Love the words...not so sure about the pictures
By Victory Girl
My Review: When I had another opportunity to review a book with my soon-to-be teenage daughter, I was really excited and jumped at the chance. We both had a very positive experience reading Tindell Baldwin's "Popular", and I have heard so many wonderful things about Beth Moore, that I was looking forward to reading "So Long Insecurity, Teen Edition".

First of all, this book is more like a magazine. It has a lot of short articles and features topics like fashion, media, boys, popularity, etc. With tons of pictures, it is fabulous for even girls that don't really enjoy reading.

As a homeschooling mom of a very mature twelve-year-old, I felt really out of touch with what is going on in the "teen" world. I know I've seen teen girls around... but they certainly don't dress like the girls in the book. These girls, who were supposed to be portraying "average" teen-aged girls, looked more like models or girls who have an unlimited clothing allowance from well-to-do-parents. As a matter of fact, my daughter, who is normally her own person and truly happy in her own skin, went through a period of feeling insecure(!!!) after looking at the pictures and feeling that she was coming up short in the fashion department.

That aside, I really thought the written words and quizzes were really valuable. So, I realize that this book is trying to reach a certain audience, but I'm not so sure we were it.

My Daughter's Review: When I first saw this book, I thought, "Hey look at this book, it seems fun!" But when I read it, I was extremely discouraged. Beth Moore went on saying how models and girls you see in magazines are so fake, but if you look at the pictures, the girls have flawless skin, the newest clothes, perfect hair, etc. It made me think, "If real girls look like that, then you so ugly.".

Beth Moore had a lot of good things to say. The thing is that I am very secure, but when I read the the book it made me feel anything but.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a free copy of this book by Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for my honest opinion.

Beth Moore slightly hypocritical
By Best Life Mistake
I chose to review this book for two reasons. First, I completed the adult version of this Bible study with my ladies group at church and I was interested to see how it would be adapted for teenagers. Secondly, I have a 16 year old niece and I thought she would enjoy reading this book and benefit from it. I was excited to hear her opinion of the book.

This book is written in a magazine style approach. This was very appealing to my niece. It wasn't written in the typical narrative form like the adult version of So Long, Insecurity. Each article contains colorful pictures, surveys, scriptures with biographies of Bible characters and quizzes.

The book covers many topics that teenagers today are facing. They are topics that they may be afraid to come to their parents to ask questions. Boys, fashion, the media, gifts, skills and self-esteem are discussed. I recommend that the adult read a copy of the book as well so that both mother and daughter can have a conversation about topics that are relevant to teenagers.

My niece enjoyed the book and felt that it wasn't "boring" or "uncool." That is a rave review coming from a sixteen year old girl. She did say that it is not a thorough Bible study and not very "deep." It should be read like a magazine and that every teenager needs to be in the word for themselves.

In my opinion, one negative aspect of this book was the photographs. The spends a lot of time discussing self esteem and as women how we should not compare ourselves to the girls that are in teh media. They are often air brushed and made to look "perfect." Real girls look "real." Unfortunately, the girls pictured in Beth Moore's book are no different than the airbrushed, "perfect" girls pictured in secular media. There is not a pimple to be found in the book. She also talks about modesty yet the girls in her book are showing cleavage and wearing short shorts/skirts. It was hypocritical of her to include those photographs in her book.

I would give this book three out of five stars. I would not recommend it to very conservative Christian families because of the photographs.

Disclaimer: I received this book for free from the Tyndale House Publishing Company in exchange for an honest review.

Great read for teen girls
By Not Afraid of the Snow
I have been a Beth Moore fan from the first Bible study that I did of hers. When I saw the opportunity to review this book, I took the opportunity to check the book out. Listed below are some of the things that really stood out to me about this book.

Format
This book was written like a magazine. I really liked all the pictures and articles throughout. I think this helped keep things light while still getting a very valuable point across.

Message
Oh, how I remember those teen years of feeling very insecure. Not that that insecurity has gone away by any stretch, but hopefully, I know better how to deal with it :) The chapters have to deal with fashion, media hype, boys, popularity, tough stuff, gifts and talents, competition, and secure girls. All these things are facing teens today.

Biblical Focus
Every chapter ends with a lady in the Bible that the girls can study. Encouraging the girls to move away from this book to the Bible. The true source of security. I am glad for a God that provides for me security.

One of the deals about reviewing this book was that my teen daughter would also review this book. Well, since I don't have a teen daughter, I was able to convince one of my Sunday School girls to help me out. Below is what she wrote. Thanks, Becca!

So Long, Insecurity Teen Edition by Beth Moore is a great book for all teenage girls. She specifically addresses fashion, media hype, boys, popularity, hard things such as death, divorce, etc., gifts and talents, competition: all life issues we girls deal with. She quotes so many great Scriptures and talks about women in the Bible who went through some of these same life problems.
I have been homeschooled since kindergarten, and I have a wonderful mom who has taught me everything I know about how to be a Godly, secure woman. I have had all my insecurity questions answered before I needed to ask them. That has been such a blessing in my life! But it's not that every word in this book doesn't apply to me. I need to read books like these and to be challenged as much as anyone does. It is easy for me to have jealousy issues, especially about people having more money than me/my family. I am tempted to think that wealth = success. God used this book to remind me that true success only comes from Him.
"There is only one way we can be truly secure as women - and that's when we find our identity and contentment in Christ."
