About the Author

Warning

I recently purchased this book for a young woman who lost her lower arm and had extensive facial injuries in an accident, after seeing Lauren Scruggs story on Good Morning America. Was so glad I read the book before I gave it to her. I decided to return it, as it would be more discouraging than hopeful for my friend. She and Lolo are on the same page spiritually and physically, but that's about all their lives have in common.
Lolo and family clearly have support systems and resources this single working mom never will know. She would have envied Lolo's wardrobe of prostheses alone, much less all the therapists, trainers and coaches. Hair extensions? We only wish!
My friend is stuck with what her budget and insurance would cover--a shaved head until we could cut it stylishly short and standard hook that frightens her two year old so much they both cry when she puts it on.
With no disrespect to Lauren Scruggs, this is NOT the book to share with someone who is faced with a similar disability who has only a fraction of Scruggs' support system and financial resources. Barely skims the surface of the psychological trauma or practical living with life altering injuries.

Interesting book, had some issues

I recently read Still Lolo by Lauren Scruggs, the Scruggs family, and Marcus Brotherton. I had heard about Lauren Scruggs in the media and was interested in reading the whole story about what had happened to her, so I chose this book. In December 2011, she took a short plane ride to look at Christmas lights over Texas and walked into the propeller blades while disembarking the plane. Several surgeries followed, and she miraculously survived, mostly intact. Still Lolo skips back and forth between Lauren, her twin, her dad, and her mom. It details her childhood, her parent's marriage troubles, her life as a young adult, and of course, the accident and recovery period.
I have to be honest about this book, but I'll detail the parts I liked about it first. This book was a very quick read (I read it in about 24 hours), definitely a page turner (since it kept flipping perspectives, you wanted to keep reading to find out what would happen next), and very interesting. Honestly, the most compelling part to me was about the homeless man her dad picked up who wrote the amazing predictions about their lives. I found that the most touching and interesting part of the entire book. I really enjoyed reading the portions about her parent's marriage struggles, divorce, and remarriage. I really want to read their book now.
However, this book definitely had some issues. A major one for me was that the family seems to be at a high income level (huge houses, expensive neighborhoods, designer clothes, vacations, expensive colleges, etc. etc.). I absolutely cannot relate to this and it kind of put me off. Then towards the end of the book, I was shocked at her dad saying how he barely makes any money and they couldn't afford her medical bills - while Lauren's buying new designer clothes, getting her nails done, getting hair extensions, and going on a vacation. Definitely kind of a turn off.
Then there's the issue that Lauren seems to be absolutely obsessed with her looks - clothes, hair, makeup, nails, you name it. It seems at odds with Christianity to be so obsessed over physical appearance. Now, the book does address this and says that she began counseling with a Christian program and some different things and is learning to let some of this go. However, it seemed a bit odd and I had trouble relating with portions of the book.
Overall, it was definitely interesting and exciting to read. I'm sure some people will be able to relate with it more than others, though. It was worth reading for the meatier portions.

a good, inspiring read, even for non-Christians

I bought this book somewhat reluctantly, worried that it would be too preachy for me to enjoy or relate to. I was pleasantly surprised to find that, while there is a good deal of discussion about Lauren's faith and the Scrugg's family's faith, it is not a preachy book. It was inspiring on many levels: the story of Lauren's parents and how they came back together after seven years of being divorced (a divorce that was pretty bitter to begin with) and the story of how the community pulled together to help the family through this crisis were great subplots and inspiring on their own. You definitely feel that Lauren has a "young" or immature voice -- there is a lot of description about people's looks, dress, etc., but she also recognizes in the end that outward appearance was something she placed too much value on. She doesn't try to make herself out to be perfect, and she lets the reader in on the struggles she endured, including lashing out at her parents during her darker times. I read this in about a day and I enjoyed it more than I expected to. There is even a good description of the accident and how it could have happened to anyone, for those who still think Lauren was just a dumb blonde who should have missed the spinning propeller.
