faith Like a Mustard Seed

Religion, race and gender work against good friends Faith and Honoree, as they attempt to tend to the Union's wounded during the Civil War. Many things cause an uphill battle for them. Faith is a Quaker, and that denomination's stance against slavery have many people blaming the Quakers for starting the war. Honoree is African American, and despite being free-born, is often treated less than equal, even by the Union troops. Although both women are trained nurses, that profession did not have any respect in those days. Many doctors viewed them as little more than women with loose morals, and not helpful, but a hindrance, to have with the patients.
Both women keep persevering in their jobs because they have one goal in mind: find Shiloh. Years earlier, Faith's childhood friend, and Honoree's sister, Shiloh--despite being a free-born woman--had been kidnapped, and taken south to be sold as a slave. They have been following what few leads they have about where Shiloh might be. But at this point, Faith and Honoree must stay with the Union troops until they can find a way to safely investigate the areas that are still under Southern occupation.
As the Union pushes closer to Shiloh's possible location, Faith becomes friends with Colonial Knight. Although he is a Union soldier, the Colonial has had a slave for many years, although he claims he will be giving him his freedom very soon. Despite Faith's growing attachment for him, Faith does not see how it could work for them since they have such opposite viewpoints about slavery.
Other obstacles have occurred that make their search for Shiloh difficult. As winter approaches, even the Union camp is struggling with many hardships, and shortages. Faith and Honoree are pressured by their family and loved ones to return home where they will have plenty of food, and not have to live out in the elements. Both women have also faced dangerous situations since their search has taken place during war-time conditions. Faith and Honoree have to make a decision that they can live with.
This was an amazing book. To be honest, I did not think I would enjoy it at all, but was surprised by how quickly the story drew me in. The author did such wonderful research, that this seemed like this story was about real people instead of a fictional account. The personal struggles the main characters have, along with their faith in God, all ring true. Although this is book three in the Quaker Brides Series, this story stands alone. I highly recommend this 5-star book to anyone who likes Civil War or historical fiction, as well as, anyone who enjoys a well-written story.
