Absolutely beautiful and inspiring...

This collection of 175 of the most popular hymns teaches the stories behind the songs, shares the lives of several composers, explains the history of the time in which the hymn was written, provides the reasons some words were revised/ changed, reveals the inspirations within the songs as well as suggests the impact the hymns produce. Musical scores and lyrics are also included.
A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
What an absolutely beautiful book! From the graceful cover, to the “aged” pages (color and texture), to the layout of the hymns on the left page and the explanations on the right, this book is gorgeous. Though presented as a devotional, it could also be used as a study guide, reference or given as a gift. I really appreciated the thorough knowledge with which this book was written as well as the reason…”In the very act of singing, we teach, admonish, comfort, counsel and guide”. Having read this book, my worship/ singing will be forever enhanced. Thank-you!

Celebratung our rich hymn heritage

Randy Petersen describes hymn history as being similar to archaeology. Perhaps that comparison makes Petersen a type of Indian Jones, and like Jones, Petersen delivers. Be Still My Soul captures the reader’s attention from the start with its ragged pages giving evidence this is an ancient work, filled with knowledge long forgotten. Curiosity drives the quest to turn the pages.
Petersen’s exceptional scholarship brings to life the names pasted at the bottom of 175 hymns, names obscured by the dust of time. These were real people with real lives who left behind a vast treasury of doctrinal teaching, meaningful worship, and beautiful poetry. Some of the book’s revelations are startling. Isaac Watts was a rebel who grew tired of singing the same tired songs at church and set out to bring life to the music. Louis Bourgeois was jailed for revising psalm tunes without a license. And I dare complain when I sing 7-11 songs on Sunday mornings (7 words, repeated 11 times)!
Petersen adds a personal touch to the writing with anecdotes, musings, and testimonies. Anyone who has sung these songs while occupying a pew can relate. We have much for which to be thankful.

One thing I did not find was a bibliography or source footnotes. Be Still My Soul is a valuable reference tool, and that addition would only increase its worth.

A walk down memory lane

Although I currently attend a more contemporary church, growing up we sang many of the hymns on Sunday mornings that are featured in "Be Still My Soul" by Randy Peterson. What a wonderful walk down memory lane!
This book not only features the story of 175 great hymns, but also the hymn itself including words and music. That in itself is a great treasure! In addition, there are short biographies on select hymn-writers and composers which add to the appreciation of these old songs.
I really enjoyed this book because of the familiarity of those wonderful old hymns. I don't think, though, that most who do not share that background or that currently attend a church that incorporates these songs into their service, would have the same appreciation. But, I could be wrong!
