Illuminating, convicting and transformative - I am a changed man after reading this book

As an Ivy League graduate and Chinese-American male, I had my own preconceptions before reading Chai Ling's book. I thought I knew everything there was to know about modern Chinese culture, having visited many different parts of China several times. But then I read Ling's book, and three things happened: I was illuminated about the real situation in China; I was convicted about my own apathy (and even endorsement) of what is happening; and I was transformed as I began to see the deep love God has for the Chinese people, from the ranks of the Politburo all the way down to the millions of $2/day peasants. Allow me to elaborate on each point:
Illuminated: Ling doesn't hold back at all, sharing her joys and sorrows, triumphs and defeats. She isn't trying to paint herself as a hero, and it is for this reason that I trust her account of what really happened in the spring of 1989, and what has followed since. I was struck by her earnestness, and also by the level of detail she uses throughout. She shares with an uncomfortable rawness the tragedy of what happened at Tiananmen--the mistakes of the democratic student movement and the failures of the government that mercilessly crushed the movement, literally, to death. Then, I was shocked by the account of what continues today through the one-child policy, a Tiananmen massacre every hour.
Convicted: I was convicted on two fronts--the first, that I have stood idly by while millions of women live under fear and oppression as a result of both the one-child policy and the culture of gendercide. Ling's account opened my eyes to the horror of what a population control policy really means; after all, how could you possibly enforce that policy except by forced abortions and forced sterilizations? Second, I was convicted of the role that men have played in the last century in basically forcing women to terminate their pregnancies. Ling shares candidly about her own four abortions, all the result of pressure from men and society. Here, it is not merely the government, but it is the culture that gives men authority over women's bodies, whether they be a girlfriend, a wife, or a daughter. As a man, I was convicted that I am at fault for this massive loss of life and the pain that we have caused women. We should be cherishing and protecting women, not oppressing and condemning them.
Transformed: It's easy to point the finger at others, but it's a lot harder to point the finger inward and allow God to do all the rearranging. Yet that's exactly what Ling has done. By the end of the book, I was angry at China--at its leadership, at its culture, at its men. And how much more should Ling feel deep hatred, resentment and bitterness! Instead, she has embraced the God of love and the God of forgiveness. Through Jesus Christ, she has found a way to forgive those who have hurt her, and to extend the love of Christ to all. That doesn't mean she's soft on injustice--on the contrary, the NGO she founded, All Girls Allowed ([...]) , is a living example of how Ling has channeled her convictions in a way that both protects the innocent while loving the guilty.
If you haven't yet committed your life to Jesus Christ, I encourage you to read this book and learn how Ling--after all that she endured--came to commit her life to Christ. If you are a believer, read this book to remind you of God's awesome power and grace, and then share it with your friends who don't know him!

"A Heart for Freedom" Rings True

The moving and inspiring story of a young Chinese student leader seeking political freedom in Tiananmen Square who finds it and much more years later through her encounter with God. Chai Ling tells how her spiritual freedom now compels her to confront the "one child" policy in China, an injustice for millions of families and especially their young girls.

Too emotional, failing to address the controversies around this famous/infamous student leader on Tiananmen Square in 1989

It's a pitty that the editor does not provide background info over all the controversies surrounding Chai. As the only recognizable female student leader, Chai has been widely criticized for her role during the tragedy, not from Chinese government, but from fellow student leaders. In a famous/infamous interview with the Associated Press during the movement, Chai said that blood needs to be shed to achieve freedom and democracy in China. When asked whether she is willing to shed her blood, Chai said her life is too valuable and she has more important thing to do in the future.
When tanks and troops entered Beijing city, finally surrounding the square when an ultimatum was issued demanding for the students to disperse, the students leaders were divided on how they should response. Most student leaders held that they should evacuate to avoid loss of lives, as it became clear troops would not hesitate to shoot them. But Chai argued for making a stand. According to some student leaders, she made a speech to students, calling them to confront the troops, and then fled before security forces closed in. Most students left the Square following other student leaders, but some students did make stand and was shot at in the following conflicts, leading many to criticize Chai for her hypocracy. The rationale of her choice seems to lie in a belief that shooting at protestors would bring huge intl' pressure which would push forward the movement. It is exactly the same menality shared by Mao Zhedong, that is a willingness to sacrifice huge number of lives for strategic gains. In this sense, Chai was more like a red guard than a freedom fighter perceived by the West.
After she fled, she wept in front of Western media and said she saw tanks runing over student protestors when they were still asleep, which is completely false to anyone who has witnessed or seen video clipping of that day. Fang Lizhi (or Hou Dejian, can't remember exactly whom, both prominent student leaders who left the scene till the last minute) openly criticized Chai, pointing out that she was not present when troops opened fired to protestors, and urged not to "use lies to refute lies." Other criticism include an allegation that she has embezzled much of the foreign donation made to the movement, which contributed to her later success in business. It may be no cooincident that Chai seems to be the only one who have achieved business success among all the students leaders.
Unfortunately, Chai failed to confront all these criticism in her book. Instead, she resorted to an emotional and sentimental style, claiming naivity of youth. Such a style deprives the book of credibility, as her obervation tends to be very subjective and selective. Proudly announcing her conversion to christianity, Chai claims that the book is not written "by" her, but "through" her, and it is "a book of ultimate truth." Well, it is far from it.
Chai's another strategy is to spend much of the book talking about her life before and after the Tiananmen square movemenet, which is valid only if she regains her credibility by providing an honest and geniune answer to the tough questions regadring her earlier role. Without it, the whole book seems lofty, but unconvincing.
For me, the book comes out too late. Chai writes that she decided to write the book two decades later because, again, that she has finally found the essense of her life in God, an approach fatal to a honest memoir. By finally finding an integral answer to her life, she wrote not what she thought when an event took place, but what she thinks when she writes the book, following a cohesive intepretation, "a heart for freedom". But life is never like that. Such a style sure makes a memoir sensational, or "gripping" as so many reviewers comment. However, it is far from the truth she claims. A fiction could be equally gripping. Chai sure does a good job linking her experiences with China's notorious one-child policy, but it is a topic already beaten to death by so many books. My guess is that Chai writes the book so late only because the tiananmen tragedy has become so iconic, that few remember, or are interested in the controversies surrounding her role in the movement.
For those who want to learn something about Chinese affairs, the book may bear some values. But be aware that it is a personal book written by someone who are detached from China (not her fault though, as she was unable to go back) for more than 2 decades, a period of great change in China. Some of her comments are ridiculous to anyone familiar with current Chinese affairs. For example, she writes about how efforts pushing for reforms have disappeared, and how Chinese are no longer interested in politics, ignoring all the basic facts can be found even in western reports of China, just to name Weibo and online outcry.
It is a pitty that people are eager to swallow whatever Cai writes, without questioning her questionable credibility. I bet many readers don't even know Chai, not Ling is her surname. The issue of democracy or freedom has so polatrized, that one can only be FOR or AGAINST freedom and democracy, whilee the truth is lost in between.
