From the Inside Flap
What Are You Afraid Of?What is it that immobilizes you? What is stealing your joy and destroying your hope? What is robbing you of sleep night after night? What keeps you from living by faith and taking risks? What keeps you from giving your life wholly to a loving God who wants nothing but the best for you?Regardless of your answer to these questions, one thing is absolutely certain: God is the answer to all your fears. If God is good and loving (and He is), and if God is all-powerful (and He is), and if God has a purpose and a plan that includes His children (and He does), and if we are His children (as I hope you are), then there is no reason to fear anything, for God is in control of everything. As you read this book, my prayer is that you will grow in your conviction that God is the answer to all your fears, that as you look to the future you will see nothing except His power and love guarding your every step, and that you will find the truth that sets you free to live the fearless life God created you to enjoy.--Dr. David Jeremiah

From the Back Cover
You Can Conquer Fear!
Everyone is afraid of something―failure, success, loneliness, crowds, death, life―the list is endless. And no one is immune to fear. Fear haunts the weak and the powerful, the young and the old, the rich and the poor. It is the great equalizer.

Some fears―hearing an unexpected noise in the night or encountering an icy bend in the road―attack us only momentarily, passing almost as quickly as they come. But others, such as contracting a deadly illness, being rejected by a loved one, or dying alone, can haunt us for a lifetime, taking up residence in our minds and eating away at our sense of security―and eventually taking over our lives.

Well, fear not!

There is hope. In What Are You Afraid Of? Dr. David Jeremiah identifies and explains what is at the heart of nine of our greatest fears and lays out a biblical plan for overcoming each one of them. He also examines one particular fear that should be part of our daily lives: the fear of God.

An encouraging resource
By Michael Lee
"What Are You Afraid Of?" is the newest release by Dr. David Jeremiah, addressing many fears common to Man. Each of the 10 chapters has a specific fear as its topic. Those are:

1) Disaster (natural calamity) -- You can read the 1st chapter PDF by clicking here.
2) Disease (serious illness)
3) Debt (financial collapse)
4) Defeat (failure)
5) Disconnection (being alone)
6) Disapproval (rejection)
7) Danger (sudden trouble)
8) Depression (mental breakdown)
9) Death (dying)
10) Deity (fear of God)

LIKES: Dr. Jeremiah is one of those long-standing, trusty teachers of God's word. He takes his ministry seriously, he's well-spoken, and he is highly respected. His books are often straight-forward and clearly understandable by his readers. Each and every chapter is chock-full of applicable scripture and numerous touching anecdotes and stories designed to encourage readers through their struggles. The book appears to be written with Christian readership in mind. But although a plethora of scripture exists, this one is still a book that may be well-received by non-believers.

FAVORITE CHAPTER: My favorite chapter was #5 - Disconnection: not because I struggle with this particular fear, but because Dr. Jeremiah drives home a crucial aspect of the gospel message. In the chapter, Dr. Jeremiah discusses the alone-ness experienced by Christ. Additionally, he addresses the utter loneliness that those apart from Christ will experience after death. It has long been my opinion that hell would not need even luke-warm flames.

Instead, the vast loneliness in outer darkness would be torment enough for the lost soul. No love, no interaction with others, no hope. Just utter darkness forever. Much has been documented on the psychological effects of solitary confinement on prisoners, but it pales in comparison to facing an eternity of solitary confinement. This chapter caused me to pause and consider the fate of the lost, and my responsibility to share the gospel with those around me.

DISLIKES: I disliked just one aspect of this book, and that is the exceedingly long chapters. The chapters were all an average of 25-30 pages long. While that may not sound all that long to university students accustomed to studying lengthy scholarly textbooks, it IS long when parents -- whose only chances to read come after the kids have finally run off to bed -- are the primary readership. And by that time, our minds are exhausted anyway.

Based upon this opinion, I think this book might find more value for a person struggling with one or two of these fears rather than just the casual reader. In that sense, the book serve as a loaner for the friend dealing with a particular issue. After all, anyone who has every one of these 10 fears is likely in need of more professional help than this book could ever offer. Therefore, it may also be beneficial for pastors or counselors who would like to have one more resource that serves as a primer on these deep psychological fears.

RATING: I give "What Are You Afraid Of?" 4 stars out of 5. It is well-researched and will certainly prove to be beneficial for many people.

Dealing with Fear Biblically
By Conny
Title: What Are You Afraid Of?
Author: Dr. David Jeremiah
Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.
ISBN: 978-1-4143-8046-9

"Think about it - fear is almost always based on the future. Sometimes we're afraid because we know what's coming in the future. But more commonly, we're afraid of what we don't know about the future. We're afraid of what might happen," Dr. David Jeremiah writes in his book, "What Are You Afraid Of? - Facing Down Your Fears With Faith."

At two hundred and twenty-eight pages, this paperback book is targeted toward young and old adults who are dealing or have dealt with fear and want to overcome its strong grip on their lives. With a Christian emphasis, mainly the New King James Version of the Bible is used with four other versions included.

With most fears in teenagers being terrorist attacks, spiders, death/being killed, not succeeding in life/failing, war, heights, crime/violence, being alone, the future, and nuclear war, Jeremiah stresses fear is usually future-based and that we should focus on God instead of our fears.

Within ten chapters, the writer breaks fear into ten "D" sections: disaster, disease, debt, defeat, disconnection, disapproval, danger, depression, death and Deity. Addressing each individually, the reader who has a fear of natural calamity, illness, financial loss, failure, being alone, rejection, trouble, mentality, dying or God can focus on that specific type for guidance.

Using ample Biblical applications of Old and New Testament, Psalms is mentioned often along with characters such as Job, Moses, Joshua, King David, Hezekiah, Paul, Peter, and, of course, Jesus. Also included are thoughts on fear from writers and preachers such as Alcorn, Eareckson-Tada, Lewis, Spurgeon, Thoreau, and Wesley to name a few. Past and present events that produce fear are used as examples and how God uses them as He wills.

As Jeremiah walks the reader through each fear trigger-point, he promotes God's promises, purpose, and protection that He gives endlessly and mercifully to us. If it is disobedience, depression, or death, God is our refuge and is to be the One greatly feared, not the things of this world.

As we all face some type of fear, be it great or small, this book is a helpful tool to use in conjunction with the Word of God to focus on Christ when fearful. As it states in Psalms, fear will be abandoned when we "Commit your way to the LORD, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass" as we face our earthly challenges.

Fear Is The Opposite Of Faith!
By John McLain
David Jeremiah gets to the root of fear. He covers most of the fears people suffer from and offers ways to combat a
fearful heart. It was very helpful to me. Lifted my spirit and gave me hope.
