About the Author
Patricia Raybon is the award-winning author of I Told the Mountain to Move, a 2006 Book of the Year finalist in Christianity Today magazine s annual book awards competition; and My First White Friend, her racial forgiveness memoir that won the Christopher Award. She is also author of the One Year(r) devotional, God s Great Blessings. A journalist by training, Patricia has written essays on family and faith, which have been published in the New York Times Sunday Magazine, Newsweek, Chicago Tribune, USA Today, USA Weekend, and In Touch of In Touch Ministries; and aired on National Public Radio. She is also a regular contributor to Today s Christian Woman online magazine.
With degrees in journalism from Ohio State University and the University of Colorado at Boulder, Patricia worked a dozen years as a newspaper journalist for the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News. She later joined the journalism faculty at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where for fifteen years she taught print journalism. Patricia now writes full-time on mountain-moving faith.
Patricia and her husband, Dan, are longtime residents of Colorado and have two grown daughters and five grandchildren. Founder of the Writing Ministry at her Denver church, Patricia coaches and encourages aspiring authors around the country and is a member of the Colorado Authors League and the Authors Guild.

The God's Great Blessings Devotional

This is a beautiful and moving book both inside and out. The imitation leather cover, green and simple yet lovely, is my new favorite type of cover and appropriately suggests that this is a book you want to keep close for use each day. A ribbon bookmark helps you keep your daily place, and the one page per day readings are just right for a few quiet moments spent reading and reflecting on Scripture and a story or example of one of the types of blessing in focus that week.
I love how Patricia chose a different form of blessing for each week of the year and then displays how others have demonstrated an aspect of that form and also encourages us in stepping out in new ways to do the same. What a wealth of material this one book contains.
Patricia is one of my favorite writers. (Take a look at her other books. They are eloquent, honest, and deeply moving.) Her new book follows in the same tradition. Her heart comes through in each day's writing and she has a way of helping readers see and understand as they probably have not before.
I began the book during a week looking at Wisdom and have most recently been reading on Service.Patricia tells about how her daddy taught her what wisdom meant when she was in life crisis. "You need to open your Bible. ... So I lifted the big Bbile from its place on my parents' coffee table and I opened it, surprised that the words of my recovery had been underlined years before with my daddy's black-ink fountain pen."
And on Service, she tells an amazing story about a young Kenyan who developed LED solar lights so that many in local rural villages can read and learn at night, giving them opportunities they've never had before. "Why tell Evans's story? To inspire our own. For as we take light to a dark world, people in darkness will see God."
Thank you, Patricia, for blessing us with new eyes to see the ways Jesus' abundant blessing can flow through each of us.

Substantial Content in Right-sized Portions

Patricia's knowledge of scripture and ability to tie it in to real life is extraordinary. She is unafraid to speak with boldness, and yet delivers it from a position of companionship, working out these Biblical truths in her life at the same time she shares them with us. What I love most about this devotional is its portions. It's short enough for even a busy mom of six to squeeze in every day, and yet substantial enough to both stretch and satisfy.

wonderful devotional book

If you are looking for a biblical, inspiring devotional for 2013, please consider "God's Great Blessings". I have been a fan of Patricia Raybon for years, and when I heard that she was writing a devotional, I knew I would love it! I bought one for myself last December, and when I received it, immediately ordered one for my grown daughter and niece. The scripture passages for each day are relevant and just the right length for our busy lives. The virtues she examines each week, i.e. gratitude, praise, hope and creativity, bring a new focus and different outlook on each glorious blessing from God. I am a little sad to come to the end of the year's study, so maybe will reread for 2013. Thank you, Patricia!
